CONNECTICUT CONNECTICUT ASSOCIATION O F ^ ^ COIF COURSC » S UP F8 1NU NPÌNTS — — CLIPPINGS D E C E M B E R 1983 Volume 16, Number 6 The 1983 C A G C S Superintendent of the Year is — (envelope please) — FR E D B A C H A N D Fred Bachand, Wethersfield Country Club’s golf course Superintendent, was voted by his peers as the 1983 Superintendent of the Year in the Connecticut Association of Golf Course Superintendents. He received the award in Novem ber at the association’s annual meeting held at the Watertown Country Club. The criteria for this prestigious annual award, given for the first time this year, is based on the individual’s length of mem bership in CAG C S (minimum of 5 years), knowledge and understanding of turfgrass and related sciences, understanding of the game of golf, contributions to local and allied associations and excellence in golf course conditioning. There is no question that Fred Bachand meets all o f this criteria — and then some. Over the years in his characteristically quiet and modest manner, Fred’s quality work at Wethersfield has become the standard that rival Superintendents strive to emulate. Since 1969 when Fred took over as the Superintendent at W ethersfield he has kept the members at W ethersfield proud of their golf course. And in August of each summer (that God-awful month for all Superintendents) he has met the challenge of grooming the W ethersfield golf course to the demanding standards that P G A profes sionals have come to expect on the tour. 1983 was the last year of the WethersfieldGHO combination as next year the site m oves to the E d g ew o o d G o lf Club in Cromwell, Connecticut. It is certainly fit ting that Fred culminate his association with the GHO by accepting this award. Fred Bachand poses with the Hitchcock chair that was presented to him for being voted as the 1983 C AGCS Superintendent of the Year. The P G A tour has also recognized Fred’s abilities as he recently was named recipient of the third G C S A A -PG A Tour Citation o f Performance award. This award which is presented annually, honors the superin tendent who has made a significant con tribution to his association with a PG ATour tournament. That translates into the best-maintained golf course on the PG ATour — quite an honor! Fred came to W ethersfield in 1965 to work as an assistant to William Dest and was appointed Superintendent in 1969. A resident of Marlborough, Connecticut, he and his wife, Susan, have two children. Fred is a past secretary of CAGCS. Fred received his associates degree in turf management in 1965 at the University of Massachusetts. He started in his profes sion at the N ew London Country Club, New London, Connecticut, as part of his college program. Anyone who knows or has been associ ated with Fred Bachand knows him as a low-key, hard-working and modest individ ual. In keeping with his character he is quick to diffuse the attention he has received. Fred credits his assistant, Herb Watson, and his crew for much of his success at Wethersfield. And if you were to pin Fred down on which award means the most to him — it would probably be the plaque that was given to him after the final GHO at Wethersfield. It was presented to him by his crew — for being a good boss. Fred deserves it all. Congratulations to Fred Bachand — the 1983 CAGCS Super intendent of the Year. P.G.A. hosts to Supts. and Officers The following is a reprint from the Edgewood Club News (September 1938). Thanks to Peter Pierson for sending it along to Connecticut Clippings. In the first event of its kind, with the Pros in charge, 75 golfers, including greens keepers, now known as g olf superintendents, club greens commit tee chairmen, put in a busy and en joyable day and evening here on August 15. In the golf tournament with a Pro, a course Superintendent and a club o f ficer playing together from each club, the honors went to the trio represent ing the Norwich club with tie for second place between the New Haven Country Club and Tumblebrook. There were several ties for the special prizes. The low scoring honors for the day were also shared, Willie Whalen and Jack Williams, each having a 73. T h e dinner in the evening was unquestionably a success, the house staff outdoing themselves to show what they could do for the men who direct the outdoor activities of a club. Joel Smith, president of the Connecticut PG A presided; Ernie Doering distributed the prizes. The State Press was well represented by its sporting editors. A number of guests spoke briefly and had much praise for the Edgewood course. The Edgewood speakers were Harry Emmette, Joe Whitehead, and Ray Coe, who spoke for our club in the absence of President George. It is a distinction to have Edgewood hold this initial affair. Pro Ernie and Superin tendent Joe are to be congratulated upon the manner in which the affair was conducted. Winter Seminar to be Held Wednesday, January 4 An outstanding array of speakers high lighted by Dr. Paul Rieke of Michigan State University will be on hand to address those attending C A G C S ’ s annual Winter Seminar. The 1984 pro gram will mark the fifth year that the Winter Seminar has been in existence. Since its inception, the program has broadened its scope especially in terms of attempting to provide Connecticut Superintendents with viewpoints o f individual speakers from other parts of the country. Make plans to attend this affordable and useful seminar program and don’t forget to bring along key staff members. Such a program presents an excellent opportunity for educating crew members. G C S A A Highlights Pre-registration for G C S A A ’s yearly Conference and Show has never been better according to those in the know at G C SAA headquarters. The draw of Las Vegas, an excellent array of educa tional opportunities, and of course, the opportunity to see Bob Hope at the annual Banquet and Show are all factors in the tremendous interest being shown toward the ’84 conference. Those in terested in the Annual Golf Tourna ment are sure to be pleased as well, with the fine weather, excellent hospi tality, and superb facilities to be offered in Phoenix. Deadlines for registration are fast approaching so don’t hesitate in getting necessary paper work in the mail. Steve Cadenelli The Following Companies Are Contributing To The Support O f The Conn.
