Watching the world close down around us with fear, conflicting statements, and misinformation running rampant was beyond disheartening. It was my mom who first mentioned that we could make masks for people. She sewed the first prototype, and a family brainstorming session resulted in a new focus on helping and making a difference. We are all veterans; we have all served and are willing to continue that service in whatever way is possible to bring comfort to others. In much less time than we expected, we had run through a year's worth of fabric, which led us to develop the "Extra Yard Program." Anyone who wished for masks from a specific fabric could send us one yard of that fabric. We would return 2 masks made from that fabric to them and use the remainder for masks that we could donate elsewhere. Over 100 yards of fabric were shipped to our home in Washington and we just kept sewing, ironing, and shipping as fast as we possibly could! --Label design by exhibit curator Nancy DeJoy.
