Volume 52, No 1 March 2018 2017 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD - DONALD BECK I found the following on the FIGC web site and I feel says it all: “Designed by Seth Raynor and opened in 1926, our 18 hole links style golf course is one of the true untouched beauties of the East Coast. Our Golf Course Superintendent, Donald Beck has worked diligently with his staff to keep the course true to Raynor’s original design. The course blends beautifully with the landscape of the east end of the island. Our members believe that the only way to play Fishers is with the wind blowing salty sea air in your face. Golf Digest rated Fishers Island Club #10 of the best courses in the country in 2014. It is a joy to see, play, and work on.” As I mentioned, Donnie is an outstanding family man. Donnie married Marjorie in 2009 and after speaking to Marj, I realized what a special relationship they have. Donnie and Marj have a beautiful six-year-old daughter, Brianna. Donnie is a great Dad and if he is guilty of anything, it is of spoiling his daughter. Just ask Marj about the gym equipment Donnie got for Brianna. He literally bought her a full balance beam and gymnastic parallel bar for his aspiring gymnast. In his spare time Donnie loves and excels at golf and softball and he is excellent at fantasy football – he went undefeated and won the championship of his largest league, just ask Andy Drohen. Donnie is also an avid boater and fisherman. One of his favorite pastimes and maybe the one he excels best at is bowling. Donnie carries a 200 average and has participated in the US Open of Bowling. As a matter of fact, Donnie comes across the sound to Groton every week to participate in his bowling league. He takes his Boston Whaler over no matter the weather or how rough the seas are and he sometimes has to chip the ice away from his boat so he can make bowling during the winter. is This just another example of commitment, which is one of Donnie’s best qualities. When he decides to do something, he does it with his heart and soul! Continued on page 10... In ThIs Issue... He is beginning his 25th season at Fishers Island Golf Club. Donnie grew up on Waterford, CT and worked on the Pequot Golf Course for five years through high school and two years at Three Rivers Community College. He transferred to Grayson College in Sherman, Texas where he graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Golf Course Management. While looking for a job at Shennecossett, then Superintendent Bob Chalifour, CGCS, suggested he speak to Bob Johns on Fishers Island. Donnie did and got the job as a crewmember in 1994, quickly moved up to Assistant Superintendent and upon Bob Johns’ retirement in 2000, Donnie passionately sought the superintendent’s position. It was very apparent that Donnie was the man for the job! Upon taking, the superintendents position, Donnie continued to put his heart and soul into his work and began to make his mark on this special place. March 2018 Connecticut Clippings Page 2 vote for and why. But it was so much more than that. The delegates meeting is a gathering of all chapter representatives to gain information about GCSAA, meet our leadership, network with other association leaders, and celebrate the accomplishments of local chapters. At the fall meeting, the Rounds 4 Research program was highlighted. It raised over $200,000 through the auction — of which CAGCS raised $3,344. CAGCS will again participate in Rounds 4 Research — with 80% of the money raised coming back to the CAGCS BMP Project. You can easily donate up to 3 years of rounds to help support CAGCS’ efforts at www.rounds4research.com. leaders discussed the value of Association attending National Golf Day in Washington D.C. each April and how both they and their associations have benefitted from it. For GCSAA members, National Golf Day kicks off with a group service project at the National Mall, with Michael Stachowicz leading the members and GCSAA staff. The next day, GCSAA sets up meetings for our members to meet their local elected representatives to discuss issues affecting our industry. I heard of the success of the First Green program, where students take field trips to a local course, and the positive effects this has throughout the community. In February, The First Green and GCSAA announced a partnership that will benefit our members to take advantage of this opportunity. On www.gcsaa.org, you can find all the information you would need to host a First Green Field Trip. Finally, stories were shared about the benevolence of GCSAA and local chapters in response to the natural disasters in Florida, Texas, and California. The CAGCS donated $1,000 to the Disaster Relief Fund, and GCSAA was able to raise $150,000 to assist our members with temporary housing, clothing, and food during these incredibly difficult times. In December, we saw record attendance at the CAGCS Holiday Party at J Timothy’s in Plainville — and in January, we fell just short of setting new record attendance for our Winter Seminar at the Mystic Marriott. The CAGCS Winter Seminar had 24 tables full of our members and featured outstanding speakers from all over the country. Presenters from University of Tennessee, North Carolina State, Penn State, and the USGA provided us valuable presentations and an entertaining “Round Table – Q&A.” It was a great day for all who participated. February brought the national GCSAA Golf Industry Show in San Antonio. Here, the Nor’ Easter gathering was another great opportunity to network and have a great time. This event was held at Rio Rio on the Riverwalk, with almost 400 people in attendance. This particular event has always been important to me. The first few times I attended the GIS (pre-cell phones), it was one place I knew I would see some familiar faces. Today, it’s where I can connect with people I already know from around the region and meet in person those I’ve only connected with on social media. This takes us to March for the 21st New England Regional Turfgrass Conference, which offers 3 days of second-to-none education and networking. In fact, the foundation that runs the conference (NERTF) has just recently surpassed $2 million of funding to promote and support turfgrass research in New England. CAGCS, GCSAA, and NERTF provide so many opportunities every month for members to network, learn, or get involved at any level. I am so grateful for the opportunities our associations have given me to develop personally and professionally — and the value, in turn, it brings back to my club. If you have any interest in being a part of CAGCS at the local level, please reach out to me, and we will find you a place to serve on a committee that is meaningful to you. Best, Marc Weston, CGCS President, CAGCS Marc Weston, CGCS I hope this message finds you all well as we look forward to spring! To begin, I’d like to share some thoughts from when I was fortunate to represent CAGCS at the GCSAA chapter delegates meeting in Lawrence, Kansas last fall. I have learned first-hand over the past year that GCSAA is truly a member association. As a first-time delegate to the meeting, I thought it would center around learning about the candidates and figuring out who we should Connecticut Clippings is an official publication of the Connecticut Association of Golf Course Superintendents Newsletter Editor Heather Garvin Newsletter Committee Bob Chalifour, CGCS (ret.) You will find that many of those highlights have a Northeast region spin! Your 2018 GCSAA Board of Directors: Darren J. Davis, the golf course superintendent at Olde Florida Golf Club in Naples, Fla., has been elected to a one-year term as president of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) at the association’s annual meeting Feb. 8, held in conjunction with the Golf Industry Show in San Antonio. Davis, a certified golf course superintendent (CGCS), served as vice president of the association in 2017 and has been a member of the association’s board of directors since 2012. A 28-year member of GCSAA, Davis is a past president of the Everglades GCSA and a past president of the Florida GCSA and Florida Turfgrass Association. He is currently a director with the Musser International Turfgrass Foundation. In 2004, the FGCSA honored him with its Distinguished Service Award, and in 2011 the FTGA presented Davis with the Wreath of Grass - the association’s highest award. Other elected officers were Rafael Barajas, CGCS and director of golf course operations at Boca Grove Plantation in Boca Raton, Fla., as vice president, and John R. Fulling Jr., CGCS and grounds and facilities manager at Kalamazoo (Mich.) Country Club, as secretary/treasurer. Board members Kevin P. Breen, CGCS and golf course superintendent at La Rinconada Country Club in Los Gatos, Calif., and Kevin P. Sunderman, director of grounds at Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club in St. Petersburg, Fla., were elected to serve again. While T.A. Barker, CGCS and superintendent at Fore Lakes Golf Course in Taylorsville, Utah; and Jeff L. White, CGCS and superintendent at Indian Hills Country Club in Prairie Village, Kan., were newly elected to the board. In addition, delegates voted to approve 11 changes to the association’s bylaws. In Other News: The First Green Foundation (First Green) and Golf Course Superintendents Association of American (GCSAA) have signed a memorandum of understanding that will bring First Green under the umbrella of the GCSAA’s philanthropic organization, the Environmental Institute for Golf (EIFG). The agreement was announced at the 2018 Golf Industry Show in San Antonio. First Green, an innovative education outreach program using golf courses as hands-on environmental learning labs, has worked with golf course superintendents extensively for more than 20 years. Superintendents form the backbone of First Green initiatives, hosting STEM-focused field trips for students grades five and up. First Green and GCSAA field staff representatives have collaborated to support golf courses and train superintendents, conducting trips and instruction at GCSAA’s affiliated chapters. field In addition, First Green has held well-received workshops at the Golf Industry Show for several years. Northeast Region Members Recognized: Frank Rossi, Ph.D., associate professor at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and one of the world’s leading experts on turfgrass science, has been selected to receive the 2018 President’s Award for Environmental Stewardship by the board of directors of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). The GCSAA President’s Award for Environmental Stewardship was established in 1991 to recognize “an exceptional environmental contribution to the game of golf; a contribution that further exemplifies the golf course superintendent’s image as a steward of the land.” In 2014, Rossi was instrumental in the development of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for New York State Golf Courses. The project was initiated in 2012 by the Metropolitan Golf Course Superintendents Association, and Rossi served as the lead author of the guidelines. Nearly two decades earlier, while working as a turfgrass environmental specialist at Michigan State University, he was key to the creation of the Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Program, which was officially launched in 1998. Chris Carson, the golf course superintendent at Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield, N.J., has been selected as the recipient of the 2017 Leo Feser Award from the Golf Course Superintendents Since 1966 Customers, Our TOP Priority. The award is presented annually to the author of the best superintendent-written article published in Golf Course Management, the association’s flagship publication, during the previous year. Carson’s selection makes him the first three-time winner of the Leo Feser Award in the 40 years that GCSAA has presented it as an annual honor. Carson previously won in 2000 and 2007. The only other repeat winner of the Feser is Darren Davis, CGCS, from Olde Florida Golf Club in Naples, Fla., who won the award in 1997 and 2002. Carson, a 32-year GCSAA member, authored the story “8 essential budgeting principles for superintendents,” which was published in the October 2016 issue of GCM. The story offered readers time-tested tips on making successful budget requests and communicating with golf facility decisions-makers about how those requests will benefit the facility’s playing surfaces and, ultimately, its bottom line. “I wrote the article on the budgeting principles that have been successful for me over the years — the same principles I teach at Rutgers — as a way of helping my peers grow professionally,” Carson said. “I’ve always enjoyed writing and the business aspects of our jobs, and putting my thoughts and ideas into print is one of the ways I try to give back to our profession. Ben expressed gratitude for the association’s support of his research. He discussed his findings in height of cut and its effects on weevil eggs and larvae study. The afternoon session started off with a government relations update from Scott Ramsay, CGCS and was followed by a very informative talk by Michael Moraghan, Executive Director of the CSGA. Mike discussed the state of Connecticut’s golf and the importance of the strong partnership between our associations especially when considering our government outreach. Mike thanked Peter Gorman for his effort and diligence with the State Water Plan committee and BMP project. Jim Skorulski, USGA regional agronomist addressed the subject of, “BMP’s for Decreased Pesticide Use”, Jim reviewed many of the advantages of implementing Best Management and discussed technology that better enables the process such as GPS sprayer controls. Practices Dr. Frank Wong, Ph.D, Senior Regulatory Affairs Consultant closed out the seminar with an inspired round table session with all of the day’s speakers covering a broad spectrum of subject matter that was very informative and lively. This segment of the day was broadcast live on twitter and is still available for viewing there on the @CAGCS1929 twitter page. Duncan McGowan, the new Education Chair, is actively working to fill the 2019 slate of speakers and it is shaping up to be yet another tremendous success. Please plan to attend.
