The Connecticut Association of Golf Course Superintendents (CAGCS) was selected to receive the 2013 Excellence in Government Relations Award from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). The award will be presented at the 2013 GCSAA Education Conference at the Opening Session, presented in partnership with Syngenta, Feb. 6. The conference (Feb. 4-8) was held in conjunction with the Golf Industry Show (Feb. 6-7) at the San Diego Convention Center. “The Connecticut Association of Golf Course Superintendents is to be congratulated for its successful efforts in demonstrating the stewardship of its members,” GCSAA President Sandy Queen, CGCS, said. “The chapter was able to lobby effectively because it was organized, created key messages and GCSAA Industry Show - San Diego, CA - EGR Award - Pictured:l to r - Peter Gorman, Marc Weston, CGCS, Donald Beck, Mark Mansur, John Garcia, Eric Morrison, CGCS, Scott Ramsay, CGCS March 2013 / April 2013 Connecticut Clippings Page 2 Just like the GCSAA, the Connecticut Association of Golf Course Superintendents emulates those membership qualities. As a member of the CAGCS, you have the ability to network with colleagues and share ideas pertinent to your needs. The CAGCS also provides a platform that can provide you the opportunity to become involved outside of your own facility. Whether it’s a position on the board of directors, providing assistance on an association committee, testifying at the State Capitol on industry issues that are subject to legislation, or volunteering your time in some benevolent manner, the choice is yours. As a member of the CAGCS, the value of your investment is made known through all of the effort and hard work put forth by many volunteers and those who have been involved at the board level over many years. Golf meetings, winter seminars, testimony at the State Capitol, and partnership with UCONN Turfgrass Science are some of the initiatives that the association concentrates its efforts. However, the real value is what you put into it as a member. In the March issue of Golf Course Industry magazine, When we become members in associations like the GCSAA and the CAGCS, it was considered that we join because it was the right thing to do. However, today, when we consider joining professional organizations, it’s based more on value and what will be the return on our “investment”. The GCSAA has made their mark on promoting membership through advancement and advocating. They offer tools and resources that help effectively manage your facilities, keep you connected with an industry of colleagues, promote your career, and help educate and manage a better work life balance. Bruce Williams writes an excellent piece on association involvement. He illustrates that there is a time commitment, but at the end of the day, a valuable investment takes time. And speaking of time, we certainly welcome Springtime! As all of our schedules start to 􀃀􀁏􀁏􀀃􀁘􀁓􀀃􀁚􀁌􀁗􀁋􀀃􀁌􀁑􀁇􀁘􀁖􀁗􀁕􀁜􀀃􀁚􀁌􀁇􀁈􀀃􀁈􀁙􀁈􀁑􀁗􀁖􀀏􀀃􀀬􀀃􀁚􀁒􀁘􀁏􀁇􀀃 like to remind everyone that on Wednesday, May 1, there will be “Golf Industry Day” at the State Capitol in Hartford. We will be set up in the Capitol Building itself - a much more spacious and impressive location than the tunnel hallway that we used last year. As well, Legislature will be in session, and we’ve been told by our Representative 􀁉􀁕􀁌􀁈􀁑􀁇􀁖􀀃 􀁗􀁋􀁄􀁗􀀃 􀁅􀁜􀀃 􀁇􀁒􀁌􀁑􀁊􀀃 􀁗􀁋􀁌􀁖􀀃 􀁒􀁑􀀃 􀁗􀁋􀁈􀀃 􀃀􀁕􀁖􀁗􀀃 Wednesday in May (in the Capitol itself) we should have greater visibility and more actual contact with legislators than we did last year. Golf course superintendents and industry representatives, along with their families came together for a day of camaraderie, powder skiing and competition on the slopes of Vermont. In 1993 members of the Vermont GCSA and the Northeastern GCSA began a friendly rivalry to be held on the slopes of Vermont’s ski areas each year. This year, members of both associations decided to open up the event to all the GCS associations throughout the Northeastern US and Canada. The turnout was fantastic for the inaugural event as over 100 members from the Northeast made the trek to Killington for the day’s festivities. The weather gods blessed the event with 12-14 inches of new snow the night before so the skiing was superb! Ironically enough the giant slalom race had to be canceled due to the heavy snowfall the night before. Conditions were deemed unsafe on the course and all racing was halted for the day including the Killington Mountain School program. That did not stop anyone from having a great day in the fresh powder. The 2013 trophies will be stored until next year’s event, so start making plans to join us in 2014! After a great day on the slopes, attendees were treated to an outstanding Après Ski party at the Wobbly Barn on the Killington access road. Killington was very gracious in hosting the group by providing affordable pricing on lodging and highly discounted lift tickets for those who stayed and skied through the weekend! The Planning Committee, after seeing what a great success the day was, is already working on plans for the 2014 Nor’easter Ski Day. Watch your emails this fall for registration information! The combined ski day is a great way for the golf industry to get together in the off-season, enjoy the outdoors and to build on the unique camaraderie that the industry presents. The ski race will be a team event in which 􀁈􀁄􀁆􀁋􀀃􀁄􀁖􀁖􀁒􀁆􀁌􀁄􀁗􀁌􀁒􀁑􀀃􀃀􀁈􀁏􀁇􀁖􀀃􀁄􀁗􀀃􀁏􀁈􀁄􀁖􀁗􀀃􀁄􀀃􀀙􀀐􀁐􀁄􀁑􀀃􀁗􀁈􀁄􀁐􀀃 with prizes for individual accomplishments as well as the coveted team “Nor’easter Cup” which was custom built by local superintendents. We are happy with the response.” A total of 4,560 seminar seats were sold, while thousands more attended complimentary forums, sessions and panel discussions during the week. Subject matter included agronomics, business, environmental management, communications, leadership, technology, and personnel management. The GCSAA Education Conference, held in conjunction with the Golf Industry Show, is the largest educational conference in the turfgrass management industry. Covering all ranges of golf course management, including agronomics, environmental management, communication and business management information, the conference included more than 100 seminars, as well as numerous education sessions. “The show was fantastic,” said Jim Flett, GCSAA Class A member at Muskoka Lakes Golf & Country Club in Midland, Ontario, Canada. “I enjoyed the education 􀁒􀁑􀀃 􀁗􀁋􀁈􀀃 􀁗􀁕􀁄􀁇􀁈􀀃 􀁖􀁋􀁒􀁚􀀃 􀃁􀁒􀁒􀁕􀀑􀀃 􀀬􀁗􀀃 enabled me to get some good information while I was visiting the booths. A graduate of Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo., Finlen cut his teeth in the business in Kansas City at Lake Quivira Golf and Country Club, and had stops in Virginia and at the Bayonet and Black Horse Courses in Seaside, Calif. Keith A. Ihms, CGCS at Country Club of Little Rock (Ark.) was elected vice president, and John J. O’Keefe, CGCS, director of golf course management at Preakness Hills Country Club in Wayne, N.J., was elected secretary/treasurer. Peter J. Grass, CGCS at Hilands Golf Club in Billings, Mont., was re-elected to a two-year term, and Darren J. Davis, GCSAA Class A member at Olde Florida Golf Club in Naples, Fla., was elected to a two-year term after serving a one-year appointment in 2012. Newly elected to the board was John R.
