Volume 51, No 3 September 2017 Commissioner of Water Planning Council to present State Water Plan at Keney Park Meeting CAGCS has a history of leadership and cooperation in developing guidelines to preserve and protect the valuable water resources in Connecticut. In 2006, the CT Department of Environmental Protection published the “Best Management Practices for Golf Course Water Use”, which was funded by the US EPA and the Clean Water Act. The document was developed by representatives from a variety of backgrounds, including CAGCS members Heather Garvin, Timothy O’Neil CGCS, Peter Pierson, Steve Rackliffe CGCS, and John Ruzsbatzky, CGCS. The document was developed to “promote water conservation, preserve or improve water quality and protect water resources.” Over the last decade, golf courses have come under increasing scrutiny and criticism by conservation groups, especially regarding water use and the impact of fertilizer and pest control applications on the local environment. CAGCS is working to build on the efforts of GCSAA and the USGA to educate the public about the environmental benefits golf courses provide their local communities, and to promote superintendents as leaders in the effort to preserve and improve the natural resources we manage. Since 2015, the Connecticut State Golf Association has relied on CAGCS to represent the golf industry in the development of the state water plan. The CAGCS Board is looking to capitalize on this opportunity by working with UCONN and state regulatory officials to update the existing Best Management Practices for Water Use on Golf Courses document as part of the effort to develop comprehensive BMP’s. Our goal is to promote and build upon the current conservation and water quality preservation efforts of superintendents, and connect all future regulations and legislation to the existing and proposed BMP documents. A critical step toward achieving these goals is earning the confidence of the regulatory and elected officials. CAGCS has invited Jack Betkoski, chairman of the Water Planning Council, to speak to our membership at the Superintendent/Assistant Tournament on Tuesday, October 10th, at Keney Park Golf Course in Hartford. Mr. Betkoski will be speaking about water planning in Connecticut, and will introduce the State Water Plan that will be presented to the legislature in January. Golf was invited to participate throughout the development of the plan, and it is extremely important that CAGCS members attend the presentation to reaffirm the fact that superintendents, as responsible managers of water resources, are eager to participate in developing strategies that will preserve our right to use water responsibly and contribute to effective water management efforts in the future. The CAGCS Board encourage all members to attend the presentation, and participate in the effort to promote our profession and preserve our ability to manage our water resources in the future. August. Ever. (for the Northeast) The 100 days of Hell froze over early with tremendous August weather. Finally Mother Nature heeded our collective prayers and gave us a respite from the trends of the last couple years. Hopefully everyone was able to take advantage of the fall weather in August to sleep soundly at night and take a few days off to enjoy time with family and friends. As I write this, recovery efforts are in full swing in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, and Hurricane Irma is bearing down on Florida. GCSAA has had a disaster relief fund in place since Hurricane Katrina in 2006. They have ramped up their fundraising efforts recently due to what has occurred in Texas and Louisiana. CAGCS has given $1,000 to the cause to help out our brethren who have been adversely affected by these catastrophes. Now back to your local programming… On July 10th, we held our blind partners event, which was also the New England team qualifier and the 2nd round of the CAGCS Championship at H. Smith Richardson Golf Course. Thanks to host superintendent Peter Grace, our presenting partner, The Plant Food Company, and all of the other sponsors for the event. It turned out to be a spectacular day, and thank goodness my blind partner played well! Family Day was held at Lake Compounce again on August 20th; my family attended again this year and the kids had a great time. Thank you to all of the sponsors for continuing to support this event. Turnout this year was approximately half of the previous years…in light of this fact, the board is looking at alternative activities As this is my last President’s message, I would like to thank Bruce Morse for getting me involved with the CAGCS board. It has been a professionally rewarding trek from golf chair to what will soon be past President. I also want to thank all of the board members along the way that I have served with; the personal relationships forged will last long beyond my tenure on the board. Finally, thank you Mary Jo for all you have done for me during my two year term as President and everything you do for CAGCS and its membership on a daily basis. UCONN’s After Hours program was August 1, and has become a highlight of the long summer season. After Hours is an evening educational and social event held at the UCONN research facility in Storrs. The UCONN turfgrass science team leads an hour-long tour of current golf turf specific research studies followed by a barbeque dinner. This year, research presentations covered a broad range of topics. Graduate student Zoë Esponda provided an update of her new fairway renovation research. Her study is the culmination of 4 years of research, and will provide valuable recommendations for those considering renovating golf course fairways. A particularly interesting component of this study is looking at herbicide and PGR treatments for early control of annual bluegrass in new seeded bentgrass fairways. Next, attendees had As always, if you are interested in hosting a meeting or helping out on the board in any capacity, contact a board member or give the office a call. This trial gives superintendents a great opportunity to see important differences in density, color, texture, and disease tolerance among recently introduced bentgrass cultivars. The tour then moved into the turfgrass pathology research. This year’s studies focused on dollar spot and anthracnose control. Efficacy of several new fungicides were highlighted during the tour. Lastly, the NTEP fine fescue fairway trial under simulated golf cart traffic was presented by Steve Rackliffe. The study features a few surprisingly traffic tolerant fine fescue cultivars, which have performed particularly well under simulated golf cart traffic with ultra-low fertilizer and irrigation inputs. Following the research tour, attendees gathered under the tent for some outstanding Bear’s Smokehouse barbeque, UCONN Dairy Bar ice cream, and a great chance to catch up with friends. After Hours is held during the alternate year from the UCONN Turfgrass Field Day. It is a great partnership between UCONN and the CAGCS, and also benefits through the support of valued sponsors including: Atlantic Golf and Turf, Bayer, Harrells, Hart Seed, and Syngenta. Bayer Environmental Science is the presenting sponsor of the event. Education will be provided, with networking opportunities as well! A recent blog I wrote featured a short description of several allied organizations using the benefits of golf to make our industry better for those of us in it and those outside of golf. It was lengthy, but I hope informative. If you’d like to check it out, you can find my blog here: http://gcsaa-northeast. blogspot.com/ . This issue, I’d like to offer a couple summer snippets regarding topics that are touched on fairly frequently. In the early spring issue, I wrote about the impact of using “thank you” as a manager of people. I heard feedback from many members about the message portrayed in the article. What I did not touch on was hearing that same phrase from folks above us, those we answer to, and ultimately, our end users, the golfers. I have volunteered at many events hosted by the USGA, PGA, and LPGA, and as I write this portion of the article from the U.S. Women’s Open, I don’t recall ever having a professional golfer visit the maintenance staff to offer thanks for the hard work, until now. The event management company partnering with the USGA for the event arrived on Monday afternoon with a “special guest,” LPGA golfer Belen Mozo. Mozo was very appreciative of the efforts by the staff and lauded the conditions of the course. It felt very rewarding. Whether it is coming from a golfer playing at the highest level, board member, or avid daily fee golfer, be sure to share those positive comments you hear with your staff. It will be rewarding for them to hear and may have motivating factors too! There are several action alerts up at GCSAA.org of which you should take note. Just taking two minutes to fill in your personal information will allow the website to populate a message, and with your approval, send it directly to your legislator. Don’t think it will make a difference? I fill them out regularly and was contacted by my New Hampshire state senator’s office regarding WOTUS simply because of the action alert! Let your legislator know how our profession feels about pending legislation. Visit the action alert page: https://www.gcsaa.org/ advocacy/take-action/current-action-alerts. We all have challenges facing us daily. My travels as your field staff representative have exposed me to some unique situations, and resilient superintendents. I was told by a superintendent that he informed his staff late August means “grumpy Eric” has arrived. Rightfully so, the most stressful time of the year is coming to a close, but please keep in mind the challenges your staff face as well. Remember, they are an extension of you. If you feel the stress, they will too. Labor Day, shorter days, cooler nights and agronomic practices season are within sight. If you persevere, they will as well! Before moving to Connecticut, I was always aware of one of the most popular and successful PGA tour stops in the country. Connecticut’s PGA tour stop has always been described as exciting, spectator friendly and with course conditions of national notoriety. Connecticut has embraced this event even through the tough times and it is again flourishing as The Travelers Championship. How about the 2017 edition of The Travelers! It is still on most highlight reels during televised golf. It was a fitting finish to a successful week and deserved that dramatic hole out by Jordan Spieth, HISTORIC! I believe that I have attended The Travelers Championship (current name) every year since 1984, as a spectator, for at least an afternoon each year and this year I decided to volunteer to be on the Tournament’s Agronomic Team. I received the volunteer request from CAGCS and decided to jump at the opportunity. I joined many other CAGCS members who have been do¬ing this for some time, it’s great to see our industry has also embraced and supported our tour stop. I signed up for the PM shift which started with a supper (hard work) that was sponsored by many of our Industry friends and once we were fed, the TPC River Highland’s management team communicated the daily news, updates and finally the assignments for the afternoon. I was impressed with how focused, relaxed and professional everyone was on the management team which ultimately translates to the staff performing in the same manner. I was just one of the volunteers who showed up for a few days, there were another 50-60 folks who have been working non stop during the build-up, advance week and finally tournament week. Never mind caring for the turf you also have to avoid the kerfuffle of the support units, TV personnel and the scores of fans when doing your job. Throw in a meteorological event to the storm of activity and through it all, the message from the TPC River Highland team was; enjoy what you are doing, stay on point and the results will be world class. Page 6 I was assigned a different task each day from filling divots, to mowing tees, mowing step cut and I even mowed a few fairways on a couple of the finishing holes. To me this was exciting since I haven’t mowed a fairway in more than 15 years, union rules at Yale explicitly restrict managers from performing any golf course work. Just don’t tell Jeff I am a little rusty as an operator. I am sure he figured it out as he toured around behind us. :) I encourage anyone reading this to consider volunteering. I learned a lot and have adopted several new practices here at The Course at Yale. I would encourage assistants to “be” volunteered by superintendents, there were many assistants from around the country participating. The excitement, networking and knowledge that they bring home is invaluable. There are morning and afternoon shifts available, I encourage all of you to allow your assistants to participate in an exercise of professional development. The folks at TPC River Highlands have a wealth of knowledge, experience and a relaxed approach to presenting world class conditions. I look forward to 2018, come and join us. Just don’t let Jeff know how inexperienced I am as an equipment operator. Have you ever come in early one morning …...before a tournament and then wham!.....areas looked like this…..or…... this? What would you do? Phone a Turf Friend? Get a sample to the diagnostic lab? Jump on the Sprayer? Update your resume? There may be no right or wrong reaction, except you do something! Your players are counting on you for the best conditions. No one has all the answers, nor are all answers out there. This is why at our Turfgrass Schools in New England it is so important to keep the research funded. Be part of helping to fund turfgrass research by donating a round of golf for 4 to Tee-Up New England.
