For that I thank you all. Jud W. Sm ith, President I find it hard to believe that another year has passed and my tenure as President of CAGCS is over. It has been both an honor and privilege to serve this association over the past two years. I never imagined some twelve years ago when I was appointed as the Social & Welfare Chair person that I would end up here. It has truly been a meaningful and incredibly Connecticut Clippings is an official publication of the Connecticut Association of Golf Course Superintendents P.O. Please send your comments to: Bob Chalifour, Newsletter Editor It is a pleasure to report that CAGCS is on solid financial ground with an ever-growing membership. This association represented nationally on GCSAA Board of Directors and regionally on the Boards of Tri-State Research Foundation, the New England Regional Turfgrass foundation, the Environmental Industry Council, the CSGA; and UCONN's school of Agriculture. This is all due to the dedication and hard work of our members who offer their time and energy for the betterment of others. In addition and in recognition of their years of service in their respected areas, I along with our Board have nominated lifetime member Mr. Frank Lamphier for GCSAA's Di stinguished Service Award. And Mr. Peter Pierson for GCSAA's Excellence in Gov ernment Relations Award. Their resumes speak for them selves, and they are exceptional examples of volunteers who have dedicated their time for the benefit of our association and GCSAA. We wish them both the best. I would like to thank our Executive Secretary, Ms. Mary Jo Kennedy, through her dedication, hard work and professionalism our as sociation runs as smoothly as it does. Mary Jo I personally can't thank you enough for all your help over the years. You assumed the role of Executive Secretary two short years ago and haven't missed a beat. Thank you. As President I have served with a dedicated and hard working group of people, whom have all donated their time with one goal in mind, to work towards the constant betterment of CAGCS and the professional advancement of its members. It has been a sheer pleasure to work with such a quality group of people, whom I now look upon as friends. As I had noted in a Presidents message success of any organization is directly related to the quality of the draft or more concisely whom one surrounds himself with, I was truly blessed to have each and every one of you "at the same table" so to speak. You have all made this role as President almost effortless. Finally I would like to thank all those who served on various committees, hosted meetings and two-man matches. Without your help and support CAGCS wouldn't be what it is today. It has been an honor to have served on this Board and it's been a pleasure serving this Association. A pesti cide used on the golf course was discharged from a spray tank onto an uncontained concrete wash pad that drained into a nearby creek. Contamination of the waterway resulted in the deaths of an estimated 10,000 fish and numerous waterfowl. Could this happen on your golf course? Do you have a di lapidated turf care facility and pesticide storage and contain ment areas that do not conform to environmental regulations? According to the legal brief in the these aforementioned case: "The evidence shows that a draft environmental policy and a master plan for the golf course were essentially not acted upon. Furthermore, the President has given evidence that the board had in recent years focused on other matters in the belief that they had no responsibility in respect of en vironmental matters and that So ultimately who was respon sible? The Club was ordered to pay approximately $600,000 in fines, court fees, and costs of cleanup as well as installa tion of proper pesticide storage and handling facilities. AW M^ktl^KkJk The Environmental Institute for Golf GCSAA's Charitable Arm Makes a New Name for Itself • • • • • • • • • • • • • • by Tim O'Neill CGCS This past winter GCSAA announced a new direction and name for The GCSAA Foundation, the " charitable" division of GCSAA. The Foundation is now known as The Environmental Institute for Golf, which will concentrate on addressing environmental issues surrounding the game of golf. Its new mission is to "strengthen the compatibility of the game of golf with our natural environment." These changes came as a result of a year-and-half study that analyzed the needs of golf and the strategic focus of The Foundation. Through interviews conducted by the independent consultants First Counsel, Inc., respondents indicated that GCSAA's development efforts should be directed toward the subject of the environment and that the organization assigned that task should be easily identifiable with that cause. The repositioning and renaming of GCSAA's charitable arm has historical precedence. Originally established as the GCSAA Scholarship and Research Fund in 1955, it became known as The GCSAA Foundation in 1995 when education and historical preservation initiatives were added to its mission. Along with the name and strategy change came word that professional golfer and businessman Greg Norman had agreed to participate in and support our environmental initiatives through The Institute. He has committed to serving five years on The Institute's Board of Trustees and will also lead the newly formed Advisory Council. He will assist the Trustees with fundraising and provide input regarding the strategic direction of The Institute. Says Norman of his commitment to The Institute's cause: "There may be no issue more important to golf than its relationship with the environment. I am excited to be involved with The Backed by over 58 years o f experience, LBG has a proven track record on golf course projects which include irrigation and potable water-supply development, water diversion and environmental permitting, construction and site engineering. Environmental Institute for Golf because it has the opportunity to have a profound, positive influence on the game and business of golf. I was flattered and humbled to be approached by The Foundation, and I am committed to doing all that I can to make The Institute even more successful." As part of his commitment to The Institute, Norman has pledged the single largest donation ever made to the organization. For the many who have contributed and been donors to the former GCSAA Foundation, you can rest assured that all current programs will continue to be managed as they have been in the past. Eventually, these programs will be integrated into the new structure of The Institute as it continues to grow and develop. Donors should feel confident that the monies contributed to The Foundation will continue to fund high-quality programs and services that members have come to expect from GCSAA. Audubon International, National Arbor Day Foundation, Center for Resource Management, Committed to Green Foundation, Evergreen Foundation, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and the Environmental Protection Agency were all represented. Golf organizations included the PGA of America, LPGA, PGA TOUR, Canadian GCSA, Golf Course Builders Association, Florida GCSA, Club Managers Association, Irrigation Association, USGA, and more. Former Old Tom Morris Award winner, Jaime Ortiz-Patino from the Valderrama Golf Course in Spain was also in attendance. MetGCSA member and recognized "environmental champion" Ted Horton represented the Golf Course Owners Association of California. Other executives representing the golf industry were from Toro, Hunter, John Deere, Bayer, and Syngenta. The group came together to identify and discuss the prime areas of focus for The Institute. Specifically, the group worked to: • Identify the broad issues that link the environment with golf • Determine how to best frame and address environmental issues surrounding golf • Develop a set of action steps • Develop an ongoing method of communication and interaction with this group, as well as broad groups of stakeholders • Define the collaborative process, and prioritize the next logical steps for The Institute GOLFCOURSESRELYON P age 11 Assessing the Session In my opinion, the meeting was a success. It brought together representatives from a variety of groups, both inside and outside the world of golf. The top areas of focus identified by the participants included: • The need for collaboration among environmental and golf organizations • Building off research and environmental initiatives begun by GCSAA and other groups • Meeting head-on the water issues that will challenge the ability for golf courses to coexist harmoniously with the environment During this time of transition, communication will be a priority. We plan to keep everyone informed through a variety of GCSAA publications, as well as the association website. Tim O'Neill, serving on the GCSAA Board of Directors as secretaryI treasurer, is superintendent at Country Club of Darien, CT.
