CONNECTICUT CONNECTICUT •SSOCIHlOMOF^r' COIF COURSE » 4L SUPEmNTENDENTSaM CLIPPINGS MAY 1984 How Big Is Your Ego? President’s Message Volume 17, Number 2 Are you a job-aholic? Can you see the forest for the trees? Are you in trouble? I’ve been a member of the Connecti cut Association of Golf Course Super intendents for nearly ten years. I must admit that when I joined as an assistant I held many members in awe. People ! ,uch as Harry Meusel of Yale, Fred Bachand of Wethersfield and Charles Baskin of Waterbury, seemed like legends. Time progressed and I became Superintendent at my own course. As with all young Superintendents, I had my share of problems. The point I would like to make is we all have our share of problems from time to time. One of the most effective ways to solve these problems is to be able to go to a neighboring Superintendent and seek his help and expertise. I know this may sound simplistic, but just recognizing you have a problem is often 90 percent of the solution. Don’t let your pride stand in your way. Go and seek help. No job has been saved by a man too proud to admit he has a problem. I can honestly say I’ve never had any Super intendent refuse to help me. How do you start the process? One way is to attend monthly meetings and introduce yourself to fellow Superin- I undents. Get out and meet your fellow members. As established Superintend ents, you should make an effort to meet and welcome the new fellow on the block. Show him he is welcome, and assure him when he seeks help that you Spring is upon us and everyone is busily preparing their courses for play. It seem that there are never enough hours in the day or enough people to complete the hundreds of tasks that face us each spring. A note on the Dick Parsons Tour nament; it will be held on May 22 at the Farmington Woods C.C. I hope to see many of you there to support this occasion. The Board of Directors is actively reviewing the recommendations from the survey sent to each member over the winter. One suggestion was for more luncheon meetings, which we have included on our schedule. Also, interest was shown for a summer picnic. We are reviewing this function as we need more partici pation because previous picnics have been poorly attended. If any member has a problem, suggestion, or recommendation please contact me or a member of the board. With your input we will continue to grow strong and united as an association. David Stimson C.G.C.S. President CAGCS will make a sincere effort to under stand his situation and offer assistance where possible. Remember the solution lies in seeing the problem and then acting. Don’t be too proud to act. As the words of a song once said “He’s not heavy, he’s my brother.” Michael Wallace C.G.C.S. Life Members were guests of our associ ation at our annual March meeting. Les Guedel has been named manager for LESCO’s East Coast region. Guedel, who worked as a LESCO Truck Salesman for four years, first in Ohio and then in New Jersey, is a former golf course superintendent. Before joining LESCO in 1979, Guedel was superin tendent at Union Country Club, New Philadelphia, OH. A native of Dover, OH, Guedel graduated from the Stock- bridge Winter School at the University of Massachusetts and attended Akron (OH) State University. Participating as speakers on the program at Cambridge will be James G. Prusa, CGCS, Associate Executive Director, GCSAA; Stanley J. Zontek, Regional Director, United States Golf Association, USGA Greens Section; Bruce Williams, superintendent, Bob O’Link Golf Course, Highland Park, Hl.; and Dr. James Watson, The Toro Co. All are members of GCSAA. “This is our second trip over to exchange ideas and to develop com munication lines between GCSAA and our colleagues in Great Britain,” Prusa said. “The more we talk, the more we find we have in common, and that we can definitely help each other.” ****** Lawrence, Kan.—A comprehensive, nationwide survey of golf course main tenance activity will be conducted this season as a joint project of the National Golf Foundation and the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. Superintendents of every golf course in the nation will be asked to share information on turfgrass maintenance practices, operating and capital budgets, equipment use and needs, and other matters related to the care and feeding of America’s 12,197 golf facilities. More than $1.5 billion is spent an nually to maintain some 1.5 million acres of turfgrass for 17 million golfers. The survey will result in a major publication, “1984 Golf Course Main tenance Cost Profile.” It will be avail able through GCSAA to its membership and through NGF to the golf industry. The project is the outgrowth of dis cussions between David B. Hueber, president of NGF, and James G. Prusa, Associate Executive Director of GCSAA. It is a pilot program in a long range cooperative arrangement between the two organizations. * * * * * * The Golf Course Superintendents As sociation of America (GCSAA) is mak ing plans to send representatives to cover the U.S. OPEN to be played at the WINGED FOOT Golf Club, Ma maroneck, N.Y., June 14-17. GCSAA reporters will follow the golf course superintendent, Sherwood Moore, and his staff as they prepare and maintain the course for play each day. News releases will be prepared each morning and given to the many sports writers covering the action. The Association’s magazine, GOLF, COURSE MANAGEMENT, will have its June issue devoted almost entirely to the U.S. OPEN. The cover will be a fold-out cover featuring a photo of Winged Foot. The feature article will be on the course itself with other articles on the history of the U.S. OPEN and the golf course superintendent, Sher wood Moore, CGCS. Moore is a mem ber of GCSAA. The fee is only required if you wish to compete for prizes in that day’s event. Feel ‘free’ to just tee it up and enjoy ‘a day in the country’ if you like. This is one way to keep down the cost of attending our meetings. Of course, if you use a golf cart, that fee is separate from the tournament fee and must be paid for in the Golf Shop. * * * * * *t There have been many new members join our association this year. Please make an effort to greet and introduce yourself to these new individuals. I’ve heard it said that attending one of our meetings for the first time and not knowing anyone is like being lost in space. Greg Wojick, Editor Jim Medieros congratulates Pete Dun can (Stephen B. Church Co.) on a fine presentation at our March meeting. Pete s talk was about construction and main tenance of irrigation well systems. Grass Catcher Have you read the 1984 March issue of Golf Course Management? If you haven’t, you missed an excellent article on the GCSAA Golf Tournament held in Phoenix, Arizona. Last year’s cover age of the tourney was poor and many of our members expected better maga zine coverage this year. Mary-Justine Lanyon provided that better coverage, donating her time and expertise to luthor the article entitled—GCSAA’s 1984 Tournaments: Hard fought by a full field. Mary-Justine is the wife of Race Brook Country Club’s GCS Armand LeSage. ****** Golfing Events sponsored by the USGA, PGA and LPGA will allow ad mittance to GCSAA members if a cur rent GCSAA gold membership card is presented. * * * *> * * In the 1983 selection of the top 100 golf courses in the United States by Golf Digest, three Connecticut Courses were listed.
