INST ITUTE OF L INGU ISTICS (SHANAAND TOGO) AFF 11IATED TO THE INSTITUTE OF AFRI CAN STUDjES UNIVERSITY OF GHANA REPORT FOR 1969 During 1969 the West Africa Branch of the Summer Institute of Linguistics was divided into two Branches because of the grow- th of the work to five different countries In West Africa. Ghana and Togo have now become a separate Branch of the Summer Institute of Linguistics. The major effects of this* as far as this report is concerned, are as follows: 1. The establishment of Headquarters for Ghana and Togo at Tamale, 2. Previously the West African Headquarters was at Zaria, in the north of Nigeria. Zarla remains the Headquarters of the Nigeria-Cameroun Branch of S. I.L. The establishment at Tamale of a nical Studies Department for the the linguistic work In Ghana. separate Tech- furtherance of Dr. John C. Callow has been appointed head of Technical Studies for the Institute of Lingui- stics in Ghana and Togo, During this reformative stage there has inevita- bly been some diminution in the amount of lingui- stic production. The following work has, however, carried out: RESEARCH REPORTS 111. a. Field Research, _B_imoiba: Miss Gill Jacobs has continued with the analysis of Bimoba, and a detailed description of the Bitnoba syntax has been presented to the Institute of African Studies and is In process of publication. £a£aar_h In March Mr. &• Mrs. E. Hall discontinued their research work In Dagaar I. Since that time, Mr. Hall has acted as Institute Treasurer, He has, however, also been able to give a series of lectures on Oagaari Phonology and Syntax for the Department of Linguistics In the academic year 1969-70. Kjasem: Dr. & Mrs. J. Callow have been prevented from return- Ing to the Kasena area because of Dr. Callow's appointment as Head of the Technical Studies Department. Some research Into Kasena has, however, continued from Tamale. Konkomba: Miss Mary Steele has been joined by Miss Mary Abbott at Saboba. Work on the grammar of Konkomba continues with special emphasis on the analysis of tone in the mor- phological section. Kus_ah Mr. & Mrs. D. Spratt have spent most of thefr time in the Kusal area. Mr. Spratt has now been appointed Associate Director of the Ghana and Togo Branch. jisaaja: Miss Margrlt Haudenschild and Miss Gertrud Sopp have continued the work In Sisaala, Miss Sopp left the field in June to serve on the staff of the Summer Institute of Linguistics course in Germany. It seems unlikely that she will be returning to Ghana. Good progress has been made in analysis during the year, RESEARCH REPORTS 112, J^am£uj_ma: The team has been on leave for most of this period. A phonology of Tampulma prepared by the team has been published by the Institute of African Studies. j/agj_a: Miss M. Crouch and Miss B, Popham have worked on Vagla throughout the year. Miss Crouch has been appointed as a grammar consultant for the. work of the Institute in Ghana. b. Other Work Carried Out by the Institute _Sur_ve_y_s: During the latter part of the year two surveys were carried out In the north of Ghana. One was among the Frafra, Nankenne, Nabft and Taini, all in the area around Bolgatanga. The other was in north-west Ghana, in the area between Wenchi and Wa, and the following were the languages surveyed: Nome, Batigi, Dumpo, Choroba, Chakali, Hanga, Nafaara, Safaliba, Nkuraeng, Mo, Ligbi. Wo_rk___on tjngu Istjc Atlas: One of the purposes of the surveys mentioned above was to complete the information needed for the annotated linguistic atlas of Ghana, to be published by the Journal of African Languages, of which Or, J. Callow was asked to be the northern editor. The northern section of the map has now been completed and despatched.
