"Southern Spiced: A Brown Girl's Tale" weaves my stories of growing up in the South in the 1970's through narrative poetry. Creating this piece helped me explore and connect with the many tragedies that occurred during the pandemic and throughout our history, which are largely the root causes of how racism and inequality have begun and are perpetuated. In writing "Southern Spiced," I wanted to ensure that my life experiences as an African American growing up in the South weren't lost, along with the experiences of my family members. The pandemic pushed me to complete this work, which inspired me to persevere through the tragedies and struggles happening around the world and in my life. Creating this work helped me connect with my mind, spirit, and community during this time. --Label design by exhibit curator Nancy DeJoy.
