What a successful year so far -- we couldn’t be happier that we were able to get back to what we enjoy! We want to thank all the sponsors, members, players, and attendees for coming out to support NJTA this year at the Rutgers Turfgrass Research Field days in July and the Rutgers Turfgrass Research Golf Classic in August. Up next is the Green Expo in December! Planning is complete for our year ending event! Be on the lookout for more info. As my time as President of the New Jersey Turfgrass Association is coming to an end, I would like to thank everyone on the NJTA board for their efforts over the past two years. Everyone went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure we can continue our support of Rutgers Turfgrass research well into the future. With my transition to the New Jersey Turfgras Foundation President in December, I look forward to assisting in any way I can to maintain and move forward our efforts. Thanks, Rob Johnson NJTA President www.njturfgrass.org Clippings | Issue 3 • 2021 4 Im agi ne t he Best Your Executive Director Cece Peabody, MAT, CMP While COVID has not gone away completely, NJTA feels confident that the 2021 GREEN EXPO Turf and Landscape Conference will be held in person this year - December 7-9, 2021, and back at the Borgata Hotel in Atlantic City. Expo committee members have visited the hotel and seen the protocols in place to keep all attendees safe during the week. While masks are not mandatory (at this writing), if you feel comfortable wearing one, please do. Our three days of education sessions have been carefully curated and speakers from across the country, the professors from Rutgers University and other universities, will be sharing their BEST expertise. Check out pages 21, 22, and 23 for the sessions set up for Golf Courses, Lawn & Landscape, and Sports Fields. Anticipated credits are noted on those pages, but we are awaiting the final approval of credits from the various states - NJ, NY, CT, PA, MD, GCSAA. Use the registration form on page 24, or sign up online. Be prepared to visit the BEST tradeshow in the Northeast as the trade show floor has over 100 booths already registered. Visit NJTA’s website for the lastest list of exhibiting companies and the booth layout map. Some of the other BEST things are that the registration fees have not increased this year. NJTA wants to welcome all atendees back as easily as possible at the same price points. We crested over 1100 attendees in 2019, had to cancel 2020, but are hoping to break records for 2021! Many previous attendees have already registered using our online registration form linked from our website: www.njturgrass.org. We are planning the BEST, we are expecting the BEST, and we have the BEST show in the Northeast! Join us! When you can count on your turf to be at its best, others can count on you to be at yours. Field Research Turfgrass Field Days returned in late July and they were awesome. We were able to return to Hort Farm II for the annual Rutgers Research Turfgrass Field Days for one of the first in- person events of 2021. Both days were well attended with over 700 people on the research farm for the premier educational event of the summer. Rutgers Field Days was full of educational opportunities and has always been a great way to make new connections and reconnect with old friends. Tuesday, July 27, was the Golf and Fine Turf day. Wednesday, July 28, focused on Lawn, Landscape and Sports Fields. Attendees were able to view and learn about the research currently conducted by the Rutgers research teams addressing turf disease, weed management, and turf breeding. Dr. Matthew Elmore and his team shared their latest work; projects addressing weed management in naturalized fine fescue areas, and the utilization of pre-emergent herbicides to control goosegrass on Tuesday. Wednesday, his team shared their research on controlling annual bluegrass followed by a presentation on crabgrass control with conventional and alternative methods. Rutgers turf breeders lead by Drs. William Meyer, Stacy Bonos, and Phillip Vines shared the progress on many of their research projects. Attendees viewed the breeding trial for Perennial Ryegrass resistance to Gray Leaf Spot, Bentgrass programs for fairway use, and varieties bred for disease resistance at a putting green height. The breeding team shared progress of their work on improving Tall Fescue for disease resistance and stress tolerance. Additionally, the progress on the NTEP (National Turfgrass Evaluation Program) trials were reviewed from the 2017 Kentucky Bluegrass and the 2018 Tall Fescue traffic trials. Dr. Bruce Clarke and the turfgrass pathology team were busy both days sharing the research projects that they have been engaged in and their progress. On Tuesday, Fine Turf day, attendees were updated on the evaluation of fungicides in the control of Summer Patch and Pythium Blight. Later in the program, we were able to see a project looking at the control of Anthracnose and Brown Patch with fungicides and biorational products. On Wednesday, integrated summer patch control in landscape and athletic turf was presented. Dr. Albrecht Koppenhofer and his research team presented their research both days. His work on controlling Annual Bluegrass Weevil was presented on the Fine Turf Day. Then on day 2, he was able to update the attendees on White Grub control. Attendees were also able to receive the latest research on selecting proper nitrogen sources from Dr. James Murphy (the new Director of the Rutgers Center for Turfgrass Science). At the end of the program, as a bonus, Dr. Murphy provided the basic training program for the NJ Professional Fertilizer Applicator certification exam (and also administered the exam for participants). Rutgers Research Turfgrass Field Days were two full days of education and opportunity. The Rutgers Field Days Committee and New Jersey Turfgrass Association would like to thank all the sponsors below and the individuals who helped make the event such a huge success. After undergoing registration review in 2016, the EPA revised the human health risk assessment and drinking water assessment for chlorpyrifos, but issued no changes as they found the exposures would cause no harm. Interest groups petitioned to have all tolerances revoked but the EPA held this decision, pending final review due out by October 1, 2022. In April 2021, the EPA was ordered by a Federal Circuit Court to respond to the petitions and as a result, in August 2021, the EPA revoked all agricultural tolerances for chlorpyrifos. It is expected that the EPA will also review remaining non-food uses at which time addi- tional measures may be taken to limit its use. Impact to our industry in New Jersey: While much of its use is in the agricultural market Chlorpyrifos is used on golf courses. As ag uses go away, the im- pact is yet to be seen on our industry in New Jersey. Bills in the New Jersey Assembly and Senate that propose to ban chlorpyrifos had not moved while it was deemed a useful tool for NJ agriculture. If chlorpyrifos is no longer seen as an agricultural tool in the State, there could be less enthusiasm to hold up the bill(s) and they could gain support to be pushed through. What to expect: It is expected that chlorpyrifos’ future on NJ golf courses is limited. Potentially as things progress over the new few months, there could be a phased-out approach put in place for use of products containing this active ingredient. The New Jersey Green Industry Council’s goal is to raise awareness among NJ green industry professionals regarding legislative actions that could impact business. NJGIC along with other NJ Allied Associations will be closely monitoring the situation and will keep applicators in NJ updated as the situation evolves. Many different ideas were advanced, but it was decided to proceed with a golf tournament primarily because golf was a major sector of the members of the NJTA. It was also something that was quite common for most golf courses and it would be easy to promote and run. The committee acted quickly and the first Classic was held in 1996 at Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club where NJTA member Dave McGhee was the manager and one of the original Classic committee members. This fundraiser continued to grow successfully and was ready to celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2020 but COVID caused several postponements causing us to move the date into 2021. Our initial 2021 date in May had to be canceled and that left us an August date or the last week in October. Neither date was desirable but we chose August 16th because even with all of the known and unknown conflicts it gave us the best chance to try and have a “normal” Classic. The 25th anniversary would be celebrated in the 26th year, but we knew everyone would understand and we wanted to acknowledge a level of success that most fundraisers never achieve. We had the support of all of our 2019 Premier, Eagle and Birdie Sponsors and even gained a new Premier Sponsor giving us a total of 16. Sponsors are listed on the next page. These sponsors are the foundation that the Clas- sic’s success depends upon. Dr. Bruce Clarke and Dr. Bill Meyer have been responsible for acquiring and retaining these supporters and that continued in 2021. Dr. Jim Mur- phy and Dr. Stacy Bonos have been busy transitioning to their new leadership roles but they were very involved in gaining support for the Classic. Bruce has stated his desire to continue helping with the Classic even after his retire- ment, and Bill hopefully will want to continue competing against Bruce to see who is responsible for raising the most financial support. I know that Jim and Stacy, along with all of the scientists at the Center for Turfgrass Science, ap- preciate the efforts of Bill and Bruce and everyone hopes they will find the enthusiasm and the time to continue pro- moting the Classic for many years to come. This year’s Classic was different in many ways but the most dramatic difference was that it was a much smaller field than previous years. Unfortunately many of our seed companies suffered severe damage when they were forced to deal with that deadly “Heat Dome” that lasted for days. These people are resilient but they couldn’t justify sending people to play golf during such a challenging time. That easily reduced the field by over 70 people. The good news is that every one of these companies plan on return- ing in 2022 because they rec- ognize the importance of the Rutgers Turfgrass Program. In 2019 we had 402 actual golf- ers, and this year it took lots of effort to reach 291 and that number includes several turfgrass students and NJTA BODs and members who volunteered to help at registration. It would have been hard to have done it without them and you could see how much they enjoyed helping their Turfgrass Program. The smaller field still allowed us to use all three courses and even with that reduced number, we were one of the largest outings that Fiddler’s had in 2021. The speed of play on the course was much quicker than usual, there were no long waits on the course for burgers and dogs hot off the grill, and having fewer people at our Grand Reception allowed people to reach the food more easily and moving around during the reception was very smooth. It reminds us that we can often find good things even when bad things hap- pen. In spite of the positives of a smaller field, we hope to return to 2019 levels so more people can enjoy being part of the largest one day Turfgrass Fundraiser in the world. Silent Auction Chairs, Donovan Maguigan and Josh Kopera, headed up the Silent Auction and they had over 120 items avail- able to bid on. Matt Lindner, Mike Reed and Dave Schell were there to help organize the auction, the 50/50 and the Mulligans tables but none of this, including registration would have been possible without our Executive Director, Cece Peabody, and her staff. Months of planning and organizing are the reasons that this day runs so smoothly. Jim and Stacy took to the podium to express their sincere thanks to the attendees and to all of the sponsors below while Bruce thanked General Manager Tom Hurley, Chef Michael Weisshaupt, Direc- tor of Golf George Deitz, Head Golf Professional Ryan Buckley, Retail Operations Manager Caitlin Flaherty, and especially Direc- tor of Grounds & Facilities Matt Willigan and Golf Course Super- intendents Steve Saxe and Dennis Shea. They are a terrific team and are truly our partners in making the Classic special. Continued on next page www.njturfgrass.org Clippings | Issue 3 • 2021 19 Thanks to our 2021 Golf Classic Sponsors!
