Thank you being a mem- ber of the NJTA. Thank you for participation in the events that occurred in 2021 - Field Day, 1, Field Day 2, the 25th Rutgers Golf Classic and lastly, the Green Expo! Though these events were postponed due to Covid in 2020, all came back with a vengeance in 2021. You wanted to attend in person. You wanted to learn the newest chemistry, newest grass seed, the newest innovations, the newest whatever in the turf industry and lastly to socialize and meet old friends. This was done! We, as a board and working with Rutgers, could have done the best planning for all these events, but without you attending, there would have been no event. I next want to thank the NJTA Board, for without these volunteers who meet at least monthly and to those various committee members who assist when called on, none of the above would have happened without your devoted loyalty and hard work. Thank you also for allowing me to be your President for this upcoming year. I want to thank Cece Peabody, our Executive Director and her team, who work behind the scenes to make these events run smoothly but more importantly keep the board on track and informed. I lastly want to thank all the NJTA Sponsors; many of whom are advertising in this Clippings Newsletter! With their continued support, the board has grown and prospered far beyond what anyone ever dreamed possible when NJTA started over 50 years ago. With 2022 and beyond, the NJTA Board has much work to do and many challenges ahead. As announced at EXPO, Dr. Bruce Clarke is retiring. Through NJTA, the NJTA Foundation Board, and Rutgers University, an Endowment Scholarship has been set up. The goal for this Endowment is $1,000,000 to be used to attract can- didates for Dr. Clarke’s replacement and beyond. The NJTA will most likely be approached to make a financial contribution to assist in the salary of Dr. Clarke’s replacement, for possibly three (3) years, as when Dr. Matt Elmore came to Rutgers. Secondly, Dr, James Murphy is now the Director of Turfgrass Science with Dr. Stacy Bonos as Associate Director. Together, Dr. Murphy and Dr. Bonos, as directed by Rutgers University, will assess and develop a master plan for the updating and improvement of both Hort Farm II and the Adelphia Farm. Though just in infancy, these improvements will require support, both financial or hands on. Lastly, the ongoing research projects by Dr. Matt Elmore, Dr. Albrecht Koppenhoper, and Dr. Philip Vines have and will continue to be supported, financially, through both the NJTA and NJT Foundation. The goal of the NJTA Board is to support Rutgers University Turf Programs! By each of you taking part in the events of 2021, you supported that goal. As president of the NJTA, my goals are to: A. Grow the membership of NJTA. Without members, NJTA cannot survive B. Get more members involved with board activities by becoming committee members, or being a helping hand at Field Days, the Golf Classic and even EXPO. C. Continue to step up when asked by Rutgers for guidance and financial assistance. On behalf of the NJTA Board, I want to give a special thanks to Dr. Bruce Clarke for the dedication, passion, vi- sion, and success he has given to make the Turfgrass Program at Rutgers University a world class, world renown research and education entity. We can’t thank Dr. Clarke enough! In closing, please spread the word about the NJTA. If you are already a member, once again thank you. If you are not a member, join NOW. Talk to a board member about becoming a committee member; ask how you can support both the NJTA and Rutgers Turf Programs. We need your support! Let’s continue to grow and prosper in 2022! www.njturfgrass.org Clippings | Issue 1 • 2022 4 Tr i ed and True Your Executive Director Cece Peabody, MAT, CMP Tried and True Meaning: (1) Tested and proved to be worthy or good. (2) Proven by experience over time to be useful, effective, reliable. (3) Well- established and tested; known to work or succeed on extensive experience. What’s better as an accolade or testimony than to say that you or your company is tried and true? We all seek approval and it comes in many ways but to have some one say that you or your company are tried and true carries a lot of positive weight. NJTA can apply tried and true to many things: members who continue to rejoin; companies who continue to sponsor; speakers who continue to share science-based data. And most of all, Rutgers, Center for Turfgrass Science, who continues to provide the science-based education that each of you need in some form or fashion. I’m sure that each of us have many people in our circle of family and friends who fit into this mean- ing. I say celebrate them, thank them, and be there for them. These last 18+ months have been trying for all and we are looking for a truer and much brighter 2022 to meet and greet, share experiences, and live loud. I say - go for it with everything you’ve got! When the decision was made last August to proceed with Turf Expo, there were a lot of questions floating about, including: -Would people want to come, considering the pandemic? -Could we still hold a trade show, and how will we feed attendees? -Can Borgata service our crowd, considering the labor shortage that had hit Atlantic City hotels? Those questions were answered on December 7-9 when a record crowd of attendees converged at our conference, eager to receive the information from our superb lineup of speakers and to gather the license renewal credits they needed to keep their pesticide spray licenses current. But more than that there was an overwhelming desire to “get back to normal” and interact with friends and colleagues in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Of the many comments I re- ceived, the most prevalent was “isn’t it great to be back?” I answered “YES!” to all who asked that question. It was great to see the enthusiasm on the faces of long- time attendees who “really missed Expo last year;” “there was a hole in my professional life…” It was great to see the eagerness in the many first-time attendees, who were amazed to see the variety of turf professionals gathered in one spot. It was inspiring to deal with the many Borgata staff who were going above and beyond to deliver a first- class experience, despite the many labor shortfalls that have troubled all of us in the service business over the last two years. But most of all, it was wonderful to just be back with friends, sharing our stories and accomplish- ments, revealing our problems and solutions, learning in classrooms and in hallway discussions how to improve what we do for our customers. From a numbers point of view, there were some standout metrics including a record number of pre-registrants, a solid showing on the trade show floor and, in one memo- rable five minute crisis, a very real risk of running out of bottled beer on Tuesday night. Without the help of these committed sponsors, our show would not be remotely close to what you’ve come to ex- pect: BASF, Bayer, Grass Roots, Labar Golf Renova- tions, Quali-Pro, Storr Tractor Company, Syngenta, Tree-Tech/SAVATREE, Solu-Cal, David Oatis Consulting. Thank you for your support! By Chris Carson, Expo Chairman Thank you, too, to the NJTA Executive Director, Cece Peabody, who has done a remarkable job keeping our heads above water during the troubles of the last two years. She and her talented associate Angela Adamchak take great pride in producing a conference that we are all proud to be a part of, and I take this opportunity to pub- licly and enthusiastically thank them for their extraordi- nary efforts. Expo 2021 is in the books and was a great success… and now we’ve begun to plan for our 2022 edition, which will be bigger and better than ever! We are extremely excited to announce that we are planning for the silent auctions at Rutgers Field Days and our 26th Anniversary of the Rutgers Golf Classic. Our goal this year is lofty, but with the help of our members and partners, we know we can get there. If you are new to the Silent Auction or the NJTA, we host silent auctions each year at two of our major events for the association. At the auction, bids for items are written on paper, and at end of the auction, the highest listed bidder wins the item. The two silent auctions for 2022 will be held at the Rutgers Research Golf Classic on May 2, 2022, at Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club, and at Rutgers Field Days, July 26th and 27th, at Hort Farm II and Adelphia Farm, re- spectively. All proceeds go to the New Jersey Turfgrass Foundation, which directly supports Rutgers research programs. All donations would be greatly appreciated to help support this great program. It is a tremendous help to the New Jersey Turfgrass Foundation to support the Rutgers Turfgrass program at the Center for Turfgrass Sci- ence. We can’t wait to see everyone at the future events so please keep an eye out for registration. We want to ensure Mike is gratefully thanked for his contributions to NJTA and the industry. The Member of the Year for 2020 was deservingly awarded to Mike Reed, Director of Technical Sales and Education for SynaTek Solutions. Mike has been an NJTA board member for several years. During his very first year, he stepped up as Chairman of the Allied Association Committee. His interaction with the various turf industries in NJ and NY allowed him to gain the confidence of our Allied Associates and fostered more interaction with all members of the Allied Associations. COVID-19 has affected all of us and how we have had to learn and communicate. Less than 2 months ago, during a NJTA monthly board meeting, Mike suggested developing and implementing informational training webinars for not only members of the NJTA, but open to all involved in the turf industry. The board decided to run with this idea and with Mike’s leadership, NJTA initiated, rolled out, and executed the monthly webinar series, Let’s Grow Virtually, devoted towards the golf course, ProFact and landscape industry. Respective university personnel and industry lead- ers stepped to the plate and were willing to present these 1-hour seminars. The initial plan was to have these monthly seminars Dec – March. During a meeting of the newly formed Virtual Education Committee, which is also chaired by Mike, the suggestion was to try for a continuation of these session each month and not just Dec – March. The be- hind the scenes work that it takes to put this together in less than a month has been phenomenal, and all due to Mike’s dedication to not only the NJTA, but the turf industry on a whole. The work and dedication given the NJTA behind the scenes; be it Chairman of both the Allied Associations and Vir- tual Education or assisting with the Field Day Silent Auction and the Golf Classic Silent Auction, surely shows there is no more deserving individual for this award than Mike Reed. My name is Ryan Petitti and I am excited to have the opportunity to serve on the New Jersey Turfgrass Board! I’ve been in the lawncare industry for 12 years and have the privi- lege of working for Green Lawn Fertilizing, a locally owned and operated lawn and tree service company that services New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Green Lawn Fertilizing’s mission is to provide a superior experience for each of our customers. This mis- sion has been the driving force behind becoming the largest locally owned and operated lawncare company in the tristate area. As I look back to when I was a kid, it is evident that the outdoors became a place of therapy for me. Devoting time to the outdoors led me to getting my first job as a teenager at a local golf course. It was working at that golf course that set my trajectory to a career in the green industry. The great people that make this industry so special helped guide, direct, and encourage me. I will be forever grate- ful for the relationships I’ve built and am excited for all the future relationships to come. It was these relationships that encouraged me to attend Rutgers University as well as gave me the opportunities to work and grow in several roles within the industry. Early in my career, I was fortunate to have mentors and lead- ers that were willing to teach, push, and invest time in de- veloping me. This is one of the many reasons I believe it is important to give back. While at Green Lawn I have been actively involved with Green Lawn’s charity initiatives including Renewal and Re- membrance, Toys for Tots, and Chester County Futures. I am married to the love of my life, Jenny, whom I met at Rutgers. We have four amazing sons Joey (6), Nicolas (4), Gianni (2) and Luke (1). As significant as the great outdoors are to me, our sons have the same passion for the outdoors. We spend countless weekends hiking, camping, fishing, and mountain biking. I am honored to be a part of this great as- sociation and I look forward to meeting many of you. • THE PROS OF BEING A PRO • INSTANT ANSWERS Our newest branch is always open and never further than a click away. Mark’s career in turf began in western Pennsylvania, where he also began his long record of service to associations that work for our profession. Progressing through the ranks of local superintendent associations became his way of giving back to the profession he loved, and his commitment and support continued though his tenure at Oakmont Country Club. When Mark moved to New Jersey, he embraced his new home and especially the people at the Rutgers Center for Turfgrass Science. Always eager to support turf research, Mark quickly became one of Rutgers most vocal champions… despite his strong Penn State roots. He faithfully served on the board of GCSAA, eventually serving as its President, and after his national duties were completed, he directed his energy and leadership to the NJ Green Industry Council where he also served as president. Over the years, Kuhns was the host for six of golf’s major championships (including the US Open and two PGA Championships), mentored hundreds of interns and assis- tants, and always found ways to contribute to or lead turfgrass causes that he believed in. Most recently, he has become a teacher in the Rutgers Golf Turf Maintenance Program, where he passes on his experience to the latest crop of turfgrass professionals. In many ways, Mark’s career serves as a model of service to turf, and NJTA is proud to say that he is now a member of it’s Hall of Fame. Congratulations and thanks, Mark, for all you’ve done and for all you will do to help our profession! 11 Clippings | Issue 1 • 2022 continued om next page www.njturfgrass.org Recognizing Keith Bennett as NJTA’s 2021 Environmental Stewardship Award Winner Keith Bennett, Sales Manager of Grass Roots Inc. was named NJTA’s En- vironmental Stewardship Award recipient for 2021. Keith leads by example! He currently serves on the GCSANJ Foundation board as the Foundation Vice President. He also spends his time serving as the current President of the New Jersey Green Industry Council and has been involved in both orga- nizations for over 7 years. Through Keith’s leadership, NJGIC has worked closely with allied associations and members from the NJ state legislature to raise awareness of legislative actions that impact green industry busi- nesses and professionals in the state of New Jersey. Keith has been a fierce advocate for the industry on an array of important issues facing the green industry. Including being one of the industry’s loudest voices during the pandemic in ensuring that golf courses in NJ reopened and that landscape professionals were allowed to continue servicing their customers. On the legislative front, he has worked tirelessly on a number of issues including ongoing efforts to amend what is an essential ban on neonicotinoids that had gained momentum during his tenure. Through his work with the NJGIC, Keith has passionately fought to raise awareness of environmental issues impacting Golf superintendents, Lawn Care operators, Landscape Professionals, Nursery Growers/Arboricultur- ist, Sod Farmers, Sports Turf Managers and the like through education and using sound science as an advocate for Green Industry professionals. Continued from previous page Bruce Clarke, extension specialist in turfgrass pathology in the Department of Plant Biology, retired on January 1 after almost 40 years of dedicated service to Rutgers University and the turfgrass industry. Clarke (CC ’77, GSNB ’82) started his education at Rutgers in 1973 as an undergraduate in the first matriculating class of Cook Col- lege, now the School of Environmental and Biological Science (SEBS). He earned a bachelor’s degree in forest management and, after receiving his doctorate from Rutgers in plant pathology, joined the faculty as an assistant extension specialist in 1982. Clarke served in multiple leadership roles in Rutgers Cooperative Extension (RCE) and the New Jersey Agricul- tural Experiment Station (NJAES). After one year in an interim capacity, he was named director of the Center for Turfgrass Science in 1994 and served in that position until the end of 2020. Under Clarke’s leadership, the Rutgers Turfgrass Program added 11 new faculty and gained international recognition as a center of scientific and educa- tional excellence. One of the keys to his success as center director was his ability to forge productive collabora- tions. With the help of his colleagues and the turfgrass industry, he raised more than $12 million dollars to support research, teaching and outreach activities in the center, as well as more than $2 million dollars for student scholar- ships. In addition, Clarke served as the chair of the Department of Plant Pathology at Rutgers from 1999 to 2001, and later as vice chair of the department, then renamed Plant Biology, from 2001 to 2011. He then served a second stint as department chair from 2011 to 2014, where he worked with his colleagues to restructure the large and diverse group of more than 50 faculty. Clarke also served his academic profession with distinction as president of the Northeastern Division of the American Phytopathological Society from 1999 to 2000, a member of the Board of Directors of the International Turfgrass Society (ITS) from 2001 to 2009 and ITS president from 2013 to 2017. The late Ralph Geiger, a strong supporter of the Rutgers’ Turfgrass Program, generously provided funds to create an endowed chair in turfgrass science at SEBS in 2005. Clarke was the first occupant of the Ralph Geiger En- dowed Chair in Turfgrass Science until 2011. Widely recognized as a world authority in the field of turfgrass pathology, Clarke dedicated his career to provid- ing practical, science-based solutions to problems in the turfgrass industry. He authored or co-authored 90 refereed journal articles, more than 200 industry publications and garnered more than $20 million in grants and contracts to support his research and outreach programs. He also co-edited four books, including the second, third and soon-to- be-released fourth edition of the Compendium of Turfgrass Diseases, one of the most widely read publications in turfgrass pathology. Clarke’s research and extension programs focused on the identification and control of turf- grass diseases as well as the development of best management practices to reduce fungicide use. His work on the biology and control of anthracnose, summer patch, dollar spot, and gray leaf spot diseases are cited as some of the most important achievements affecting the playing conditions of golf courses and sports fields worldwide. It could be said the niche that Clarke filled in the turfgrass industry was one of “Jersey Roots, Global Reach,” hav- ing presented his research in all 50 states and more than 20 countries over the past 40 years. Moreover, his love of teaching was well-known. Clarke taught an impres- sive number of courses in turfgrass pathology and disease diagnostics at the undergraduate, graduate and continuing professional education levels. His students, who received more than 50 state and national research awards while at Rutgers, benefited greatly from his advice and have gone on to successful careers as leaders in academia, govern- ment and private industry. Covid can- celed two potential dates (May & October) in 2020 and May in 2021, but it was eventually held in August 2021. Many events having this much turmoil would spell doom to the event but that was not the case for the Rutgers Turfgrass Research Golf Classic. August is definitely not a month that we would pick but it was the only reasonable alternative. We knew that most of our dedicated support- ers would be very concerned about the normal weather stresses that come dur- ing this part of summer. In addition to that many of our superintendents were volunteering to join the maintenance support team at a major PGA golf tour- nament. Resources would be stretched and many would be forced to skip the Classic. That is what hap- pened. This event had 402 players in 2019. That number went to 291 in 2021. In spite of that loss of players the Classic was a great success. We were able to celebrate our 25th Anniver- sary even though it was one year late, and everyone enjoyed their gifts that acknowledged the anniversary. Ending up with a successful Classic was not a surprise to Drs. Clarke, Meyer, Mur- phy, Bonos, the other world class scien- tists working at The Center For Turfgrass Science, Cece Peabody and the NJTA and NJT Foundation. These are the people who make this event possible and they never stop trying to improve our indus- try and they know how important the Classic is to allowing them to keep pur- suing the answers to your questions and needs. On May 2, 2022, the 26th edition of the Classic will once again be held at Fiddler’s Elbow GC. Please mark that date down on your calendar and seriously consider joining this fundraiser. There is no other turfgrass fundraiser like this in the world. Clarke has been recognized with many significant career accolades. He was elected Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy (2004) and the Crop Science Society of America (CSSA; 2006) and received the USGA Green Section Award (2016) from the United States Golf Association, the Grau Turfgrass Science Award (2016) from the CSSA, and the Col. John Morley Distinguished Service Award from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (2014) in recognition of distinguished service to the turfgrass industry. In addition, he was recognized for his contributions to research and teaching with the Specialist of the Year Award from RCE (2020), Outstanding Professor of the Year Award from the Graduate Student Association in the Department of Plant Biology (2007) and the Hall of Fame Award from the New Jersey Turfgrass Association (1996). Continued from page 18 Clarke’s plans for retirement include more leisure time with his family and first grandchild; however he will continue his dedication to Rutgers and the turfgrass industry by continuing to serve on the graduate commit- tees of several former student advisees, fundraising for the Center for Turfgrass Science and teaching in the Rutgers Professional Golf Turf Management School’s Two-Year Certificate Program run by the Rutgers Office of Continuing Professional Education. He also is looking forward to traveling and continuing his turf consulting activities throughout the world. While Clarke’s accomplishments are a testament to his distinguished career, the high regard from his colleagues and students reflect his integrity as a teacher, researcher and professional. His collegial bonds extend to industry partners as well, whom he considers his “extended family.” Several colleagues shared their sentiments, below: “I have worked in the turfgrass industry going on 43 years. First as a university faculty member at Iowa State University and for the past 28 years as a field technical manager for Syngenta Professional Solutions. My inter- actions with Bruce Clarke began when I moved to the east coast from Iowa. I immediately found Bruce to be genuine in all that he does. Besides contracting with Bruce to conduct important studies in the development of new fungicides, I began to spend more time volunteering on committees and providing support where needed. Out of this grew a true friendship with Bruce that still flourishes to date. Bruce has proven to be the best at what he does in research and more importantly an individual respected by all. We at Syngenta are proud to pledge a donation of $100,000 towards an endowment in Bruce’s name.”—Mike Agnew, Syngenta Professional Solutions “Bruce combines the qualities of an exceptional researcher with selfless dedication to outreach and outstanding commitment. His leadership at Rutgers University has motivated a team of scientists across all disciplines that has resulted in a program that is improving turfgrass conditions around the globe.”—Kimberly Erusha, former managing director, USGA Green Section “Dr. Clarke is the most dedicated teacher and extension person I have ever known. His students are all leaders in the turf industry and Universities. It has been my honor to work with him as a colleague and friend.” Bill Meyer, former associate director Center for Turfgrass Science and direc- tor of Turfgrass Breeding “Bruce’s achievements in turfgrass pathology and the dedication and contribution to Rutgers Center for Turfgrass Science are hard to be matched. He has inspired and set examples around him that excellence is something to aim for no matter what we do. Congratulations on the wonderful career and retirement!” —Bingru Huang, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Plant Biology 20 Clippings | Issue 1 • 2022 www.njturfgrass.org Continued on page 22 Green Expo 2021 December 7-9 Borgata Hotel, Atlantic City, NJ Photos Courtesy of Shaun Barry 21 Clippings | Issue 1 • 2022 www.njturfgrass.org Bruce Clarke, Extension Specialist in Turfgrass Pathology, Retires... “Dr. Clarke has that uncanny ability to relate to and connect with whomever he meets. His communication skills are outstanding in all situations: one-on-one, small groups or large audiences. He can communicate with persons of any background, and he is just as effective listening as he is speaking. Numerous golf course superintendents, USGA agronomists and academic peers consider Dr. Clarke a friend as much as they do a colleague. They trust him and fre- quently seek his advice and counsel. He is selfless with his time and works tirelessly to serve any member of the golf course industry as well as students and colleagues.”—Jim Murphy, extension specialist in turfgrass management Continued from page 20 “I am extremely grateful to have been mentored by Bruce for both my master’s and doctorate degrees. Having the opportunity to learn and grow from a world-renowned turfgrass pathologist was an incredibly special experience that I will never forget. Not only was Bruce a great educator, but he was a supportive, encouraging advisor and a true advocate for his students. Bruce would often say that his greatest joy was seeing his students be successful and I truly believe this to be the case. I will always be thankful to Bruce for helping shape me into the scientist and researcher I am today.” —Lisa Beirn, Research & Development Scientist, Syngenta “Bruce Clarke’s career in Rutgers Cooperative Extension sets a high standard for what it means to be a success- ful extension specialist. He built a career as an internationally recognized turf grass pathologist and a strong leader within the industry. He is a deeply respected colleague within RCE and his accomplishments are surpassed only by his humility and an untiring devotion to serving the needs of the industry. He stands as a model to all within coopera- tive extension.” —Brian Schilling, director, Rutgers Cooperative Extension “Upon Bruce’s retirement, Brian Shilling asked Bruce for his recipe for success and Bruce said he did not have one— actually, that is not true. I have known Bruce since we started as freshman in September 1973. For almost 50 years Bruce has been a committed and steadfast presence at Rutgers. He is a genuinely decent person who puts service above self. He is very nurturing of his students and very supportive of his co-workers. He worked hard to understand the needs of his constituents and delivered meaningful, relevant and practical solutions to problems related to turf and ornamental disease prevention and control. In graduate school Bruce and I had a superb role model in Dr. Spencer H. Davis, one of the best teachers, mentors, and extension specialists at Rutgers. Dr. Davis set a very high bar for quality extension and teaching. Bruce exceeded the high standard Dr. Davis set many years ago. We are all better for having worked with Bruce Clarke, and I am honored to have him as a longtime friend and colleague.—Mark Robson, Distin- guished Professor of Plant Biology (Originally Published by Rutgers SEBS and NJAES Office of Communication and Marketing on January 25th, 2022) www.njturfgrass.org Clippings | Issue 1 • 2022 22 SAVE THE FIRST DATE! NJTA’s “Let’s GROW Virtually” returns in 2022. When: Thursday, February 24, 2022 Speaker: Tyler Bloom Topic: Labor Issues: How to Get and Maintain Students from the Monmouth County Career Center (MCCC) visited the Borgata Hotel & Casino. The Land- scaping class attended the 2021 Green Expo. Students were met by our host and organizer of the event, Execu- tive Director of the NJ Turfgrass Association, Cece Pea- body. She has been a longtime supporter of our program. For over a decade she has allowed our students to visit the event at no cost which allows them to attend a wide variety of Golf, Landscape & Sports Field Management seminars that directly correspond with the topics that our students are learning in class. After the students attend the seminars, they are invited to attend the trade show, which includes a buffet style lunch. After lunch the students are encouraged to mingle with the vendors and speakers, which provides the opportunity to make connections in the Turf and Landscape Management Industry. During the trip, it was made clear that the industry is desperate to identify young stu- dents that might be interested in Turf Management and that there is a wealth of resources to help educate those who may not be aware that landscaping is a huge industry with a multitude of different oppor- tunities. There was a ’buzz’ going around the show about our students and the program that we offer at the Career Center. This was an incredible opportunity and experience for the students and their instructors. The students had a really great time..attending really sparked interest from them...they had so many things to say and new questions when they returned.
