What a summer it has been! NJ has seen record setting prolonged heat waves and record setting drought. Currently, areas of NJ are now receiving record setting rains and flooding. This summer has definitely been one for the records, especially for those of us trying to grow grass and landscapes. Records have also been set with NJTA during these past few months, as well. During the most recent NJTA Board meeting, which take place the 1st Thursday of each month, it was announced that: 1. 2. 2022 Membership has reached 846, YTD, our highest since the 2019 total of 881. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO CONTINUE TO JOIN and SUPORT NJTA. PS - Help us reach 1000 members! The 2022 Golf Classic netted $151,000 for the NJTG Foundation and Rutgers. THANKS TO ALL THE PLAYERS, SPONSORS, GOLF COMMITTEE and EVERYONE ELSE INVOLVED IN MAKING THIS A SUCCESS! SPECIAL THANKS TO CHAIR SHAUN BARRY AND HIS COMMITTEE. 3. 2022 Field Days were held July 26 for Golf, and July 27 for Lawn, Landscape, Sports Fields with attendance up on both days, over previous years. Revenue generated for both days was up 11.8% over 2021 which help offset the increase in expenses, which was up 15.8% over the past year. The net profit for both days was $11,500. The Silent Auction generated an additional $6,500 in profits. A SPECIAL THANKS TO TRACY WADHAMS, CHAIR OF THE FIELD DAY COMMITTEE and THE ENTIRE TEAM FOR MAKING THE 2022 FIELD DAYS A SUCCESS. THANKS ALSO TO ALL THE PATRICIPANTS and THE RUTGERS PROFESSIONALS WHO TOOK THE TIME AND ENERGY TO PUT THESE DAYS ON! THANKS ALSO TO THE SILENT AUCTION COMMITTEE CHAIRED BY JOSH KOPERA AND DONOVAN MAGUIGAN. These are exciting times for the NJTA and you, our members. The new administration at Rutgers understands the importance of the turfgrass industry in NJ. As a result, studies are underway to evaluate the turf research facilities, in terms of buildings, space, equipment, and support. The final report will be presented to the University with an implementation plan to take place. A University team is interviewing candidates for the open position with Dr. Bruce Clarke’s retirement. There are four (4) candi- dates that have begun the interview process. Dr. Jim Murphy speaks on this process in an article further along in clippings. NJTA Communications Committee is exploring new tools to communicate remotely with members who cannot attend events in person. Remote learning is here to stay and the NJTA Board wants all members to be able to attend all events. We have offered remote training sessions for pesticide training and recertification credits via Zoom. Plans are underway for continued programs in 2022/2023. There is new technology that has come to the board’s attention that should enhance the quality of these presen- tations. More to follow on this. Green Expo 2022 is set. The dates are Dec 6 – Dec 8, 2022, at the Borgata Hotel in Atlantic City. Mark you calendars and register now for this great event. You will find additional information about Green Expo and early registration forms in this Clippings. As I wrapped up the September board meeting, I challenged all board members. That challenge was to come to the December board meeting, at which time we strategically plan for the next few years and finalize dates and events for the following year, to have a list of three (3) people to serve on their respective committees. The NJTA is a volunteer organization, apart from Cece Peabody, the Executive Director. We need your support as committee members. You don’t have to attend board meetings. Committee meeting vary in timing and length, depending upon the committee and event. The standing committees are Finance, Golf Classic, Field Days, Expo, Silent Auction, Allied Associates, Communication (Clippings, Social Media and Virtual Education) and Membership. If you already serve on one or more of these committees, I thank you. If you want to find out more about these committees and become a committee member, reach out to any board member or committee chairperson. They are listed on the last page and their info is in the Members Directory. We need your help! You can always call NJTA: (973) 812-6467 It is an honor and pleasure serving the NJTA and you, our members, during these exciting times. Never hesitate to reach out with your concerns or questions to myself or any board member. It is our duty to serve you, the members of NJTA! See you at EXPO! www.njturfgrass.org Clippings | Issue 3 • 2022 4 Ti me sl ips away.. Cece Peabody, MAT, CMP Executive Director You never know what each day may bring, change, or how it may impact your planned work. Here are a few sugges- tions to help you stay focused, productive, and engaged. You will be surprised how much more productive you will feel. 1: Get away from your desk - enjoy a few minutes of down time by getting up, taking a walk, clearing your head. You’d be amazed how your brain can refocus. 2: Keep your priorities straight - create your own system to stay organized - post its, planners, notebooks, calendars - it becomes so much easier to focus on priorities. 3: Find your team’s strength -- and delegate - take a step back and look at where your time is spent. Are you getting pulled in where someone else could be doing the work? Once you look at where you’re getting mired down, you can address the issues, so your team can take on more of the work and you can get out of the details. We had a brief reprieve from the summer heatwave just in time for this year’s Rutgers Turfgrass Research Field Days. Along with the great weather, there was plenty to see and learn. Golf and Fine Turf Day on July 26th was held at Hort Farm 2 in North Brunswick with a lot of new research and university experts. The day started off with the early bird Core session presented by Dr. George Hamilton. The field tours began with a se- ries of research trials focused on soil management. Dr. James Murphy shared his work on topdressing bentgrass putting greens and the effect of using finer sands. Attendees were able to see additional stud- ies on the effects of plant health products on Poa an- nua and the effects of promoting soil microbes under drought stress (amazingly good timing considering I haven’t seen any rain since Field Days). The day continued with attendees witnessing a series of Dollar Spot studies. The first study evaluated the effect of late-season fungicide applications during the following spring. The second study focused on optimizing Dollar Spot control utilizing fungicides, soil fertility, and biorational products. An evaluation study for the control of Brown Patch was presented with fungicides, fertility and biorational products Additionally, Dr. Matthew Elmore, was able to share his weed control work at this farm. A study was pre- sented at managing weeds and playability in fine fes- cues, and an additional study investigating the use of bluegrass weevils to control Poa annua in creeping bentgrass, under fairway conditions. A review of in- tegrated strategies for control of False-green kyllinga was also shared. The Rutgers turfgrass breeding team took part in the day sharing with the attendees some of their current work. Dr. Stacy Bonos provided an update on the 2020 NTEP fairway trial. Brad Park provided up- dates on the 2017 NTEP Kentucky Bluegrass trials, and his work on wear tolerance. There was a look at the progress of a trial evaluating bentgrass for shade tolerance and putting quality with the 2020 NTEP bentgrass test. By Craig Tolley The day ended with a training and testing program for the Professional Fertilizer Applicator Certifica- tion (ProFACT). This year, the training and the exam were administered in both English (by Dr. Murphy) and Spanish (Dr. Cabrera). Lawn, Landscape, and Sports Field Day on July 27th returned to Adelphia Research Farm in Freehold, after a hiatus due to road construction in front of the farm. This day began with Sport Field Managers Association of New Jersey’s annual trade show, a traditional summer favorite, with integration of equipment demonstrations during the field tours. Attendees were able to see an all- electric mowing in action, as well as a GPS guided line painting machine. The Rutgers breeding team held many of their studies. The first study of the day, was a perennial ryegrass trial investigating disease and stress tolerance; which was started in 2020. There were updates on the 2017 NTEP bluegrass, 2018 NTEP tall fescue, and 2020 NTEP fine fescue trials which are conducted on this farm. The turfgrass weed scientists provided updates on their work at this location. Attendees were able to learn about the newest results in Yellow nutsedge control. Included was a presentation on accurate identification of summer grassy weeds and Goosegrass. There was a separate study looking at post-emergent control of Goosegrass. Dr. Stephanie Murphy shared a study examining turf health, resiliency, and utilizing biochar as a soil amend- ment. Dr. James Murphy presented his work evaluat- ing turf response to different forms of nitrogen, timing or applications. This year, an additional hands-on Core session on calibration was offered at the end of the day. The New Jersey Turfgrass Foundation returned with their Silent Auction each day. The Rutgers professors and research teams generously made themselves avail- able each day for questions; before the tours, between stops and during lunch. The Rutgers Field Days Committee would like to thank the many sponsors and volunteers who made this event possible. We are looking forward to seeing you! Expo 2022 is Ready to Launch After months of discussion, meetings and seemingly end- less emails, our Expo 2022 program is ready to go… and all of us at NJTA look forward to welcoming you to At- lantic City’s Borgata Hotel on Tues-Thurs December 6-8. We have many special speakers and events scheduled, so please look carefully at the program so that you may plan to take full advantage of all the education, social activi- ties, and credit accumulation you need to keep your spray applicator licenses up to date. Dr. Bill Meyer has retired from his role as turfgrass breed- er and assistant chairman of the Center for Turfgrass Sci- ence at Rutgers, and for all he has done for our profes- sion and for Rutgers we have decided that this year’s conference will be dedicated to his many achievements, his support of our association’s many endeavors, and for his lifetime of service in turfgrass development. With that in mind, a very special general session is set for Tues- day afternoon, where we will take an in-depth look at the Rutgers turfgrass success story and show how many trips throughout the United States and Europe have ended up as successful turfgrass varieties that we all use daily. This amazing success story has carried with it incredible funding for the farms at Rutgers and for further research in all turfgrass disciplines, amounting in the tens of mil- lions of dollars. Dr. Meyer will make the last presenta- tion of the day at 4:00 in the Borgata Theater, and we hope that all our colleagues will be there to shower him with applause, admiration, and respect. Once we prop- erly acknowledge all that he’s done for us, we will move to the fun on the Trade Show floor where the food and drink will be plentiful, our loyal Trade Show partners will be displaying their wares and services, and your many friends -old and yet to be discovered- will be ready to share their “war stories” from the difficult season. Your favorite speakers will once again be on tap to pro- vide you with world-class education and knowledge that you can put to use immediately in your operation, and once again we will be offering a total of four 3A credits during our Tuesday and Wednesday trade show hours in the learning center to help you fulfill your obligations for that important license. 8 Clippings | Issue 3 • 2022 www.njturfgrass.org Time for You and Your Turf “Time is what we want most, but what we use worst.” William Penn This is an interesting way to start but thank you for taking the time to read this article because your time is valuable. With- out getting too philosophical in the first few sentences, Theo- phrastus back around 300 BC said, “Time is the most valuable thing a man can spend.” It’s true that the minutes that you spent reading this could have been utilized elsewhere (you can just stop, I won’t mind) but during and at this moment, I’m wordsmithing to get the gears turning in your head about YOUR TIME. Breaking the fourth wall and talking about my- self briefly, if I wrote this and no one read it, was it a waste of my time? This was a task that I felt was important, even if the only person who reads this is editing Clippings, so the time was well spent in my opinion. If I worked hard on it and no one read it, I would still feel that it was a good use of my time. Your time, my time, your staff’s time, and your family’s time is priceless, and it has no true defined value. Your time is trans- ferable, but there are no refunds or returns. The value is fluid from an hourly wage that is assigned to your time, to those unmeasured moments that you trade to finish a job or snooze a few extra winks. The extra five minutes you spent helping a neighbor move furniture was well spent, but the 15 minutes you spent mindlessly scrolling through Instagram is gone for- ever, possibly wasted if there was no intent behind why you were swiping. There is also never enough time, it’s finite and once it is spent, it’s gone. Donovan Maguigan Springdale Golf Club & Clippings Editor My musings on time started a few months ago when I removed my Apple Watch from my wrist and returned to wearing an automatic wristwatch. Long story short, the Apple Watch was a distraction during my day to day with schedule notifications, checking the weather forecast, and constant notifications. With an automatic watch, the inner workings have always fascinated me with their intricacies and precise delicate parts. This interest has grown into a hobby of building watches using assembled components like dials, hands, cases, and crowns. When assembling a watch, there is a delicate moment where the crown and stem (the wheel on the side of the watch) is in- stalled into the movement (the timekeeping portion). When the crown is wound, the spring wheel begins to move, bringing the watch to life. In that millisecond that the inner gears turn, you can see a physical manifestation of time going by. As I watched the inside of the watch generate measurable time and then tick away, I realized the time is a living thing and I was watching it breathe. ...continued on next page A GAME-CHANGING DMI THAT BRINGS TURF SAFETY INTO THE MODERN ERA Introducing Maxtima® fungicide, an advanced new turf-safe DMI that can be sprayed anywhere on your course for unrivaled broad- spectrum disease control. How much time do you have to do a project? When does the noise restric- tion lift? How long will a product last? How long until an area is established? When is your big event? How long is a staff break? Valuing your time and what you want to spend it on determines what we can realistically accom- plish without feeling overwhelmed. Coinciding with that, our financial constraints are as dictated by time and this also will determine how much you can accomplish. For instance about how long there will be down time from an equipment failure or the impact your work will have on a property both long term and short term? Understanding and managing your time is a key to your daily successes and beyond as you manage away from work. ● Be Aware of Time - Take stock of how many realistic hours you have in a day to accomplish tasks, between your time and your staff’s. How much time do you have? Could you accomplish more if you awoke earlier each day? Stayed later? Make the effort to plan things out with a solid but flex- ible schedule. ● Manage Your Time - As we all know, we never have enough time. Twenty-four hours in a day is never enough to accomplish everything you want. Working long hard days takes away from time with your friends and family. ● Don’t Waste Your Time - Don’t spend too much time dwelling on decisions or fretting over what to do next. As Ben Bradlee, longtime editor of the Washington Post said, “There really isn’t enough time in the day to convene a task force on every little decision. You’ll never go home, and you won’t be in any shape when you get home” ● Value Your Time – During long hot days of the sum- mer, we find ourselves working hard days that eat away at our time to rest and recovery. Even when we are away from work, your thoughts might be consumed by work and the next day. Know when to turn away from work and enjoy your time away from it. Share Your Time – If you have the chance to serve ● a group (Join the NJTA Board!), assist a cause, or spend your time in a way that will benefit others, do so as it will be both enriching and a worthwhile investment. Like measuring grains of a sand at a beach, the number of turfgrass plants around the world that have been impacted by Dr. Meyer’s research is incalculable. Dr. Jim Murphy, Direc- tor, Center for Turfgrass Science at Rutgers and longtime col- league of Dr. Meyer stated in 2020, “Whether people realize it or not, he has had an impact on their lives if they have done anything on grass.” In reviewing his research interests at Rutgers, Dr. Meyer stat- ed, “My breeding and research goal has been to use classical approaches to develop improved turf and forage grasses that have improved turf performance and seed production capac- ity. The main objectives are improved disease and insect re- sistance, improved heat and drought tolerance and enhanced seed production. This research includes the development of re- search methods to exhilarate the improvement process on cool season turfgrasses.” Dr. Meyer began his turfgrass career with a B.S. in Horticul- ture -Turf from the University of Illinois, where he continued his master studies in Plant Pathology, graduating in 1969. Be- fore continuing with his doctorate work at the University of Illinois, Dr. Meyer completed a graduate study at the JNAU Agriculture University in Jabalpur, India, studying the soil borne diseases in 1971. He received his Ph.D. in Plant Pathol- ogy in 1972. After receiving his doctorate, Dr. Meyer began working as a research director at Warrens Turf Nursey in Illinois before moving to Oregon working for Turf-Seed and Pure Seed Test- ing Inc. from 1975 until 1996 as a turfgrass breeder, research- er, vice-president, and president. During his tenure in Oregon, he also served as an adjunct member of the graduate faculty at Oregon State University’s Department of Crop Science. Funk served as Director of Turfgrass Breeding at Rutgers for almost 35 years before passing the reins to Meyer in 1996. Through their research in turfgrass breeding, the program has become “the largest and most productive program for releas- ing improved turfgrass cultivars for the United States and the world market for cool season turfgrasses,” releasing over four hundred cultivars of turfgrass. Building upon the turfgrass breeding success at Rutgers, Dr. Meyer successfully released the first turf-type tall fescue fol- lowing the release of Rebel tall fescue by Funk, which be- came the largest species for cool season turfgrass in the United States. Additional cultivars that Dr. Meyer has worked on in- cluded Falcon, Olympic, Mustang, Apache, and Apache III. The development of Gray Leaf Spot resistant ryegrass stands out as one of the industry changing developments from the Rutgers turfgrass breeding program under Dr. Meyer. When Gray Leaf Spot emerged in New Jersey during the early 1990’s, it was very destructive to ryegrass stands throughout the state with the capacity to destroy entire stands of turf. In 2001, the turfgrass breeding team at Rutgers, discovered a resistance in ryegrass to gray leaf spot. Through that discovery, more than half of the top varieties of perennial ryegrass today are gray leaf spot resistant. Beyond the legacy that Dr. Meyer leaves with healthy turf firm- ly planted in the soil around the world, his work with turfgrass students, graduate students, and the faculty was always held in the highest regard. Roch Gaussoin, an agronomy professor at the University of Nebraska, recalled Meyer’s dedication to students in 2020, “[The] backbone of our research program are our students and Bill has never lost sight of that. The students are what drive the machine.” Meyer recounted that, “One of the reasons I came to Rutgers was to work with the faculty and grad students of the Turfgrass Center. I am proud to say all my thirteen grad students successfully finished their studies and they are now leaders in our industry.” As the President of PureSeed Inc., Dr. Meyer’s worked closely with turfgrass breeding pioneer, Dr. C. Reed Funk, who started the turfgrass breeding program at Rutgers University. They co-developed Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass, which today re- mains top cultivar, 40 years later. In referencing this devel- opment, Dr. Meyer also recounted the numerous Kentucky bluegrass cultivars including Challenger, Columbia, Blue Note, Bedazzled, Bewitched, Volt, Martha, Blue Magic, Skye, Babe, Yellowstone, Midnight II, Syrah, Bombay, Starr, Cloud, Dauntless, Cabaret, Mazama, Bluebank, Keenland, Legend, Mercury, Rhapsody, Ridgeline, Diva, Rockstar and Lakeshore. One of many examples of the contributions from Dr. Mey- er’s graduate students is Dr. Stacy Bonos, Associate Direc- tor, Center for Turfgrass Science of Rutgers University and her research on creeping bentgrass and dollar spot. Dr. Meyer shared that, “Dr. Bonos started working with the germplasm of bentgrass at Rutgers in the late nineties and through her research she was able to identify stable sources of resistance to dollar spot disease and put them in adapted species of creeping bentgrass.” Dr. Meyer also noted that in reviewing NTEP trials for creeping bentgrass, more than 50% of the putting green and fairway tests were sourced from that material. 11 Clippings | Issue 3 • 2022 Continued on next page www.njturfgrass.org Dr. William Meyer Through his research in turfgrass breeding, Dr. Meyer has received numerous awards from the Turfgrass Breeders As- sociation, Oregon Seed Trade Association, the Golf Course Superintendent’s Association of America, National Associa- tion of Plant Breeders, and most recently in 2020, he was recognized with the United State Golf Association’s Green Section Award. This award recognizes “an individual’s dis- tinguished service to the game of golf through his or her work with turfgrass, including research, maintenance and other areas that positively impact the landscape upon which golf is played.” On the occasion, Dr. Bonos shared, “He doesn’t do his job to win awards, he does it because he loves what he does.” Thank you to Dr. Meyer for providing notes used to compile this article including his research contribu- tion and turfgrass cultivar histories. A new law pertaining to the use and sale of noenicitinoids pesticides will go into effect in New Jersey in one year. New Jersey’s legislation (S.1016) was signed by Governor Murphy on January 18, 2022 and will go into effect on October 31, 2023. The intent of this law is to reduce pollinator exposure to these pesticides, and the practical affect is to prohibit use of these pesticides in home gardens and landscapes, golf courses and other non-agricultural settings. What are Neonicotinoids? Neonicotinoid pesticides are defined as any pesticide containing a chemical belonging to the class of neonicotinoid class of chemicals, including but not limited to acetamiprid, clothianidin, dinotefuran, flonicamid, imidacloprid, nitenpyram, nithiazine, thiacloprid, thiamethoxam, or any other chemicals in this class. What does this law mean for the New Jersey Green Industry? This new law will make pesticides in the class known as neonic- otinoids “restricted use.” Restricted use means a pesticide must be purchased and used only by a certified and licensed pesticide applicator, as determined by the department pursuant to the “Pesticide Control Act of 1971,” P.L.1971, c.176 (C.13:1F-1 et seq.), or persons working under the direct supervision of a certified and licensed pesticide applicator. This restricted use designation will require any person using these pesticides to have a valid New Jersey pesticide applicator license and further prohibits any use of neonicotinoids except for agricultural use. What does Agricultural Use mean? This bill has limitation on where neonicotinoids will be allowed to be used in New Jersey. The allowable use pattern will be on “Agricultural plants” which means any plant, or part thereof, grown, maintained, or otherwise produced for commercial purposes, including any plant grown, maintained, or otherwise produced for sale or trade, for research or experimental purposes, or for use in part or their entirety in another location. “Agricultural plant” includes, but is not limited to, grains, fruits, and vegetables; wood fiber or timber products; flowering and foliage plants and trees; seedlings and transplants; and turf grass produced for sod. “Agricultural plant” does not include pasture or rangeland used for grazing. What are the exemptions: There are specific exemptions given for uses such as domestic pet care, veterinary, personal care, or in- door pest control, commercial production of preserved wood product, structural pest control within 1 ft of the building foundation, invasive pest emergencies and applications to protect agricultural seeds. What’s next? The new law requires the Department of Environmental Protection to adopt rules and regulations classifying neo- nicotinoid pesticides as restricted use pesticides. It is expected that rule making will begin before the end of the year. This will bring the opportunity to provide comments and recommendations towards allowing for certain exemptions. The New Jersey Green Industry Council (NJGIC) in conjunction with its allied associations in New Jersey will be active in the rule making process. Con- tact NJGIC via NJGIC.org if you are interested in being involved in the rule making process going forward. Take home message: Beginning October 31, 2023, no person shall sell, offer for sale, or use within the State any neonicotinoid pesticide, unless such pesticide is registered and will only be applied by a licensed pesticide applicator to an agricultural plant. The New Jersey Green Industry Council along with various industry allied associations including New Jersey Nursery & Land- scape Association, New Jersey Landscape Contractors Association, New Jersey Forestry Association, New Jersey Arborists, Chap- ter ISA, New Jersey Shade Tree Federation, Committee for the Advancement of Arboriculture and New Jersey Pest Management Association remain committed to engaging with legislators to discuss bills such as the neonicotinoid bill and its potential effects on the green industry in New Jersey. Addi- tionally, they could meet with native plant suppliers, Pinelands Nursery and Plant Detectives, and organic landscape material sup- plier, Tech Terra Environmental. An added benefit was the ability to observe McCoy Horticultural’s 1.6 kWh solar landscape main- tenance trailer. As the public demand for more sustainable practices increases, in- dustry organizations are taking action by offering educational and practical opportunities to New Jersey’s stewards of the land. To- gether, we can respond to the consumer’s interest in sustainability and support the professionals that manage New Jersey’s landscape. It was a crisp, sunny day in September when over 40 people gathered at Alstede Farms in Chester, New Jersey. They were there to learn about what it takes to run a successful landscape business using sustainable low-impact practices, including battery-powered equipment. The event, a collaboration between the NJ Green Industry Council, NALP (National Association of Landscape Pro- fessionals), AGZA (American Green Zone Alliance), NJ Nursery & Landscape Association, NJ Landscape Contrac- tors Association and Richard A. McCoy Horticultural Ser- vices, included both classroom and outdoor field, hands- on use of battery powered equipment. Attendees were provided with a series of online webinars in advance of the event and had the opportunity to become an AGZA Certi- fied Service Pro. The day started from the “ground up” with a talk on soils by Brian Oleksak of County College of Morris followed by a presentation by Richard McCoy, who offered real- life experiences on making the transition from conven- tional landscape practices to ecological and organic land care. Dan Mabe, Founder of AGZA, pulled it all together with an honest, fact-based evaluation of the transition to battery power, including satisfying aesthetic expectations, and reaching Return on Investment (ROI). Specific topics included battery electric basics, infrastructure and charg- ing, impact reduction and benefits, work productivity and considerations, economics, and case studies. The group discussed some of the difficulties faced with current proposed legislation that doesn’t consid- er unintended consequences such as battery disposal, current & future supply chain issues and the need for seasonal exemptions. Attendees were informed of the work by New Jersey’s green industry organizations, with assistance from AGZA and NALP, on seeking financial incentives and a successful model of transi- tion, driven by the industry that has always been envi- ronmentally conscious. www.njturfgrass.org Clippings | Issue 3 • 2022 21 A Quick Look: 2022 GREEN EXPO SCHEDULE Salons A, B, C, D, Event Center, Level 2 TUESDAY 6:30 AM – 6:00 PM 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM 8:55 AM – 11:30 AM December 6, 2022 Sessions • Trade Show • Social Registration Open Notepads Sponsored: ENVU Speaker Ready Room GOLF CORE EVENT CENTER: Take escalator to Level 2 from Casino Level • MUSIC BOX THEATRE: Casino Level CENTRAL CONFERENCE CENTER: Middle of Casino (Take escalator to Upper or Lower Level Rooms) LOCATION Registration Desk: Event Center, Level 2 Boardroom 2: Event Center, Level 2 Central Conference Center: Casino Level, Upper Music Box Theatre: Casino Level Dine in one of Restaurants on Casino Level: (1) B-Prime (2) American Bar & Grille (3) Angeline Studio 3: Event Center, Level 2 Boardroom 1: Event Center, Level 2 Music Box Theatre: Casino Level All Attendees LUNCH Sponsored: STORR TRACTOR COMPANY Allied Associations Lunch: Industry Reps, Allied Groups - By Invite 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM Women in Turf Lunch: Nicole Sherry, Speaker – By Invite 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM 4:00 PM – 7:30 PM TRADE SHOW– DAY 1 GENERAL SESSION – Honoring Legacy of Dr. William Meyer TRADE SHOW Grand Opening Sponsored: SYNGENTA ‘Dine Around’ Sponsored: BASF Beverages Sponsored: LABAR GOLF RENOVATIONS LEARNING CENTER – Session 1 LEARNING CENTER – Session 2 5:00 – 5:30 PM 6:00 – 6:30 PM WEDNESDAY December 7, 2022 Sessions • Trade Show • Social 6:30 AM – 4:30 PM 7:00 AM – 2:30 PM 7:00 AM – 8:30 AM 7:30 AM – 11:30 AM 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM TRADE SHOW– DAY 2 Studio 1, Event Center, Level 2 Studio 1, Event Center, Level 2 LOCATION Registration Desk: Event Center, Level 2 Boardroom 2: Event Center, Level 2 Studio 3: Event Center, Level 2 Central Conference Center: Casino Level, Lower 2 Central Conference Center: Lower Level, 3 & 4 Central Conference Center: Casino Level, Upper Music Box Theatre: Casino Level Studio 4: Event Center, Level 2 Salons A, B, C & D: Event Center, Level 2 Registration Desk Open Speaker Ready Room Rutgers Turfgrass Advisory Board Breakfast - By Invite SPORTS FIELDS ALLIED SESSIONS: IANJ (Irrigation Assn of NJ} - Separate Fees to attend LAWN & LANDSCAPE GOLF ALLIED SESSION: NJLCA (NJ Landscape Contractors Assn) TRADE SHOW 11:30 – 1:30 Lunch Sponsored: SAVATREE/TREE-TECH Beverages Sponsored: LABAR GOLF RENOVATIONS Shop, Bid, Win at the NJ Green Industry Council’s SILENT AUCTION LEARNING CENTER – Session 1 LEARNING CENTER – Session 2 ALLIED SESSION: NJNLA (NJ Nursery & Landscape Assn) GOLF Sponsored: AQUATROLS and BASF LAWN & LANDSCAPE SPORTS FIELDS MIX N MINGLE Reception Sponsored: GRASS ROOTS Speakers’ Dinner - By Invite ALLIED EVENT: IANJ Cocktail Reception & Awards Dinner (Separate Fees) Central Conference Center: A, B, C, D “SUPERS” Social Sponsored: GOLF COURSE SUPERS ASSN OF NJ December 8, 2022 Sessions • ProFACT Training/Exam Registration Desk Open BUCKLEY’S BOOT CAMP: Lawn & Landscape RUTGERS SESSIONS: Golf Sports Field Managers Assn of NJ: BOD Strategic Meeting Lunch on your own CORE ProFACT Fertilizer Certification TRAINING – Spanish & English ProFACT Fertilizer Certification EXAM ($90 fee) – Spanish & English 2022 GREEN EXPO Concludes Thanks for Attending! These hard-working individuals are breaking down barriers and make a name for themselves in this highly-competitive industry. Rutgers Professional Golf Turf Management School is proud to recognize a few of these powerful and successful women. DR. KAREN PLUMLEY’S New Appointment as Office of Continuing Professional Education Director On September 1, 2022, Dr. Karen Plumley began her role as the Director of Rutgers Of- fice of Continuing Professional Education in New Brunswick, NJ. Dr. Plumley has an extensive educational and professional background in the turf industry, and this is ex- pected to be reflected in her leadership of the Rutgers Professional Golf Turf Management School. Although Plumley admits, that a career in turf was not her initial goal, she is still passionate about her career choice. “I didn’t grow up playing golf, so I found turf almost by accident. As I look back over a long, fulfilling career, I can’t imagine a better way to have earned a living. Spending my days on golf courses. Talking with superintendents about their challenges. Helping them solve them. Educating the next generation of superintendents. It’s been a won- derful experience,” said Dr. Plumley. Rutgers’ Golf Turf Program Alumna JENNIFER TORRES Named Candidate for the GCSAA Board of Directors On September 2, 2022, GCSAA announced their 2023 Board of Directors candidates. Among the candidates is Jennifer Torres, a Rutgers Golf Turf alumna and Superintendents at Westlake Golf and Country Club in Jackson, New Jersey. Torres is one of five candidates vying for three open director positions. The election will be held at the Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL on February 9, 2023. Torres’s running platform focuses on bringing awareness to the turf industry as a career. “My platform for running for the board is my passion to bring others into the industry and try to help in the labor issue so many are facing,” Torres said. “I believe we need to be seen and heard more. We need to promote this industry in our local schools and show students the value the turf industry has as a career. If I had not known someone in the business, my story would be very different. All GCSAA members should contact their chapter delegate if they would like to support Torres’s bid for the position. “It is going to be a tough fight,” Torres said. “I am proud to represent NJ and Rutgers as the first female ever to run, and hopefully, win.” NOTE: If you or someone else would like to apply to the Rutgers Professional Golf Turf Management School, Two-Year Certificate Program, contact Laura Boyd for information: Laura Boyd, laura.boyd@rutgers.edu (848) 932-7184 www.njturfgrass.org Clippings | Issue 3 • 2022 24 Better varieties for all your turf needs. Presented to a person, persons, or organization that has rendered distinguished service in projects which have as a major objective, the protection of our environment and the preservation of the eco-system of our state, our nation, and our planet. Dirk originally came to work as a technician at Rutgers on a grant under Dr. Robert Duell to analyze landfill closure techniques in April of 1988. A couple years later, upon the completion of that grant, Dirk transferred over to the Turfgrass Breeding program under the direction of Dr. C. Reed Funk, worked throughout Dr. William Meyer’s tenure and continue to the present. Over the more than 33 years in the breeding program, Dirk has had the privilege of helping develop many new cultivars of turf that have made impacts in qual- ity and disease resistance. Though, while it seems that much of his time may have been spent digging a lot of holes, moving a lot of plants, sowing a lot of seeds, and looking at a lot of grass it’s not without a sense of gratitude. Dirk is grateful to have gotten his- start in breeding under the legendary Dr. Funk, and the chance to work for so many years with Ron Bara and Dr. Meyer, playing his small part of helping ad- vance the program. “More than any sense of achievement, though, I would say I have much greater appreciation for the many professors, students, other technicians and in- dustry people I have been able to work with, help train or mentor and consider friends.” Bob Windish founded Fairway Green in 1987 and has been a driving force in New Jersey lawn care ever since. He supports the NJTA, NJGIC, Rutgers Turf- grass and other green industry programs. Bob’s concerns for the environment are evident in the programs he offers and the training he provides his em- ployees. Bob has always strived to have his employees go be- yond the minimum requirements when it comes to li- censing and training. Rather than having employees Profact Trained and work with a Pesticide Operator’s License, they are given supplemental training to en- sure they become Profact Certified and also get their own Pesticide Applicator’s License. Senior employees are given the opportunity to become NALP Certified Turfgrass Professionals in Cool Season Lawns. Bob has created a wonderful place to work and the Windish family truly care about their employees. This can easily be seen by the fact he has over a half dozen employees of 20+ years. www.njturfgrass.org Clippings | Issue 3 • 2022 27 njsae 25 US Highway 46 West • Wayne NJ 07470 Phone: 973.812.6467 •• Fax: 973.812.6529 New Jersey Turfgrass Association MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION Membership shall be open to all interested in the development and maintenance of turf.
