This time the A.W. Tillinghast course will provide a test to golfers while our originally planned host, Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort cleans up and gets growing from the second major flood in less than 6 months. Shawnee, by the way, was Mr. Tlllinghast's first design, done for the Worthing ton family on their farm at the time. Shawnee Inn and Golf resort Director of Golf and Grounds Steve Taggart, Lance Heil Golf Course Superintendent and the rest of the staff have had their hands full rebuilding bridges, washing silt from most of the golf course and preparing for a May reopening of the course. We look forward to another opportunity to return to the Delaware for a chance to play this gem as well. On a lighter note, the flooding wasn't as bad for Lance as he was leaving for his honeymoon prior to the Delaware cresting its banks. Congratulations to Lance on his wedding. Eric Reed, our host this month, can be found manicuring the golf course and doing projects of his own to improve conditions both on and off the golf course. Having seen his new mainte nance building grow from site work to its current finished state, I applaud Eric and his staff for their outstanding efforts and attention to detail. Make it a point to stop up early and get the grand tour, I am sure there will be some ideas to take back to your facility and Eric may want a couple fall and winter projects ideas from you. Eric has been at Valley since 1998. Prior to this position, he assisted in building a new golf course and housing development in Stow, Ohio. Eric graduated from the Penn State two-year program in 1990, and also earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management from the University of Akron in 1987. Eric has served the PTGA for the past four years serving in a variety of roles including his current stint as our president. Dave Tetlak has been at Valley as the Assis tant Super since 2002. Dave is a Penn State University alumni, having graduated from the four- (Continued on page 4) President’s Message ....... Officers & Directors 2005 ; We were originally scheduled to have our June meeting at Shawnee JéÉ j Inn and Resort. While Steve Taggart felt that he could still rmFmm ; accom m odate the meeting, his preference would be to host a \ PRESIDENT meeting next year under what he hopes will be more preferable Eric Reed, Valley C.C. conditions. We look forward to that opportunity Steve. Another note 570-788-4277 Barley5@ ptd.net on PTGA meetings...The July meeting at Fiddler's Elbow will not be taking place, and we are already In the process of securing another VICE PRESIDENT site. Details should be available by the June meeting. D uan e Schell, Blue Ridge Trail G. C. 570-868-8113 I also want to thank Carmen Magro and Vern Borger for gracing us djschell@ epix.net with their presence at the May meeting. It's exciting to see a renewed TREASURER vigor amongst all that has occurred recently with the Penn State John Downer, Elkvlew C.C. Turfgrass program. The future looks bright with the current group of 570-840-0078 faculty and their willingness to extend themselves towards the PTGA j_s_downer@ juno.com and other golf course superintendents throughout the state. Thanks SECRETARY again to Pete Beblavy and the staff at Blue Ridge Country Club for a Darrin Larkin, P anoram a G o lf Course very enjoyable day. Thanks to all those who attended the May I 570-222-9260 meeting. Hopefully, we are onto a nice participation streak that will DIRECTORS continue throughout the summer. And Editorial Committee lastly, thanks to this month's meeting sponsors, Atlantic Irrigation and Jeff Koch Steve Chirip of Grass Roots. M a tt Brown Mail has been slow to come in with your submissions for the news letter, with the recent dry spell you will get a pass for the month of May but in the future we could use material to bolster our newsletter. Give it a thought, recommend a topic to a board member, write an article, remember your GCSAA status requires service points and writing an article qualifies for .25 service points. Chapter meetings are worth a ,1 point, so at least get out, support our association, and have a great day with friends and colleagues.
