Volume 49, No 4 December 2015 2015 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD WINNER, MARK MANSUR The CAGCS would like to bestow a special honor on a much deserving individual for a 2015 “Distinguished Service Award”. Our honoree grew up in the Boston area and was always interested in the green industry. He received a degree in Plant Biology/Horticulture from the University of New Hampshire in 1990. While attending a golf show in Boston, his friendly personality led him into a conversation with representatives of New Seabury Resort & CC. This meeting led him to meet then begin working for Tom Columbo at New Seabury the next season. After his time at New Seabury, our honoree moved on to an Assistant Superintendent’s position at Dennis Pines GC where he spent five years. Then he left Cape Cod and moved to Metro New York to work for his Mentor, Dennis Flynn, at Brae Burn CC where he spent four years before taking the Superintendent’s position at Richter Park GC in 2001. In 2006 he became the Superintendent at Wintonbury Hills GC in Bloomfield, CT, the position he holds today. As I am sure you know by now our honoree is Mark Mansur. Mark has been a member of the CAGCS Board since 2002 working tirelessly for our association for over 13 years. Today, Mark lives in Canton with his wife, Katie, and sons, Jack, 16, and Logan, 14. Mark is a rabid sports fan and a Boston sports fan at that. When not working, Mark enjoys coaching and watching his son’s sporting events including baseball & basketball. Something you may not know is that Mark was an outstanding amateur soccer player ranked 1 or 2 in Massachusetts soccer during his high school years. Mark was recruited by several division 1 college teams. Mark has a few true loves in his personal life and they are his wife Katie, their sons Jack and Logan as well as his dogs Cooper and Otis. Whenever time allows, Mark enjoys getting away and spending time with his family at the beach! It is my great pleasure to present Mark Mansur with a plaque and chair for his service and commitment to our association! Jim Favreau, Commercial Representative to the Board In This Issue... Here are some of the highlights from their conversation. I started out my talk with Eric by reminiscing with him about how he started in this business many, many years ago working for me at Pilgrims Harbor. Eric started working summers for me at The Harbor and continued to work throughout Connecticut Clippings is an official publication of the Connecticut Association of Golf Course Superintendents Newsletter Editor Heather Garvin Newsletter Committee Bob Chalifour, CGCS (ret.) Box 3678 Woodbridge, CT 06525 203/387-0810 high school and college (1988-1994). Little did we know back then that this would be the start of Eric’s career as a Golf Course superintendent. Eric went off to UCONN in 1990; he earned a degree in psychology in 1994. That psychology degree is quite useful in our line of work! He then went on to attend the UMASS winter school in 1997. Eric quickly put his schooling to work and began working for Gary Glazier at Burning Tree C.C. as his Assistant. In 2001 Eric became the Head Golf Course Superintendent at Royal Shenny, a position he still holds today. Eric’s course has been the host club for the Connecticut PGA Senior Open from 1998 - present. During his career Eric has received many accolades. In 2005 he became a Certified Golf Corse Superintendent along with completing the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program. In 2012 Eric became the first recipient of the Morrison Medal; this award is given out annually in his name in recognition for outstanding contributions and representing the spirit of the Connecticut PGA Senior Open. In 2012 Eric was promoted to the position of Manager of the Golf Course and Parks Maintenance for the Town of Groton. In his free time Eric enjoys, golfing and snowboarding. He spends lots of time with his close knit family many of who still live close by in Connecticut. He especially appreciates time spent with his dad Andy who lives in Clinton, His mom Michele is also close by in Woodstock and his sister Kelly, her husband Nick and his niece Alicia and nephew Dylan are in Cheshire. Most importantly he cherishes his time with his beloved daughter Shelby. Please join me in welcoming Eric Morrison as our new CAGCS President! KEEPING THINGS INTERESTING SINCE 1958. This meeting gives us an opportunity to get caught up on the plans and candidates for the board of the GCSAA and to meet and get acquainted with the staff and facilities at our headquarters. The following is a report from the 2015 delegates meeting this week October 27-29 in Kansas. As I mentioned, a primary task of the meeting is to meet the current board and the candidates for office as we vote for them. Each of you has the option to vote individually and can contact me or Mary Jo to be sure you have a vote in the process. Otherwise our votes are cast by me as a block. Below is a list of the candidates. Feel free to give me call to discuss the candidates or voting process further. Elections/Candidates for the board and officers: Peter Grass, CGCS – President – Hilands Golf Club, Billings, Montana Bill Maynard, CGCS - Vice President – The Country Club of St Albans, Saint Albans, Missouri Rafael Barajas, CGCS - Secretary/ Treasurer – Hacienda Golf Club, La Habra Heights, California Darren Davis, CGCS - Secretary/Treasurer – Olde Florida Golf Club, Naples, Florida Kevin Breen, CGCS - Director, - La Rinconada Country Club, Monte Sereno, California Rory Van Poucke - Director – Apache Sun Golf Course, San Tan Valley, Arizona John Walker - Director - Bentwater Yacht and Country Club, Montgomery, Texas Jeffrey Millies, CGCS – Director, Edgewood Golf Course, Big Bend, Wisconsin We were also updated on the proposed bylaw changes associated with the board’s plan for membership classification. The changes require updated wording in the membership descriptions. A change of the “Superintendent Member” class to “Class B” is the most pertinent aspect of this. Our Government Relations Chair, Scott Ramsay, CGCS has spoken extensively about the high quality effort of the GCSAA’s Government relations director Chava McKeel who spoke to us about our status on the regulatory front and the expansion of the GCSAA’s staff in this area. Your delegate, Steve Curry National Golf Day in Washington, D.C. is May 18th and all are encouraged to attend if possible. December 2015 Connecticut Clippings Kevin’s Corner and-go” condition when the ambulance finally left. I had just arrived at Long Meadow Golf Club for the GCSA of New England board meeting in advance of the nine-hole golf and membership meeting. I was in a great mood as the facility holds a special place in my past. I had caddied in the Lowell (MA) City Tournament for a family friend in my youth (about a thousand years ago), and grew up not too far away in Dracut, Massachusetts. Oh, and it wasn’t far from home. My thoughts were with him the entire day, and still are as I write this article, but I am not looking to dwell on the seriousness of the member’s health issue. What I do want to elaborate on are a few key items that may have saved his life: The buzzing noise going off in the lounge area when I walked in was, well, alarming! As the door closes behind me, a staff member scurries past on his way onto the golf course carrying an automated external defibrillators (AED). Another staff member can be heard telling someone on the phone “we have a man down.” Minutes later, an ambulance can be seen following a utility vehicle onto the property. The plan: One of the Long Meadow board members joined our group after the meeting portion had concluded and we had a chance to chat. It was then that I learned that Long Meadow does indeed have a plan for medical emergencies, and that the staff have had drills in the recent past. I was to learn later that it was a well-liked, long time member who went into cardiac arrest on the first hole. He was in “touch- The alarm: There was no doubt about what was happening. The alarm was indeed to alert staff that there was an emergency taking place. The AED: It was my understanding through comments of those with knowledge of the situation, that the AED was utilized. What an asset. I would really like this situation to raise Page 4 awareness to you and your facilities. What would happen if this were to occur at your course? Is there a plan in place? Are there personnel on staff that are trained in CPR and the operation of an AED? Is there an AED on the property? If the clubhouse is an answer to any of the above then please answer another question; who is most likely to encounter a member or patron under medical duress while playing golf, the clubhouse staff or grounds staff? Are you trained to handle such a situation, is your assistant? Is the cost of training a question or issue? If so, what is the value your facility places on the safety of your membership or customers, because you or someone on your staff may very well be the one to respond to a golfer in need of medical assistance first! In the last GCSA of New England’s issue of The Newsletter, I opined about the opportunity to utilize the staff to plan for success in the 2016 season. Perhaps within that SCOR plan development – under “opportunities” – CPR/AED training and safety plan procedures should be added. I am truly hopeful that Long Meadow’s alarm, plan and AED provided one of December 2015 Connecticut Clippings their members a fighting chance today. My thoughts and prayers are with him. We, in New England are very fortunate to have such great Turfgrass Research, Diagnostic & Education resources like we do. Today’s industry involves dealing with high expectations and projecting professionalism in order to be successful. To stay integrated and to help lead the New England Turfgrass Industry, we, the current participants must continue to support these resources that support all of us. They can’t do it on their own and we can’t do it alone. Here are 5 great ways to get involved: 1. Support your Local Chapters. Hold meetings at your facility, serve on committees, attend meetings, and encourage others to do the same. Organization will make us stronger as an industry to help each other. All members can each make a difference, you too! 2. Plan to attend your New England   3. Look for opportunities to attend Turfgrass Field Days. By supporting field days you will not only help universities, but your own knowledge will grow as you observe ongoing research, hear presentations, question university researchers and interact with fellow turfgrass managers. 4. Communicate with universities concerning your staffing needs. As schools educate the future leaders of our industry, their employment will ensure our educational programs will be intact into the future. Graduates need a door into the industry. Hire an intern and be a mentor! 5. Participate in Tee-Up New England. Go to your club and ask for a very simple donation of a foursome with carts to be auctioned for Turfgrass Research in New England. More participating clubs means increased funding for turfgrass research in New England that could help you! Go to www.tee-upnewengland.com for more information and join the effort. These are just some of the things each of us can do, and should, to support the industry and ourselves. Many of you I’m sure are involved and we congratulate you. Your participation will aid the future growth and stability of the industry. We have witnessed over the last years since our personal introduction to the industry many positive accomplishments and prospects for the future. Maybe things could be worse. If our mentality is, mission accomplished or they don’t need me, then you are missing opportunities to help yourself and the industry. Remember….the road to success is always under construction! Atlantic Golf and Turf renewed their commitment to supporting education for CAGCS members signing on to be the Presenting Partner for the third consecutive year. The presentations and speakers were selected to build on the 2015 theme of “Sustainability in Golf”, with topics focusing on strategies to reduce the number of inputs required to produce the playing conditions desired by today’s golfers. Dr. Stacy Bonos from Rutgers provided strategies for selecting the right turf varieties and species for your application, and demonstrated how to navigate the NTEP web site to identify the varieties that were best suited to your site. She also suggested using test plots in a nursery before committing to a large scale conversion to a new variety. Dr. Paul Koch from the University of Wisconsin- Madison discussed the topic of reduced-risk disease control. He showed how it is possible to effectively control the most challenging diseases and reduce the impact of our programs by selecting reduced risk products, and products with higher Environmental Impact Quotients should be avoided. In his second presentation, Dr. Koch described strategies for reducing the amount of pesticides applied to fairways, which represents the greatest potential for reducing both the cost and environmental impact of our management programs due to the area covered by the applications. Dr. Albrecht Koppenhofer, also from Rutgers, provided the results from his latest research on managing pesticide resistance and annual bluegrass weevils, which was partially funded by CAGCS. He suggested that efforts to control resistant populations should focus on larval stages. For managers working with sensitive populations, the best strategy to avoid developing resistance is to change control products and strategy after the second year. Michael Chrzanowski from Madison Country Club described the lessons learned during a recent full course re-grassing and renovation project that focused on shifting toward more sustainable turf species and varieties. He described some of the unique strategies that were utilized to complete the project in a very short time period. His presentation provided a real world example of the concepts described in the first and last talks of the seminar. Dr. John Inguagiato provided an update on a current project that was originally proposed at the 2014 Winter Seminar, that is based on developing best management practices for regrassing fairways. Their goal is to determine the best combination of eradication and establishment techniques, as well as the best timing to initiate such a project so that the loss of revenue is minimized. His research can be seen up close with more in depth discussion on July 19th at UCONN’s Field Day at the Turf Research Farm in Storrs. The board of directors would like to thank the speakers, the attendees, and our loyal sponsors for making it possible for CAGCS to provide this educational opportunity to its members.
