This put things in perspective as our hearts go out to all the injured. An attack like this changes so many lives, and we are all just very grateful that the bombing didn’t involve more victims. In 2012, our first year, we were able to sign up 56 courses to participate donating 57 rounds of golf. A year later, 95 courses had donated 99 rounds of golf and they went on the week-long auction block as noted on April 15th. As expected, bidding went slow for the first 5 days, but as the weekend approached activity started to pick up. The events in Boston seem to understandably dominate people’s attention and created obstacles. Sports Radio WEEI in Boston was going to facilitate ads over the weekend for Tee-Up New England. Unfortunately the studios were on lockdown due to the bombings and the ads could not be produced. Despite the distraction, golfers from all over New England were involved in the bidding. By 6pm on the 22nd, all rounds had been bid on and some of the higher priced donations went for more than $600 a foursome. For golfers, Tee-Up New England it is a great way to get a shot at playing some of the supreme golf courses in New England and usually for a substantial discount. With these proceeds all going toward turfgrass research, we are proud to say that the end user (the golfer) is paying directly for some of today’s much needed turfgrass research. The online auction netted more than $16,000 for turf research. This potentially would allow the foundation to possibly add another research project each year. In 2013, the foundation is funding 12 projects in total at UMass, UConn and URI, with research expenses reaching $153,000. A thank you goes out to all 95 participating facilities and for supporting organizations helping with the 2013 Tee-Up New England event. It is a great start to a program that involves the entire golf community. The idea is that all golf facilities should be able to donate a round of golf as an investment in the future of the game, and in return we hope the research will benefit that course down the road. State golf associations have been a huge help in getting the word out to the golfers over the winter and leading up to the online auction. The golfer is the customer, the end user, the buyer and the beneficiary of good turf conditions. This is a new approach with funding coming directly from the golfer. We hope your course can participate in Tee-Up New England 2014! Gary Sykes, Executive Director, New England Regional Turfgrass Foundation, Inc. In less than 18 hours after Adam Scott dunned the Green Jacket in his first major tournament victory, Tee-Up New England opened its 2nd annual online auction on April 15th at 12 noon. The “Masters” ignites the golfer’s passion to get out and play especially after a long winter. When deciding on the best week to hold a round of golf auction, it seemed by far that the Monday after the Masters would be the logical if not perfect week for it. But, if you were like many others, especially those here in New England, you were probably glued to a news screen somewhere watching the tragedy unfolding at the Boston Marathon on that Monday. To make matters worse the bombing became a full weeklong saga as police closed in on the suspected bombers. The “perfect week” for a golf auction ended up with the most incredibly prolonged distraction for December 2013 Connecticut Clippings Page 2 On the work side of my life I have had the honor and privilege to serve the CAGCS under the leadership of Wayne Urban, Keith Angilly, Chris Mauro, John Garcia, and Mark Mansur. I cannot even begin to express the gratitude and respect I have for each of those who held the president’s position before me and for what each of them has done for this association. As incoming president, I could not ask for the association to be on better ground, and I will do everything I can to continue the tradition of excellence. As the golf season comes to a close, I encourage you to bring your assistants to one of our social and educational meetings this winter. I cannot stress enough the importance, for them and the association, of allowing assistants to become involved in the CAGCS. So the next time you are at a meeting and you see a guy in funny pants, or a crazy jacket, that is probably me. I hope you stop for a minute and say hello. I hope to see you all very soon. Seasons Greetings from the CAGCS Board of Directors December 2013 Connecticut Clippings Page 9 New England Regional Turfgrass Conference & Show-March 3-6, 2014 It is that time of year again as all the outdoor work is winding down and winter cold once again introduces itself to the northeast to think about the New England Regional Turfgrass Conference and Show among other activities. 2014 will be the 17th annual show to be held in Providence. The schedule is filled with quality speakers and topics that consistently affect the Turfgrass Industry in New England. We have arranged 9 seminars on Monday (7-4 hr. and 2-2 hr. seminars) addressing topics from Dollar Spot, Professional Development, to the Rules of Golf. A new and interesting seminar will be taught by GCS Jason Van Bus Kirk of Stow Acres Country Club on using Google Applications to help you manage. You can go to www.nertf. org and see the complete descriptions of the seminars and online registration is already up and running. Tuesday is chock full with a full day of USGA related topics and sports turf also going on. On Tuesday at 3:45 we decided to do something different than a typical keynote speaker. We have planned a presentation on a spotlighted sporting event like a super bowl or a world series that all turfgrass managers would be interested in. Our speaker is the best in the Baseball Business, Mr. David Mellor, Director of Grounds for the Boston Red Sox. What a year for Boston both good and bad. We are excited to hear it from David’s perspective. This will be a speaker you won’t want to miss as he highlights the year and shows you the challenges of managing Fenway especially in the spotlight of the World Series. Wednesday and Thursday, another 2 great days of informative speakers and topics addressing our industry needs here in New England. Professors John Kaminski (Penn State) and Jim Murphy (Rutgers), among others, as well as most of our local researchers will be participating again this year. We have also, Matt Shaffer, GCS of Merion and this year’s US Open lead man will be on the program talking about his experiences on Wednesday morning, March 5. The equipment technicians have a full day on Wednesday with important education with equipment representatives and equipment observations on the trade show floor. The trade show will again be open for 13 hours over the 3 days and we hope you will be able to accomplish whatever business you need to attend to on the floor over that time. Booth sales have been strong again as exhibitors look at these three days as important opportunities to reach out to potential customers as everyone prepares for the coming season. As you start your planning we know you will see the values associated with this year’s show and the benefits you and your team will gather from the opportunities of learning and the information available that will make your job go smoother in the year to come. There will be a lot of turf activity in Providence the week of March 3th-6th with much to take advantage of. Reread the operator’s manual. Just a quick glance at safety tips can reinforce even the most experienced operator. Be sure to wear the proper protective gear. My research shows that a staff member can be outfitted with the proper safety gear for under $500. Be sure your tools and saws are safe for use. Consider outside resources and education that are available as well. UConn extension (linked here) and Connecticut Tree Protective Association (linked here) are two valuable tools that can reinforce and educate on proper procedures. Both Stihl and Husqvarna offer free safety videos online as well. Potentially dangerous equipment doesn’t end there. Chippers for tree and brush disposal add another layer of hazard to tree removal. Those doing irrigation upgrades or drainage projects are not free of hazardous equipment use either. Trenching machines, open trenches, and buried surprises create opportunities for injuries from minor to severe. I don’t mean to point out flaws or play OSHA, only to reiterate the need for safety. My position has exposed me to stories of superintendents and staff that have fallen off ladders (with and without chainsaws), chainsaw accidents, wood chipper accidents, and so on. Hopefully you get the point. Staff exposure and training on mowing equipment is often extensive, with many followup hours of operation to reinforce proper use. The off season brings different hazards with sporadic use intervals that can only add to the potential for injury. This is the season for all in the golf industry to enjoy more time with family and friends. Please be safe, so they get to enjoy you in one piece too. GCSAA Resources and Deadlines Does your employer offer you a financial tool to Kevin’s Corner “Oh, you work on a golf course. What do you do in the winter?” Does that question sound familiar? How many times have you answered that, or some variation of it? To the uninformed, golf is a seasonal leisure sport that is over when they stop playing, or is ready for the season when they bring the sticks out again. We know better. This is the time of year when many large projects and changes occur at our clubs that can make a real impact on the health, aesthetics, and playability of the golf course. Many of these projects require a different skill and level of expertise. While often outsourced, many of you will undertake projects that will expose you and your staff to potential hazards not seen during the day to day grind of the golf season. I ask that you be careful, stress safety, and also know that there are resources available for you and your staff. Is it time to break out the chainsaws and get a little light on those tees and greens? If the answer is yes, there is more healthy turf in your future. There is also some inherent danger with the process as well. Not surprisingly, chainsaws are listed among the most dangerous tools. Current statistics are not easily found, but this blast from the past courtesy of the Consumer Product Safety Commission can easily be adjusted for 2013: • 40,000+ injuries by chain saws in U.S. annually • Average chainsaw injury requires 110 stitches • Average medical cost was $5,600 in 1989; $12,000 in 2000 Mike Dukette 860.930.8888 mdukette@harrells.com Jim Wierzbicki 860.424.7250 jwierzbicki@harrells.com www.harrells.com Thank you for your business.
