mp$p m OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE funded in POCONO TURFGRASS ASSOCIATION 1936 www.ptga.org VOL. 11, NO. 5 SEPTEMBER 2005 Elmhurst Country Club Ray Waddell, Golf Course Superintendent September will bring us north to Elmhurst CC for the monthly meeting. Ray Waddell, superin tendent at Elmhurst, has outlined a plan to improve conditions beginning with course condi tioning. This year, attention to detail and playability are paramount for the staff of 17 at Elm hurst Country Club. The course, built in 1929 as a 9-hole course, was later expanded to 18- holes in 1931. "Doc" Gardner generously donated the land for the club of 325 members. Go figure that the entrance is on Gardner road! Ray is a 2005 graduate of Rutgers University Professional Golf Turf Management program. He has been at Elmhurst since the spring of 2004 starting as assistant superintendent. Prior to Elm hurst, Ray's experience in golf was gathered while working at Glen Oak CC from 1998 to 2004. His current Assistant in Training is Dave Weber and his Irrigation tech is Chet Zelazny. Chet's knowledge of the Elmhurst Country Club's irrigation system has proven invaluable this year. One of the projects Ray completed this year was a base map of the golf course's final lay out. This map will serve many functions, one of which is as a diagram of the course on the new scorecard. I have been told that over the 13 years of construction, the scorecard has under gone numerous changes as the course layout has changed to facilitate the various phases of construction. Tree removal, drainage work, bunker renovation, and restoring the greens to their original size are some of the other projects currently underway at the course. President’s Message....... Dare I "hex moi" myself and say this summer is finally over, but we got Officers & Directors 2005 the first overnight temp in the fifties since probably early June. The ten day forecast features a plethora of them, so I am feeling a little more optimistic. Thanks to all who attended this year's clambake at Water Gap. Rick PRESIDENT Anglemyer and staff have done an amazing job this summer despite Eric Reed, Valley C.C. 570-788-4277 what little irrigation they have to work with. Thanks again to Lee Barley5@ptd.net Kozsey for donating our long drive and proximity prizes. North. September. These words all bring to mind the Matthew Brown, Philadelphia Turf long awaited cooler temperatures of fall. It will be nice to sleep with 215-340-5401 out the hum of the air conditioner, although by the time you read CHIPS & PUHS STAFF this, my life will be full with another small item that makes much big EDITOR ger noises, but that is an unrelated topic. The clambake was a re Eric Reed sounding success. Thanks to Rick Anglemyer and the staff of Water Barley5@ptd.net Gap Country Club for hosting us and for helping make our annual Assistant Editor fundraiser a winner. Jim Gurzler This month's meeting at Elmhurst will be held on Thursday Septem Managing Editor ber 8, 2205. Dr. Schlossberg will be our speaker this month and will Melinda Wisnosky talk on the topic of nutrients. He prefers a question and answer set Editorial Committee ting, so bring your questions on nutrients and make the day produc tive. Jeff Koch Matt Brown Thanks again to all the Tee Sign sponsors for their help in making the clambake a success. This year over $2000.00 was raised. Hopefully, your aeration and seeding will be done and everyone's schedule will allow for another large outing. I hope to see you all at I the September meeting.
