W Su p e r i n t e n d e n t Connecticut's M ost Eligible Bachelor First I would like to thank the association for the privilege of presenting the Superintendent of the Year aw ard. This is our associations m ost prestigious and coveted aw ard because it is voted on by the recipient's peers. This aw ard is based on a Q ass A or Life Member of our association who has shown exem plary skills in managing and m aintaining a golf facility and has devoted his or her tim e and effort to help benefit fellow superintendents at both the local and national level. Year m This year's recipient Jud Smith got his start in the golf business in 1975 w orking as a member of a greens m aintenance staff at a Connecticut golf course. Jud continued working on the maintenance staff while attending the Hopkins School in New H aven. After graduating in 1978 he w ent on to college at the University of Richmond where he received a B.S. Degree in Business. executive compensation work. After realizing that city life w as not really for him, he took a com puter sales position with a firm in M anchester, New Hampshire where he also began coaching youth football. Having completed file sales training program , he was offered a territory in sunny southern California and off he went. After some time on the road he realized that this lifestyle w as not for him. He then took an inside sales position with BMW in California. H ow ever this first career choice w as not golf m aintenance. After graduating college Jud took a position with a m anagement con sulting firm in New York City doing Three years later our recipient received a call from his Dad, W alter Smith to assist in running the family business. Connecticut Clippings Page 2 The P re s id e d Mess«ge It's January 29 of the New Year and after much procrastination I'm attempting to get my first "President's Message out for the March issue of the "Connecticut Clippings". All the past presidents know what I'm going through. Actually, some timely chastising by Clippings General Bob Chalifour was all the incentive that I apparently needed. Please send your comments to: Bob Chalifour, Newsletter Editor 39 First Street Groton, CT 06340 Like every January, it's cold, dull and uneventful. So, I've instituted some personal regime changes to fight of the complacency. First, I motivated myself to do most of the reel grinding (manually) at the shop and secondly, I rejoined my local health spa with the hopes of physically inspiring myself out of those w inter's doldrums. So far the only positive results I see are that m y grinding capabilities have not dwindled. Thanks Les! Okay enough....A status update as to the health of CAGCS is in order. Two new colleagues have joined the CAGCS board; namely John Garcia of the "Paterson Club" and Mark Mansur of "Richter Park". An injection of new insights and perspective from both John and Mark will have a refreshing im pact both now and in the future for CAGCS. I would like to thank John Ruzsbatsky, CGCS (past edu cation chairman) for con stantly raising the bar on both education opportunities and monthly golf venues. Membership is strong and continuously getting stronger and participation in both sponsored educational for ums, seminars and golf out-ings are at an all time high. The 2004 schedule for golf meetings is pretty much set (see corresponding insert). As always, all you new members please take the initiative to volunteer your facilities for future golf m u outings, the rew ards, acclaim and gratification are immeasurable. Finally, under the direction of Dr. Carl Guillard, Steve Rackliffe, and et al. UCONN turf program is rapidly gaining status both in New England and nationally. Their commitment in hiring a turf pathologist and a soil scientist is indicative of the positive strides this program will eventually attain. As a result, CAGCS in conjunction with CSGA will initiate and develop a pro-active liaison with the UCONN turf program. Our goal is to help subsidies the turf school to specifically designed requests made by them. These requests would range from product and equipment needs, scholarships, travel and housing to local and national conferences, etc. We are also hopeful that some of the Tri-State research funds will eventually find its' w ay to the UCONN research projects. This initiative is still in the development stage but with some time and a coordinated effort by all parties involved I believe we can eventually attain a result that will make all of us proud. Finally, thanks to all board members both seasoned and not for making CAGCS a productive force. Also, thanks M ary Jo for making m y transition so easy...you are the true heroine of CAGCS. Sincerely, W ayno Page 3 Connecticut Clippings March, 2004 continued... our recipient returned to coaching Youth Football in Branford and eventually ended up on the coaching staff at the U niversity of New H aven as a part-tim e assistant to the then head coach M ark W hipple. of 1992. Shortly there after he joined the Board of D irectors of CAGCS, and served in various positions until he eventually became president in 2002-2003. He has been known to enjoy snowmobiling, rolling a few dice at the local casino, and fishing (which earned him the nickname "Fish" from a friend in California). It w ill establish itself on greens under proper environmental conditions such as increased moisture levels combined with shade. If the algae spores are not killed, the problem can never be effectively controlled. Many golf courses are creating their own algae problems by watering greens with pond, lake or canal water that contains algae*. Under these circumstances no chemical treatment w ill ever allow you to fully control the problem. For algae control using ZeroTol Professional Turf Care, follow the following program: Preventative Applications: Application Rate in ounces per Frequency 1000 square feet High pressurefavorable environmental conditions Every 5-7 days 6 ounces Spray to wet using 2-3 gallons of water per 1000 sq. ft. Low pressure environmental conditions Every 7 days 3 ounces Spray to wet using 2 gallons of water per 1000 sq. ft. Symptom Notes ZeroTol works well as a preventative for algae because it kills algae spores, keeping pressure low enough to stop algae from forming. If pressure increases, go to the 6 ounce rate as per the instructions above. For questions regarding use of ZeroTol, call your chemical distributor or BioSafe Systems at 1.888.273.3088. *BioSafe Systems can help you establish a water treatment program to prevent recontamination of greens from pond, lake or canal water. In October of 2000, only 41 golf courses in Connecticut were registered diverters, and another handful had diversion permits.
