We wish Mark the best of luck on leading our association through this tough economy and other industry challenges. After the conclusion of our Annual Meeting, we played a nine-hole scramble tournament. Ed Goodhouse did a wonderful job grooming the leftover snow and golf course, making for a great day. It turns out that the Northwest Corner in November is the perfect location to gather with colleagues, play some golf, and end the season with a snowball fight. -- Marc Weston In August 2011, Hurricane Irene hammered Connecticut’s coastline. The destruction of some of our coastline courses will be talked about for decades to come. Then at Halloween, a freak winter storm hit Connecticut, which was neither a trick nor a treat – it was just cruel. Who knew that the Northwest Corner would be the best place to host our Annual Membership Meeting? On Monday, November 7, it was 64 degrees and a perfect day for our Annual Meeting and nine holes of golf at Torrington Country Club. Our Annual Meeting began in the morning with the reading of our annual reports. Then Mark Mansur December 2011 Connecticut Clippings Page 2 December 2011 Connecticut Clippings Page 3 So as I talked with my friend about different ideas, she looked at me and said, “You know, there are a few members who don’t know who you are?” Interesting, here I am a member of the CAGCS since 2002 and a board member since 2003, and there are some members who wouldn’t know me in a lineup, let alone in a grocery store. So then I asked myself, is that a public relations issue that I created or are these members not coming to events or a combination of the two? So that’s it! I have elevated all this way up to President of CAGCS and some members don’t know who I am. So since I have this great opportunity to introduce myself and tell you my story, I will give you the highlighted version and spare you the boring details. I graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1990 with a degree in plant biology/horticulture. I moved to Cape Cod and introduced myself to Tom Colombo at New Seabury Country Club. He gave me an opportunity to work on his maintenance crew (He is one of the reasons “why…”). I then was fortunate enough to land the Assistant Superintendent position at Dennis Pines Golf Course under Dennis Penner (Another reason, So a good friend asked me recently “What’s your story? How did you get started in the golf course profession?” It’s one of those questions that we can all easily answer in conversation with a friend or in an interview, but have you truly asked yourself “why, did I get into this profession?” Another friend asked me what I was going to write about in my first presidential message. My reply was blank. I suppose I could write about the historic impact of all the weather extremes we experienced in 2011, but who wants to relive that. I could write about how the economy is adversely affecting the golf industry, but again, too depressing. “why…”). As I contemplated my next move, I introduced myself to another Superintendent, Jim Conant, and asked him where I should go to get the most exposure in this business. His advice landed me in Westchester County under Dennis Flynn at Brae Burn Country Club (yep… he is a “why…” too). All of these experiences helped me become the Superintendent of Richter Park for four years and my present employer, Wintonbury Hills Golf Course for the last 6 years. After 21 years in this business, I can honestly say “why” I am a Superintendent. Yes, we all love working outdoors and playing on all of these terrific golf courses across the country and around the world. However, it’s the effort that I put into meeting all of these mentors and benefitting from the sound advice and direction that each one took the time to give me. Now I also understand “why” some members of the CAGCS don’t know who I am. It’s because I forgot my beginnings and forgot to introduce myself. “Hi, I’m Mark Mansur from Wintonbury Hills Golf Course and President of the CAGCS, what can I do to help you?” Connecticut Clippings is an official publication of the Connecticut Association of Golf Course Superintendents Newsletter Editor Stephen Smith, CGCS Co-Editor Heather Garvin Newsletter Committee David Basconi, Paul Bednarczyk, Bob Chalifour, CGCS (ret.) Wednesday, Feb. 8th is our peak day and attendees will be greeted by morning refreshments sponsored by Floratine full of education and NEW ENGLAND REGIONAL TURFGRASS CONFERENCE AND SHOW FEBRUARY 6-9TH, 2012 15TH ANNIVERSARY! As widespread frost begins to blanket our region, finishing late season projects and winter preparations are the common directions given at most facilities. We think of winter as a time to catch up, plan for the future, recharge depleted energy sources (vacations), family time and hopefully trade show considerations among others. The New England Regional Turfgrass Conference and Show had a challenge when it was first scheduled for March 5-8. GCSAA changed their early February dates to very late February and early March (2/29 & 3/1) to be able to go to the city of Las Vegas. We have always thought it important to be at least 2 weeks clear of GCSAA. So, in 2012 it was decided to try something different and go into the middle of winter and take the normal GCSAA (first week of February) dates. This is quite a change from our original plan to always keep it in early March where it seems to fit best and everyone is used to it being. We hope that you recognized this significant change to your calendar and are preparing to be in Providence for this year 4 weeks ahead of schedule! Our show dates are February 6-9th and approaching rapidly!! Here is some information I hope will help you get excited about our show in February. activities including 7 hours of trade show, 4 hours of education in 4 different tracts followed by our 8th Live Auction and then a reception in the Westin Hotel Grand Ballroom sponsored by Harrell’s and Syngenta! Thursday, Feb. 9th is our final day and is your opportunity to catch your breath, see an exhibitor for some quality time, get your 9 stamps for ‘Tour the Show Floor’ for prizes sponsored by Agrium Advanced Technologies, grab some new education and credits and then be on the road early enough to catch up as the kids get home for supper. A new addition to the program is a 2 hour Professional Development Session. This is a great chance to hone some new skills that could help individuals pursuing new positions or taking on new responsibilities. If you are an assistant this is where you’ll want to be! continuted on page 4... For those who are making the trip to Las Vegas for the first time like me, here are a few tips and must sees while there. Attire is smart casual. Jeans/slacks and a button down shirt with a Jacket is proper attire for most clubs. The average temperature when we will be there is 68 degrees during the day and 28 degrees at night. Taxis are the way to get around and they are not allowed to stop on the strip. There are taxi stands at hotels that move very quickly even if there is a line. Things to see: The Hoover Dam is a marvel and there are many different ways to see it. There are helicopter and bus tours or you can rent a car and go on your own. Some of the helicopter tours can include the Grand Canyon also. Fremont Street and the experience of “Old Vegas”. You will find the lowest table limits in Las Vegas here for those who aren’t big gamblers. It has a light show above the street every half hour or hour. Sky Bars – these are high above the skyline and give you a great view of Las Vegas and the Strip. There are three of note: the Mix at the Hotel at Mandalay Bay is a great place to sit and have a drink, the Ghost Bar at the Palms has a glass floor and is a little more lively, and the Voodoo Lounge at the Rio. Minus 5 bars can be found at Mandalay Bay and the Monte Carlo and are exactly what it sounds like from the name. The Roller Coaster on top of New York-New York is a great way to see the skyline and one of the many rides at the Stratosphere with names like X Scream, Insanity-the Ride, Big Shot, etc. will get your heart going (or stopping) at the same time. The article was titled, “The Dart: Women Call the Shots at Sterling Farms Golf Course.” This article was not written by any of our members; it was a re-print of an article published in June in the Stamford Advocate newspaper. The article was about two women working in what is traditionally a maleoriented field. In the article there is a statement, attributed to me, that implies that the few women who graduated from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture ahead of me ended up waiting tables. That statement is not a quote and does not at all reflect what I said during the very brief interview I had with the reporter from the Stamford Advocate. I was not offered the opportunity to proofread or approve the article before it was published. If I had been able to do so, I would certainly have insisted that the statement be deleted. During the interview I recounted a conversation with a teacher which involved several comments made in jest. I don’t think the reporter realized that including and embellishing such a statement would be interpreted as an insult to the graduates and teachers of the Stockbridge School. Instead, I think it was a clumsy and insensitive attempt to illustrate the fact that not many women work in this field. Even though the statement does not accurately CAGCS NOVEMBER GOLF RESULTS ANNUAL MEETING TORRINGTON COUNTRY CLUB, NOVEMBER 7, 2011 9-Hole Scramble ABCD 1st Gross – 30 Eric Morrison, Shennecossett CC Eric Kundahl, Norwich GC Bob Chalifour, CGCS, Slater Farms Charles Babcock, Tunxis Plantation Heather Garvin, Hart Seed Co. 2nd Gross – 33 David Conrad, Metro Turf Specialists Closest to the Pin, Hole #3 Marc Weston, Indian Hill CC Closest to the Pin, Hole #6 Melissa Gugliotti, Syngenta Closest to the Pin, Hole #6 Paul Bonini, CGCS, Watertown GC Longest Putt, Hole #1 Stephen Smith, CGCS, Rock Ridge CC Longest Putt, Hole #7 Shawn Donovan, Turf Products Longest Drive Peter Gorman, Pine Orchard Yacht & CC Stephen Smith, CGCS, Rock Ridge CC Mike Donahue, Phoenix Environmental Care Andrew Fries, CGCS, H. The additional requirements of one year as a Class A member and 5.0 education points have been removed. GCSAA offers a professional certification program that enables golf course superintendents to be recognized for their superior levels of achievement in golf course management. The professional designation, Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS), is bestowed upon those who voluntarily meet the stringent requirements. The CGCS designation is the most widely recognized in the golf industry and the highest level of recognition that can be achieved. Approximately 25% of GCSAA Class A members are certified golf course superintendents. Learn more about the requirements and access webcasts, study guides, work samples, templates and other resources to help you through the process. http://www.gcsaa.org/Education/ Certification/Achieving-certification.aspx Find resources to promote your certified status and information on maintaining certification. http://www.gcsaa.org/Education/ Certification/Resources-for-certifiedmembers. aspx From left to right: Kevin Immohr, Doug Zitnay, Jamie Trembicki, Rob Capecelatro, Tim Nadeau, Matt Golino, Alex Simpson, Phill Matts, Ryan Andrew, Chris Small, Mike Lorch, Kyle Rogers, Mike Pieri, Ed Clark, Kevin Fuchs, Ed Quinones, Corey Wielizcka. In the near future the DEEP will be classifying the states streams. You will be asked to register and monitor your diversion. Please become aware of the stream flow regulation and educate your club on your responsibilities. PERMITTED WATER USERS Please reread your permit and take it as law. There are no changes that affect your permit. The 2011 Stream Flow Standards regulation was really aimed at the Registered users. Most of you have discovered that each new permit was more restrictive than the proceeding permit. Our hope is that now we are active and aware, further restrictions on permits in the future will be more user friendly. MUNICIPAL WATER USERS Call your water company and ask. There shouldn’t be any affect. Please educate yourself on your clubs position. If you have questions please ask, Hacienda Golf Club, La Habra Heights, CA, Darren J. Davis, Olde Florida Golf Club, Naples, FL, Mark F. Jordan, CGCS, Westfield Group Country Club, Westfield Center, OH and Bill H. Maynard, CGCS, Milburn Golf and Country Club, Shawnee Mission, KS. Other topics during the meeting included the updating of the Affiliation Agreement & Strategic Planning Requirement, GCSAA Programs, Projects and Service update, Strategic Review of Member Standards, and presentations of Chapters Innovative ideas. The seminar will be led by A BRIEF RECAP OF HOW THE STREAM FLOW REGULATION OF 2011 WILL AFFECT YOU Happy new year. Thank you for the recognition and the affirmation. This is important work and it needs to be a priority. Thank you all for answering the call to action, WE were successful. Here is a brief recap of how the stream flow regulation of 2011 will affect you. REGISTERED GOLF COURSES Business as usual as far as usage is concerned. You are exempt from the requirements in the regulation if you certify on a form provided by DEEP that your golf course is in compliance with DEEP’s “Best Management Practices for Golf Course Water Use” (see link below for manual) and you provide on the form the name of the dam, the permit or registration number, the geographical location of the dam, the affected stream or river, and the GCSAA ANNUAL CHAPTER DELEGATE MEETING The GCSAA Chapter Delegates meeting was held on October 28-30, 2011 in Kansas City, MO. The event was well organized and well attended. The key discussion of the meeting focused on the Field Staff program and summarized current status and future expansion. Of particular relevance to the CAGCS is the expected hiring of a Northeast representative by the end of the year. In addition to the liaison position between the local and national associations, this person will attend various meetings, and can help with public relations. Candidates for GCSAA Board positions also had a chance to address the delegation. The President’s and Vice President’s position are being run unopposed with the candidates being Sandy G. Queen, CGCS, City of Overland Park, KS and Patrick R. Finlen, CGCS, The Olympic Club, San Francisco, CA respectfully. Current GCSAA Board members Keith A. Ihms, CGCS, Country Club of Little Rock, AR and John J. O’Keefe, CGCS, Preakness Hills Country Club, Wayne, NJ are running for the office of Secretary/Treasurer. There are two Director Positions available. They are being sought by Rafael Barajas, CGCS, if I cannot answer it, I will get the answer. Thanks again for your help, support and recognition.
