Volume 52, No 4 December 2018 ConneCtiCut AssoCiAtion of Golf Course superintendents record The first event of the year for CAGCS had setting attendance and was supported by 25 commercial sponsors. I would like to recognize our presenting partner Atlantic Golf and Turf, our three gold sponsors Aquatrols, Tom Irwin, Turf Products Corporation, and all our silver and bronze sponsors. Your continued support is what makes these events great. I would like to thank our speakers Dr. Doug Soldat of UW-Madison who spoke on Soil Testing 2019 JAnuAry seminAr and Iron, the most interesting nutrient in the world, Dr. John Inguagiato of the University of Connecticut with the update of Best Management Practices (BMP), and Tim Moraghan of Aspire Golf Consulting for his tournament preparation. Thanks also go to Scott Ramsey, CGCS The Course at Yale and Michael Lee GCSAA Government Relations for their updates on policy and grassroots advocacy at the state and national level. Michael Moraghan, the executive director of the talk on CSGA, encouraged attendees to nominate a superintendent for the Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame. Lastly, I would like to thank Dr. Frank Wong, Senior Regulatory Affairs Consultant at Bayer U.S. for moderating the round table discussion at the conclusion of the seminar. December 2018 Connecticut Clippings Page 2 Lawrence, Kansas. Walking in the shoes of a delegate with others from across the country, I learned first- hand that GCSAA is truly a member association. As a delegate, I thought I was going to learn about the candidates – who they were and why we should vote for them. But it was so much more than that. This meeting is a gathering of all chapter representatives where we obtain information about GCSAA, meet our leadership, network with other association leaders, and celebrate the accomplishments of the 99 local chapters. Then this February, I walked around San Antonio at the Golf Industry Show (GIS). Here, I had a first in my career – giving a presentation during the Lightening Learning Round about “Networking Differently.” The key message was that while as superintendents, we know we are expected to provide excellent and fun playing conditions – despite the weather and other challenges – there is so much more we can do to add value to our clubs. At the GIS, Steve Curry and I also volunteered to grade essays by university student teams for the GCSAA Turf Bowl. With over 70 teams from around the country participating, this was a great opportunity to give back and be part of supporting these students and crowning the champion. When spring came, the afternoon of Easter Sunday, I was able to take a flight down south with Kevin Collins and Scott Ramsay. As Class A Superintendents, we were able to take advantage of complimentary admission to The Masters. (I encourage all Class A members to explore this opportunity.) We were able to meet up with Rich Duggan and John Parmelee for a three-day, 26.1 mile walk around the grounds of Augusta National Golf Club. Even in three days, I couldn’t complete a marathon, but I did successfully try every item from the legendary Augusta affordable concessions. (It seems like everything cost $2 down there. I wasn’t a fan of the pimento cheese sandwich, but the Georgia peach ice cream sandwiches are life-changing.) Walking around to see the elevation changes of the property, the contours and undulations of the greens, is certainly something that needs to be experienced in person. But if I can share a little advice, don’t walk up the 10th fairway from green to tee at the end of the day. Later in April, Scott Ramsay and I also attended National Golf Day in Washington, D.C., along with over 100 GCSAA members. The event kicks off with a group service project at the National Mall, and my walk was over to right outside the Capitol Building to work on the aerification and seeding team. The next day, meetings were arranged for us on Capitol Hill with of all the elected Representatives and Senators from Connecticut. Scott and I were able to promote the environmental benefits of maintained open space. We shared that golf has a $1.1 billion economic impact to the State, employs 12,000, and raises over $30 million for charity each year. Another memorable walk was in June, when I was able to volunteer at the Travelers Championship hosted by Jeff Reich. One evening, Scott Ramsay and I were tasked with a walk mow double cut of the back-side greens. This was an absolute treat for me, somewhat because earlier in my career I spent five seasons at River Highlands, and even more because it was another chance to take a great walk with a friend. (The opportunity to volunteer at the Travelers Championship is open to all CAGCS members. It is a great way to get involved, network, and gain valuable PGA tournament experience.) So this past year, I have taken walks with Scott Ramsay everywhere from the GIS in Texas and The Masters in Georgia to the halls of our Capitol in Washington, D.C. and the greens for The Travelers Championship. I have also represented CAGCS at Board meetings for First Tee of Connecticut and the Connecticut State Golf Association. I have tried to take advantage of every opportunity that golf and serving our association can offer without “spoiling” the walk. In that spirit, I hope many members of our association will take advantage of these types of opportunities this year. These stories were not intended to simply share my travels with you, but more to show how many ways there are to get involved in committee work, networking events, and volunteering. If you have any interest in or questions about getting the most out of your membership, please reach out to me or any CAGCS Board member. Best wishes for a very happy (and hopefully drier!) 2019, Marc Weston, CGCS President, CAGCS Marc Weston, CGCS Former Connecticut resident Mark Twain once said, “Golf is a good walk spoiled.” It’s hard to believe one year has already passed since I began my term as CAGCS President. During this time, I have tried to take advantage of every opportunity that presented itself to “take a good walk” without hitting a single shot. My first walk in this role was in November 2017, when I represented our association at the GSCAA Chapter Delegates meeting in Connecticut Clippings is an official publication of the Connecticut Association of Golf Course Superintendents Newsletter Editor Heather Garvin Newsletter Committee Bob Chalifour, CGCS (ret.) The chapter board revisited a long- bantered notion that consolidating with some area chapters would be beneficial and wondered if I could help reach out to area chapter leaders for a potential meeting to discuss the matter. Just over two years later, the Western New York GCSA became the first of four chapters to vote to consolidate. The other three chapters (Northeastern GCSA, Central New York GCSA, and Finger Lakes AGCS) will discuss and vote by spring 2019. Lots of hard work was done by more than a dozen members spanning the four chapters. That is a great story in and of itself. The topic I’d rather focus on now isn’t the journey, but the final message they discovered on that journey: increased efficiency and better communication will lead to more value for their members by consolidating. Coming off the historically wet and challenging 2018 season, try and imagine the CAGCS without Mary Jo Kennedy. Your board members trying to manage a facility of their own while conducting chapter business including promoting and executing beneficial events would not have come close to the standards you expect as CAGCS members. Because of that, and every other important task Mary Jo covers in her duties for CAGCS, the value to you as a member would have suffered. Of the four chapters consolidating in New York only one has very little outside assistance as they are nearly exclusively volunteer driven. The consolidation committee considers a paid executive a key for efficiency, and a tremendous value for members. Communication is another key uncovered by the consolidation committee. A newsletter the Clippings only exists for one of the four chapters and social media is underutilized by most. Having dedicated members to spearhead communications initiatives with a chapter executive running point is tremendously valuable. Do you read the Clippings? I hope so, because no matter how engaged you are, your member editors work very hard to add value to your membership through this newsletter. While calling the like green book a communication tool might be a stretch, should you wish to reach out to any of your fellow CAGCS members, that directory offers several means to do so. Communications at the chapter level is a huge driver of value. Delivering additional value is an end goal of the consolidation initiative in New York. Even if they successfully fulfill the efficiency and communication goals above, the challenge still remains in engaging the membership. Even though your chapter fulfills the items above, they must attempt to engage members too. What piece are you playing in the success of the CAGCS? The value proposition turns both ways. The more you put into your local chapter, the more you will get out of it. Serve on a committee, write for the Clippings, volunteer at an event, consider serving on the board. Take the initiative and you will get more value out of your CAGCS membership than you ever thought possible. On the wall at GCSAA headquarters you will find a quote from founder Colonel John Morley, who firmly believed, “No life is, or can be, self-existent. We depend OUR PASSION IS YOUR SUCCESS With Tom Irwin, you’re not alone Harris Schnare | 800-582-5959 | harris@tomirwin.com December 2018 Connecticut Clippings Page 5 on each other”. In New York, just as in Connecticut, it must be the members who make the chapter and those within it successful, not the chapter who drives the success of the membership. The championships continue to be highly competitive and this year was no different! The MetGCSA, led by the low gross team of Steve Rabideau and Sean Cain narrowly defeated the defending champions from Connecticut by 2 strokes! Jason Harrison, Director of Golf and Grounds at Hamilton Farm Golf Club hosted this year’s championship and despite non-stop rain all year long had the golf course in fantastic shape! Jason and his team had the greens smooth and slick which proved to be challenging to many competitors this year! Hamilton Farm, one of the premier courses in New Jersey was designed by famed environmental architects Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry and was sculpted into the rolling terrain of central NJ just 50 miles outside of New York city. Hamilton Farm has some beautiful vistas and architecturally stunning looks shaped by the bunkering of Fry. The 6th hole was recently selected by Golf Digest as part of the best 18 holes around the New York area! Rabideau and Cain teamed with Steve Loughran and Tom Ashfield on the gross side and Steve McGlone, Dave Conrad, Josh Haugh and Blake Halderman on the Net side. All 4 groups provided solid performances for the METGCSA, breaking 80 in every pairing with McGlone and Conrad shooting 2 under on the Net side. Year after year, the Met Area Team Championship was made possible by our 7 major sponsors who continue to step up to make this one of the best events across North America! Please join me in thanking BASF, Bayer, The Care of Trees, Koch Turf & Ornamental, Ocean Organics, Syngenta and Toro as they continue to support this wonderful event. The Met Area Team Championship continues to raise money each year to help those in our industry going through difficult times. Over the past 8 years superintendents, we have raised over $10,000 and have supported industry representatives and their families in times of need. Last year we donated $1,500 to the South Texas GCSA to help families affected by Hurricane Harvey. Thank you to all that support these efforts with the 50/50 raffles! If you know of anyone in need please let us know. Thanks again to all our sponsors, Jason Harrison and his entire staff and all the folks at Hamilton Farm GC for another successful championship! A special thank you to or local GCSAA representative Kevin Doyle for help with registration and Shaun Barry for the great photos as usual! When things first began, we thought a 4-day program was just what the industry was excited for and it was. 15 years later though, communications suggested we could service the industry better by shortening our show schedule. So, this is what we did. In 2016, we decided to compress the schedule by starting at 1pm on Monday, and then end a little earlier on Thursday, which we hoped would make it easier for individuals to come on Monday afternoon and stay till Thursday. This was met favorably but it wasn’t long before we heard some of the same concerns and that we should have gone further. Education has always been of the highest priority and what we believe separates us from other shows. A balanced in- depth education program, adequate trade show hours and enjoyable social activities has always been our MO. As we listened to comments and concerns, just three years later, we are informing everyone that it is time to go a little further and do a little more refining of our conference and show schedule. Below are the highlights of changes to our 2019 show schedule (March 5-7, 2019): • First, there will be no show activities on Monday, March 4….. Please don’t show up on Monday! In 2019, all 2 & 4 hr. seminars will be held on Tuesday, March 5 starting at 8am and ending at 5pm. There are no other planned education sessions scheduled on Tuesday. Exhibitor Move-In will begin early Tuesday Morning. Exhibitors will be informed as usual. Staggered Education Sessions will begin at 8am and 9am on Wednesday for Golf, Sports Turf and Equipment Techs, and again beginning at 1pm. The 2019 trade show will open at 10am on Wednesday, March 6 and will close at 5pm. The show auction will begin at 4pm and end at 5pm on Wednesday, with the reception to follow. Thursday’s Education Sessions will begin at 8am for Golf, Sports/Grounds, Lawn Care/ Landscape and Equipment Techs. There will be a 2-hour Sports Turf Seminar on Thursday Morning (9-11am) The Thursday Trade Show will open at 9am and will close at 2pm There will be 2nd set of education sessions on Thursday starting at 2pm in the afternoon. The show will host an appreciation lunch Thursday on the show floor for all attendees and exhibitors.
