Volume 50, No 4 December 2016 2017 Winter Seminar The 2017 Winter Seminar was again held at the Mystic Marriott in Groton on Tuesday January 10th. Thank you to Presenting Partner, Atlantic Golf and Turf and Gold Sponsors, Turf Products Corp. and Tom Irwin Inc. for their support of education. The presentations and speakers were selected to further learning in environmentally sound application of turf management practices. Our first speaker, Dr. Patricia Vittum from the University of Massachusetts thoroughly covered “Managing Turf Insects in Sensitive Environments”. Pat reviewed sensitive environments and addressed potential means of impact and how to avoid them. Our second speaker, Jake Straub, owner of Back to Basic Soil Consulting, covered the importance of understanding the value of a healthy ecosystem for best results in terms of turf quality and minimizing expensive and unsound inputs. Dr. Frank Wong of Bayer Environmental Science then gave us an in depth overview of the expanding fungicide class, SDHI and how best to avoid developing resistance. The afternoon session started off with an energetic and exciting talk by GCSAA CEO, Rhett Evans. Rhett covered “Going Forward” specifically referring to our, (as a Chapter and individually) connection with the GCSAA in very inspirational style. Dr. Vittum returned to give her always informative “Year in Review of Turf Insects”. As to be expected Pat delivered a thorough and useful overview of her observations from 2016 and provided insight as how best to move forward with insect management and control. Dr. Wong closed out the seminar with an inspiring discussion of “Protecting Pollinators on Golf Courses”. Frank addressed the variety of lessor known pollinators as well as honey bees and how best to manage turf with little or no impact. The slate of speakers for the January 9, 2018 Seminar has been filled and is shaping up to be yet another tremendous program. Please plan to attend. The Board of Directors would like to thank the speakers, attendees and our presenting, gold, silver and bronze sponsors in making it possible for CAGCS to provide this excellent education. We closed out our 2016 calendar last fall with the Superintendent/Assistant tournament at the Hop Meadow Country Club on October 3rd, with Bill Demur hosting us. It was a good day of golfing… we even had to let this guy play through! Eric Morrison, CGCS Happy New Year! 2017 is here…I’m sure that many of us are happy to see 2016 in the rear view mirror, and are thoroughly enjoying the off season. Hopefully, you are spending some time away from the office and enjoying some down time with your families. Last year was another hot and dry season that stretched us, our staff, and our patience thin. Maybe we will be luckier this upcoming season and Mother Connecticut Clippings is an official publication of the Connecticut Association of Golf Course Superintendents Newsletter Editor Heather Garvin Newsletter Committee Bob Chalifour, CGCS (ret.) At the end of October, Peter Gorman hosted our annual meeting at the Pine Orchard Yacht and Country Club… another soggy adventure in Branford! The event calendar closed out with the annual CAGCS Christmas Party at J. Timothy’s on December 1st. I would like to thank all of our members and their clubs for hosting these events. Thank you to Seeton Turf Warehouse, Winfield Solutions, and Harrell’s for being the presenting partners of these meetings, and thanks to all of the other sponsors for supporting CAGCS at these events. If you are interested in serving on a committee to help out and learn more about the board, please don’t hesitate to contact any of the CAGCS board members. We could always use the help and are always looking for new ideas. We have a good schedule of events lined up for the 2017 calendar year which is now up on the website at cagcs.com; hopefully we will cross paths at many of these throughout the year. The Nor’easter Ski Day at Killington is on February 16th this year, so maybe I will see you on the slopes! Enjoy the rest of the off season, and I wish everyone a successful, healthy, and happy new year. Eric Morrison, CGCS December 2016 Connecticut Clippings Page 3 National Golf Day As I am writing this article there is a lot of news surrounding the National Mall, Washington DC and the most recent Inauguration, these events have me looking forward to National Golf Day(NGD) on April 26, 2017. GCSAA has partnered with We Are Golf(WAG) to advocate for the game of golf. The other partners in the coalition include the USGA, PGA, LPGA and many oth-ers. NGD has grown into a sizable venture with hundreds of meetings with Congress and Fed-eral agencies, like the EPA and Small Business Administration, to promote the benefits of golf and the potential impacts that legislation and rules can have on our game. GCSAA is a driving force in the WAG coalition and has developed an Army of grass roots am-bassadors that visit with our respective legislators and agencies to give a face to the game and explain just how impactful Washington DC can be to our properties and professions. We also educate on the benefits of golf, whether it’s open space, exercise, philanthropy, and it’s economic impact. The folks in Congress are always surprised when they are informed that golf pro-vides more to charity than all of the other major professional sports leagues combined. Golf Course Superintendents have adopted advocacy as an important activity at the state and federal levels, these efforts are setting us apart from our peers in the golf community. I have had many proud moments in my career but I have never been as proud as seeing the Golf Course Superintendent contingent walking the halls of Congress, meeting with Senators and House Representatives to promote golf. We (GCS’s)are the advocacy leaders in the golf industry just by the sheer numbers of our ambassadors who have volunteered to get involved and do mean-ingful work. Thank you for your support and there is always a place for you in our grass roots campaign. Get involved or just follow along. Advocacy is the primary goal of NGD but we also want to give back as a group and volunteer our time to community service. GCSAA is making arrangements to work with the National Park Service and Mike Stachowicz to spend some time around America’s Front Yard. Details to fol-low. Advocacy is important for our properties but it also has a direct professional. Golf Course Super-intendents have set themselves apart from our industry partners by strongly adopting advocacy. I personally have been in meetings with Golf Channel celebrities, folks from the CT License J-3 IRRIGATI ON · DE S IG N · B UI LD Serving New England and the Tri-State Area Chris Daigle Scott Ramsay, CGCS Yale Golf Club, Golf Course Superintendent Building efficient Programs to help you succeed!! 279958 860.378.0071 PGA Tour and others, they always look to the Golf Course Superintendent to get each meeting started and provide the real stories and challenges that affect golf on a daily basis. Congratulations to those that did both well. Typically, my newsletter offering is an article on one particular topic. I’ve covered a lot of topics through my tenure and have your newsletter editor and board to thank for the opportunity. Of the many outreaches I make and member needs that I address or forward, my newsletter input garners the most member feedback! Full disclosure: I have low standards. When I am told, “I see your mug everywhere,” I take that as a compliment and add that to the “I like your newsletter input” column. While that might be a stretch, it is the column that is always full. I have gotten requests from members about topics, and have written about them, so if you have any topic you would like covered, please let me know and I will do my best. This particular issue is more of a rambling: some small topics that I have come across that might not warrant full-page attention. All politics are local. That is not an earthshattering statement. But 2016 brought more and more political pressure, aimed at golf specifically, around the region. Water has been in the limelight, but nutrients, pollinators, and pesticide issues have been prevalent as well. Superintendents have worked to educate on each item across many fronts. Bob Searle in Maine, Ken Lallier, CGCS and Kevin Komer, CGCS in Researchers continue to deliver valuable information on turf types that can make a positive impact on our courses and environment. “Tolerant” and “resistant” are words that make pathologists worth their weight in gold, and get the immediate attention of superintendents. If sociologists could study how to make club members and golfers more tolerant and less resistant, we might have a good thing going! Superintendents in the region dealt with a very difficult 2016 turf season, and I take my hats off to you all, but overwhelmingly I am told that it was communication that got them through. The tools that were used may have been different, but the result was nearly always the same: the less water being used on the turf, the more communication it took to manage the important decision Page 4 Vermont, Greg Cormier, CGCS and Peter Rappoccio, CGCS in Massachusetts, Jim Ritorto in Rhode Island, Peter Gorman and Scott Ramsay, CGCS in Connecticut and many more superintendents and valued vendors have worked hard to push back against regulations and legislation that would make our day-to-day jobs more difficult. Times have changed, and with that, so has our role in the golf industry. We all need to be vigilant and advocate in support of our role as environmental stewards. Finally, I want to add this last note. It was something that was not in my original article but having heard this from another superintendent, I thought it relevant. Superintendents and many facilities graciously offer our peers in the profession the opportunity to play golf for free. This is a privilege, not a right; no facility is forced to do so. Our industry operates using a code of ethics. The GCSAA has them as part of membership and you attest to having read them when you join. Many local chapters maintain a code of ethics standard as well. Having to contact the host superintendent to alert them that you will be on the property is part of these codes. This does not put the host superintendent into a position to alter his daily routines, change management practices, or ensure that every putt a colleague makes go in. What it does do is offer the simple courtesy of alerting your host that you will be there. I have never heard that an outreach to a colleague has led to rose pedals being placed at the visitor’s feet upon making their way to the first tee. What I have heard many times is the extreme frustration of a host in finding out that a colleague has been on property without notifying the host. Please consider this when making plans to visit another golf course. While the upside may be small, the downside could may make an impact on how you are viewed by your peers. Golf is a sport of integrity, ensure you keep yours intact.
