CHIPS & PUTTS OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE POCONO TURFGRASS ASSOCIATION www.ptga.org Founded in 1936 VOL. 22 NO. 9 Nov/Dec 2016 Scranton Country Club hosts 2016 MET Tournament PTGA Team places 6th Page 2 President's Message..... Officers Officers & & Directors Directors 2016 2016 I'm sure everyone is as excited as I am to finally put the course to bed for the year, but then the worrying begins. A few things I tried last year that worked were cutting trenches with a miltona sod stripper in the collars where the water runs off. This helped allow the water to run off the front of the green and not create any ice PRESIDENT dams in these areas. We also bought a 4 inch auger and went as Gino Marchetti, Glen Oak C.C. 570-586-5791 deep as we could to get below the frost layer on greens. Then we VICE PRESIDENT installed a 4 inch smooth drain pipe to protect the side walls. This was only in the low spot of the greens that were affected in previous harsh TREASURER Patrick Healey, Scranton Canoe Club winters. It seemed to work, but we didn't have a bad winter last year. 570-378-2249 I hope we all have a great winter and that there are no winter SECRETARY issues in the spring, but if there are, know that we are here to help you Chris Moran, Honesdale C.C. get through those issues. I hope you all have a great holiday season 570-253-9094 and as always, if anyone needs anything, let me know. I will be glad to DIRECTORS help. The number of such products has doubled over the past three or four years, and I suspect the number will increase to some extent in the future. Most con- tain two active ingredients, but some contain more–Instrata contains three, and one of the newest products introduced to turf markets (Enclave) includes four. To be sure, fungicide manufacturers have proprietary reasons for combining effective fun- gicides into a single product. However, there are some real advantages for turf managers. In combination products, more than one “target” inside pathogen cells are disrupted, thereby increasing the potency of the treatment (assuming recommended rates), and broadening the spectrum of activity (the number of diseases “controlled”). Furthermore, the single formulation is optimized to accommodate both (or all three or four) compounds in the product. Manufacturers recognize that many of our fungicide programs include tank mixes. They created such products to address the market need, and added value along the way. Continued on page 7 Page 7 Continued from page 6 The table included in this post lists 19 (there probably are more) combination products regis- tered for use against a variety of turf pathogens. The table includes product names, the active ingredients in each product, and the equivalent tank mix products. Note that I only listed one of each equivalent product in the interest of saving space.
