The art and business of managing golf maintenance operations in times of financial and resource constrictions will require change in attitudes and the development of new skills on the part of the superintendent if he and golf are to survive the 80’s and 90’s. With this in mind, the 1982 Conference in New Orleans, Jan. 30 Feb. 5, has been planned with the goal of addressing the problem of the future and discussing how those problems might be solved. It is worth every effort to attend! Do not hesitate to make club officials aware of the positive learning experience that can be gained by attending this national conference. * * * * * The official slate of candidates for GCSAA office is as follows: President............. James A. Wyllie, CGCS Vice-Pres.......Robert W. Osterman, CGCS James W. Timmerman, CGCS Director.....................Paul Boizelle, CGCS William J. Emerson John P. Hayden, CGCS James E. Lindlbad, CGCS Richard Slivinski, CGCS * * * * * GOLF COURSE MANAGEMENT will be expanded from ten yearly issues to twelve issues beginning in 1982. The publishing of the magazine on a monthly basis will allow GCSAA to better serve the membership, its readers, and will attract a larger portion of the advertising dollar. * * * * * CERTIFICATION TESTING AT CONFERENCE The certification examination is scheduled for Sunday, January 31, 1982 during con ference week. To be eligible to apply for certification, one must be currently em ployed as a Golf Course Superintendent and have been a Class A member of GCSAA for at least two years. However, we have deter mined that if your two-year period is com pleted by February 28, 1982, you will be eligible to take the certification examination during conference week. Qualified candi dates should contact Bonnie Stephenson, Educational Department, at GCSAA head quarters before December 31, 1981, to arrange for testing at the 1982 conference. Steve Cadenelli 3 Scholarship and Research Tournam ent Raises $ 1,200 On October 6, 86 brave golfers fought and clawed their way around the Edgewood Golf Club in Cromwell. The weatherman did not shine —he did rain, but everyone who played proved that our Scholarship and Research Fund was the real winner. The Connecticut section of the PGA was represented by Don Ross, Don Glihia, Richard Crowe and Drew Pierson. A hearty thanks goes to these Pros. A special thanks goes to our Associates who played and/or purchased advertising space on the tees. These include: Fran Downey, A1 Arison and Bill Somers, the Magovem Co., the Hart Seed Co., Tom Irwin Co., I & E Supply and Old Fox Chemical Co., and the T.P.C. Scholarship and Research would also like to thank Steve and Linda Cadenelli and Bob Osterman for their support. A fine steak dinner was enjoyed by all at the end of a special day for the Connecticut Association of Golf Course Superintendents, Scholarship and Research Fund. Peter Pierson HELP WANTED Meet Your Class “ C” Members The newly elected associate director of our association and this month’s featured class “C” member is John Ferry, sales manager of Turf Products Corp. in South Windsor. Even before John received his associ ate’s degree from the UMASS Turf School, he had been appointed Superintendent of the Ellington Ridge Country Club in Ellington, Connecticut. After five years at Ellington, John decided to try his hand at sales and accepted a sales representative position at Turf Products Corp. Now, as sales manager at TPC, John says he rarely misses his Superintendent days. In his spare time, John enjoys skiing and golfing. John and his wife Melinda have two daughters: Emily, who is 2% years old, and Betsy, who is 8 months old. Grass Catcher Jim Medeiros is looking for clubs at which to hold the monthly CAGCS meetings for next year. If you and your club are willing to participate, give Jim a call to set up a convenient date. * * * * * Paul Christ, former CAGCS member and Superintendent of Pequot Golf Club, was seriously injured in an August motorcycletruck accident.
