CONNECTICUT vj CONNE CTI CUT ASSOCIATION O F ^ ' C O IF COURSE » S U P E R IN T E N D E N T S « ^ c l ip p in g s Volume 16, Number 5 OCTOBER 1983 Golfs ‘‘Old Tom Morris Award” Goes to Bob Hope Bob Hope has been selected to receive the Old Tom Morris Award from the Golf Course Superinten dents Association of America. The award is one of the most exclusive major honors in the world of golf. Selection of award winners is made on an unscheduled periodic basis, and Hope will be only the second recipient. The first was Arnold Palmer. In announcing the selection of Hope, GCSAA President Robert W. Osterman also outlined the background of the award: “This Association established the Old Tom Morris Award to satisfy the need for a significant international honor that would help identify with the true heritage and traditional founding of the game. ‘Old Tom’ Morris—the first ‘superstar’ of golf—was a greenkeeper, golf professional, club and ball maker, golf course architect and ac complished player who won four British Open Championships between 1861 and 1867.” In response to notification that he had been chosen to receive the award, Hope recalled that back in 1939 he had personally shot movies of Old Tom’s headstone at St. Andrew’s Cemetery (Scotland). “I’ve never seen a headstone with a fellow in a golf pose before,” Hope said, “but it sure pleases a lot of us.” If anyone has helped to immortalize the golf swing, it’s surely Bob Hope. He has swung a golf club on more stages than most people have on golf courses. His swing has taken him literally around the world— many, many times. (cont. on page 3) President’s Message The Connecticut Association of Superintendents has taken in many new members in the past few years. Due to this fact, I feel a small re minder may be in order as to what is expected of every member at our monthly meetings. If a member plays golf on a course, he must pay for the evening meal. This is only proper since the hosting club has been kind enough to let us use their fine facility for the day. It is also required that a tie and jacket be worn for dinner unless specifically stated otherwise in the meeting notice. Starting with our next monthly meeting, any individual who plays golf will be expected to purchase a dinner ticket or be billed for the cost of the dinner. This is only fair to the hosting club and superintendent who must try and plan an enjoyable eve ning for all of us. It is the goal of this association to provide interesting and educational meetings. It is also our goal to uplift the position of all superintendents in the golf industry. This can only be done if all of us work together. It only takes one or two loud and unruly members to ruin a meeting and lower our group’s professional image in a hosting club’s eyes. Let us work together for we all have a lot to gain from a more professional image. Sincerely, Michael Wallace Schilling Appointed New GCSAA Executive Director President Robert W. Osterman, CGCS, recently announced that John M. Schill ing has been promoted to the position of Executive Director of GCSAA effective Sep tember 7, 1983. Schilling, who was promoted to the posi tion of Associate Executive Director last May, has been employed at GCSAA since 1978. He replaces James E. McLoughlin whose resignation was accepted earlier in the year. The decision on Schilling’s ap pointment as Executive Director was made last week in New York City at a specially called meeting of GCSAA’s Executive Committee. In announcing the Board’s decision, Os terman said the selection of Schilling was unanimous and was based “on John Schil ling’s proven ability and initiative to direct, lead and manage people and resources to accomplish specific goals and objectives.” Osterman pointed out that since Schilling had joined GCSAA, he had been involved in almost every aspect of the business and operational affairs of the Association. “He has served as Director of Com munications and Editor of GOLF COURSE MANAGEMENT and manager of Informa tional Services; as Director of Marketing and Sales; as Director of Conference and Show; and most recently as Associate Ex ecutive Director. “Prior to leaving the Association for a short time in 1982, the Executive Com mittee had approved a management recom mendation that he be promoted to Assistant (cont. on page 2) Connecticut Association Of Golf Course Superintendents 2 President Michael Wallace, CGCS Rockledge Country Club Office 203-233-3594 Home 203-673-4608 Vice President Peter Pierson Edgewood Golf Course Office 203-635-2211 Home 203-635-5413 Sec.-Treasurer David Simson, CGCS Tumblebrook C.C. Each time the Association has asked him to take on new and increased management responsi bilities, John has successfully responded. His broad-based association management, marketing business experience and formal education are the qualifications GCSAA needs for its Executive Director position,” Osterman said. In addition to completing course work on a Master’s degree in business administra tion at the University of Kansas, Schilling has continuously added to his professional development with educational pursuits in the areas of negotiations, marketing, sales, organizational management, association management, advertising, magazine pub lishing and conference and show manage ment. He graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Journalism in cluding an emphasis on advertising and minors in the areas of economics, psy chology and English. Cadenelli, CGCS Chairman (cont. from page 1) Selection of Hope as the second recipient of the Old Tom Morris Award was entirely in keeping with the intent of the award, according to GCSAA President Osterman: “Besides being a ‘superstar’ in his own time, much like ‘Old Tom,’ Bob Hope has displayed a continuing, selfless commit ment to golf and further the welfare of the game in a manner similar to that of ‘Old Tom.’ Bob Hope’s promotion of the game around the world—and the continuing popularity of his own Bob Hope Desert Classic—provide highly visible evidence of his commitment to the game and its con tinued welfare.” More than a thousand highly prestigious awards and citations have been presented to Hope. The presentation of the Old Tom Morris Award completes the “Grand Slam” of golf awards which includes his previously collected honors of the USGA’s Bobby Jones Award in 1978 (jointly with Bing Crosby), the Golf Writers Richardson Award in 1953 and his recent induction into the Golf Hall of Fame at Pinehurst. Hope is scheduled to receive the award during GCSAA’s 55th International Turfgrass Conference and Show to be held in Las Vegas, Nev., Jan. 29-Feb. 4,1984. The presentation will be made at GCSAA’s annual banquet the evening of Feb. 3 at the MGM Grand Hotel. September 5, 1983 Dear Mike: The informational surveys have been compiled (by county) and are now in the final stages of printing and will soon be available to those who sent in their com pleted survey. Peter Pierson reported that the annual Metropolitan area Team Championship held at Grossinger’s Golf Resort in New York went well. Despite the “lousy” weather conditions, Peter says that the course was in immaculate condition. First place honors went to the team representing the New Jersey GCSA with the Philadelphia GCSA team coming in second. The Connecticut team consisting of Peter Pierson, Armand LeSage, David Roule, Barry Petrasko, Peter Bly and Frank Lamphier finished third, only one stroke back. He * * * * * * Please convey my thanks to the Board and members of the Connecticut Associ ation of Golf Course Superintendents for the beautiful plaque commemorating my association with the GHO these past fourteen years. To me the plaque represents a sense of sharing concern by the members of the Association for successful tournaments year after year, as many have expressed their thoughts of best wishes and concern during severe weather conditions. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the Magovern Co. and Turf Products for the time spent acquiring and hauling equip ment to us year after year. If the equipment was available to them, it was available to us, to use as we wished. Again, thank you for your thoughtfulness and your support Sincerely, Fred Bachand $50 savings bonds have been given to the new arrivals in the CAGCS families of Mike and Jamie Reeb, Mark and Nannette Loper, and Fran and Rodgers. Greg Wojick, Editor He * * * * * * )______________________ Home (____)______________________ * * ** ** * We played some truly great golf courses this year at our CAGCS meetings. The clubs were: Blackhall Club, Suffield Country Club, Hartford Golf Club, Silver Spring Country Club, Tumble Brook Country Club, Washington Golf Club, Madison Country Club, Edge wood Country Club, Pine Or chard Yacht & Country Club and the Watertown Country Club (annual meeting). Thanks to the superintendents and their staffs at these clubs for helping to make our year successful. Jim Medieros and his education com mittee have narrowed down their speaker topics for the upcoming CAGCS winter seminar. The topics will probably include White grub update (Pat Vittum), Topdres sing, Time management, maintaining shrubs and ornamentals (Fred Nelson), stress management and thatch control. Make plans now to attend this very promising seminar. S & R Tourney At Edgewood is Huge Success For the first time in the history of the annual CAGCS scholarship and research tourna ment there was a full field of 144 golfers participating. In fact the tournament was so popular this year that teams had to be turned away. This is certainly a credit to host superintendent and co-owner of Edgewood, Peter Pierson, who along with the staff at Edgewood ran a first-class event. This year’s tourney netted over $1,900 for the CAGCS S & R fund. That total is nearly $700 over last year’s take. Thanks to everyone at Edgewood and good luck with the GHO next year. The S & R tournament winners were: Washington G.C. - 54 Willimantic C.C. - 58 Skungamaug G.C. - 59 Hosking & Co. - 60 C.C. of Farmington - 61 Edgewood G.C. - 61 Watertown C.C. - 62 New London C.C. - 63 Suffield C.C. - 63 Special thanks to the following companies who donated to the S & R fund: Golf Car Rental Hart Seed I & E Supply Turf Products Corp. A park ing lot overflowing—people waiting at the entrance—a fast depleting cheese table and a very busy bar. Over 300 people gathered to honor and thank an individual for giving twenty-five years of his life to his profession and a golf club. Friends, family, club members and peers all joined in to honor Bob Viera at the celebration of his Silver Anniversary as Golf Course Super intendent at the Watertown Golf Club. Expressions of appreciation and congratu lations flowed generously. Kind words from past and present officers of the Club, some stimulating and well delivered words from CAGCS’s own Mike Wallace and Bob Osterman’s unique blend of humor and seriousness told the story of the man everyone had come to honor. Most fitting was the slide show put to music of Bob’s life and career. Everyone in his own profession would be proud to be so honored but, then, there are few as dedicated and distinguished as Bob Viera. Congratulations, again Bob and, thanks; thanks for being “that special guy.” 5 Bob & Betty Viera flanked by Bob Osterman (left) & Mike Wallace (right) Future Happenings November 15,1983 CAGCS Annual Meeting Watertown Golf Club Bob Viera, Host Superintendent Bob accepting a memento or two December 5-8, 1983 New Jersey Turfgrass Expo Resorts International Atlantic City, NJ January 10, 1984 CAGCS Winter Seminar Holiday Inn Plainville, CT January 28-February 3, 1984 GCSAA 55th International Turfgrass Conference & Show Las Vegas, Nevada February 28, 29-March 1, 1984 UMASS Turf Conference & Show Springfield, MA And those who came to help in the celebration The Following Companies Are Contributing To The Support Of The Conn.
