Soul Catcher - Day 72
An oil painting on canvas depicting a surreal underwater creature, with one large tentacle that breaks off into smaller, spindly tentacles. The tentacles are a light blue color with a white underside. Encompassing the tentacles is a red mass filled with numerous bubbles in a multitude of blue, purple, white, red, and orange. The bubbles are clustered together organically, leaving space for the deep black of the sea to show through, almost like the bubbles are being gathered by the creature.

This painting, created 72 days after the pandemic's public awareness, depicts a surreal underwater creature as the soul catcher of those lost to Covid-19. The bubbles represent their souls, and at the base of the painting is a circle of people holding hands with one space left open - a space I didn't know would be taken by my father, who passed away due to Covid-19 complications on January 2, 2021. This painting holds a lot of meaning for me and represents my personal experience with the pandemic. It serves as a reminder of the impact of Covid-19 on individuals, families, and communities. --Label design by exhibit curator Nancy DeJoy.
