Did you experience one? De- pending upon where you were, we dealt with excessive heat and drought early, followed by maybe excessive downpours or just a few drops. Heat came and went and came again. Diseases were pre(cid:425)y much non-existent until the end of July and then everything came out. It was once again, a year of weather for the record books. The summer of 2023 remained active for the NJTA. At our last board meeting, some numbers were presented that I want to share with everyone. The 2023 Golf Classic ne(cid:425)ed $149,000 for the NJTA 1. Foundation and Rutgers. Though only slightly lo wer than 2022, given increases in expenses, this is fantastic. The challenge for everyone is to bring a new person to join the NJTA. For the past ten (10) years, the NJTA membership has been hover- ing right around or above the 800 (cid:884) 850 mark. As summer comes to an end it is time to reflect on another great season and successful summer Fields Days. This event was made possible with the support of the many Field Days sponsors, dedi- cated Rutgers staff and volunteers of the New Jersey Turfgrass Association in conjunction with the Rutgers farms staff. This year for the first time, it was not the hottest day of the year. We had two wonderful days at the end of July for the annual Rutgers Turfgrass Research Field Days with near record attendance. There were almost 800 participants this year, the highest since 2019. Golf and Fine Turf day returned to the Rutgers turf Hort Farm II in North Brunswick. Those who attended were able to start the day with the traditional early bird core session, presented by Mr. Mike Reed. Always an entertaining and informative presenter to start the day! The field tours commenced with updates on the breeding trials. The attendees were able to visit the 2018 NTEP Tall Fescue trial and see the updates on the 2020 NTEP Creeping Bentgrass fairway trial. Additionally, they visited the 2020 NTEP Bentgrass putting green trials where the varieties were screened for improved shade tolerance. The weed science team, led by Dr. Matt Elmore, made several contributions to the field tours. One of the first stops was a study looking at integrated control of False Green Kyllinga. u rf gra ss F D AY - t gers T t R em em b er! Craig Tolley Field Days There was also a study evaluating how different eco- types of Goosegrass are affected by varying management strategies and plant growth regulators. Later in the tour a study was presented using chemical and non-chemical methods for the control of crabgrass. The attendees were able to meet the new Rutgers turf- grass pathologist Dr. Ming-Yi Chou. Dr. Chou had the opportunity to present some of his work on control of Brown Patch and Take-all Patch by utilizing fungicides, fertility and biorational products. Later in the day Dr Chou’s team also shared their work on control of An- thracnose and Dollar Spot. The attendees of this day benefited from presentations and research updates from Dr. James Murphy and Dr. Al- brecht Koppenhofer. Dr. Koppenhofer presented on An- nual Bluegrass weevil control and Dr. Murphy presented on the effects of fine topdressing sand and persistence of Creeping Bentgrass putting greens. However, the suc- cess of a lawn renovation project is directly influenced by the homeowner, which is why effective com- munication with your client is key. Justin Shield Down to Earth Landscaping Here are THREE things to communicate to your clients before going out this fall. Mark outs– sprinkler heads are a given, but what about 1) invisible dog fences? Communicating to your client on sched- ule, and what to mark out will save you time, headaches and service calls. 2) After care - You came out, aerated properly and over- seeded with a high-quality seed variety, but what now? Make sure you provide clear concise instructions on watering, mow- ing, and usage and how to adjust after germination and estab- lishment. Manage their expectations - Educate your clients on what to expect in the 4-6 week period after 3) seeding. Communicate to them ahead of time on when to expect germination based off variety, climate, and site conditions (shade, non-irrigated). On this date, a state law in New Jersey is going into e(cid:299)ect that prohibits the use of neonicotinoid insecticides. (cid:60)eith Benne(cid:425) of the NJGIC summari(cid:460)ed the bill in Turf Maga(cid:460)ine(cid:854) (cid:862)The NJ bill targeted the use of neonicotinoids (neonics) in the state, including acetamiprid, clothianidin, dinotefuran, (cid:327)onica- mid, imidacloprid, nitenpyram, nithia(cid:460)ine, thiacloprid, and thiamethoxam. The bill directs the class of neonics to be classi(cid:302)ed as restricted use in the state, re(cid:395)uiring applicators to be certi(cid:302)ed and licensed by the NJ Department of Environmental Protec- tion (NJDEP) in order to access and apply the products. The bill went one step further, however, in greatly restricting the areas in which neonics would be allowed. While agriculture uses were touted as a safe and responsible way to apply neonics, other outdoor applications were not and applications to turf and ornamental plants were prohibited.(cid:863) In short, starting after October 31st, turf managers will not be allowed to apply neonicotinoid products to turfgrass or orna- mental plants despite being an important part of integrated pest management of white grubs, caterpillars, and lantern(cid:327)ies. The ban, which was driven by concerns over the impacts on pollinators, moved (cid:395)uickly through the New Jersey legislature, mirror- ing a similar law enacted in New (cid:122)ork. According to Purdue University, (cid:862)turf and ornamental systems comprise only about 4(cid:1081) of neonicotinoid usage in the U.S., but they are still the most widely used insecticides in turfgrass systems(cid:863). In the table below from Purdue University, you can see speci(cid:302)c active ingredients, commercial names, and target pests for several examples of neonicotinoids. For speci(cid:302)c control of white grubs, active ingredients in other insecticide families include chlorantraniliprole, tetraniliprole, trichloron, and carbaryl are viable options. Before applying these products, verify the proper use rates and timing of applications as some products work best as preventive applications and others as curative applications. In the table below from Purdue University, alternatives to the neonicotinoids are listed with active ingredi- ents, commercial names, and target pests. Neonicotinoid Insecticides Source: Douglas Richman, Purdue University - Protecting Pollinators from Insecticide Applications in Turfgrass (2017) Active Ingredient Trade Name / Company Insecticide Class Target Pests Clothiandin Dinotefuran Imidacloprid Chlorpyrifos Arena / Nufarm Neonicotinoid White Grubs / Billbugs / Caterpillars / Chinch Bugs / Crane Flies Zylam / PBI-Gordon Neonicotinoid Billbugs / Caterpillars / Chinch Bugs / Crane Flies Merit / Envu Thaimethoxam Neonicotinoid White Grubs / Billbugs Neonicotinoid White Grubs / Billbugs / Caterpillars / Chinch Bugs / Crane Flies While the law is speci(cid:302)c on the speci(cid:302)c neonic family of pesticides, many of the rules that are re(cid:395)uired for the law are still in development including the fate of any existing neonic products that applicators may have in stock in their storage room. Marney Stau(cid:299)er, of the New Jersey Green Industry Council stated that, (cid:862)Understanding what can be done legally with the product still in possession in NJ after Oct. 31st is critical. Unfortunately, the tough thing is (cid:884) there haven(cid:859)t been any rules put in place for the bill. Product that applicators will have on their shelves as of November 1, 2023 may be banned or there may be an exemption passed that will allow continued use into the next year- the problem is(cid:886)we don(cid:859)t know and we don(cid:859)t have any clear insights into what will be decided at this point in time.(cid:863) The New Jersey Green Industry Council has pro- posed exemptions to allow applicators to apply these products after the ban date, however there is currently no provisions in the law to allow applications after October 31st. Guidelines on the disposal of leftover stock are also currently absent from the rules. Later in the month of September, the NJGIC will be meeting with the NJDEP to discuss the neonic bill. If your company does happen to (cid:302)nd that you have stock of these products and you wish to use them before the ban, Dr. Albrecht (cid:60)oppenho(cid:296)er from Rutgers University o(cid:299)ered two potential applications, but stressed caution. For white grubs, clothianidin may be applied if done soon(cid:854) however refrain from making a repeat application if you have done so already this season. If crane (cid:327)ies are a concern, which is limited in New Jersey, an application of a neonic may be warranted. For ornamental applications, imidacloprid could be applied, (cid:862)understanding that fall applications can be bene(cid:302)cial to many trees and ornamental plants.(cid:863) Future updates on the rules of the upcoming ban as well as possible exemptions may be forthcoming after conversations between the NJGIC, allied associations, and NJDEP. www.njturfgrass.org Clippings | Issue 3 • 2023 20 T I BI C P AN As of 10/3/23 R ly t do lo gel - N a ny o rs - N a dio a riu s S t ro AC Aq Aq ls - S A(cid:395)uaTurf Irrigation - N Arb o rj et Ariens C Asp en O - S BAS Bla L Bra ndt Bri(cid:425)on Industries Carbtrol Corporation Central Turf & Irrigation lliers E ngineering & o d F o nd M gm o n P b s S a go a rm Agrisc ienc es o rt ev s D esign Deer Solution u rf le ‘ ’ T J ersey t N ew o rk s a st S D ry a rt a st C o d & J ec S eed W t er - S a st e2 Ewing Irrigation Executive Turf Products .
