As a self-employed photographer and single mother, I sat at home and worried about how I could care for my family without work. I had the constant nagging thought of "how in the world could a photographer be helpful in a situation like this?" During lockdown, my friend who is a doctor called me and told me about an idea he had. He wanted to go into the hospital to talk to the workers about their experiences during the pandemic. He wanted to have me capture images while he recorded interviews. Together, we created an audio and video record of our local pandemic response in West Virginia. This got me out of my house, helped me understand how I can keep my family and I safe, and gave me a sense of purpose during lockdown.

Como fotógrafa autónoma y madre soltera, me sentaba en casa y me preocupaba cómo iba a cuidar de mi familia sin trabajar. Tenía este pensamiento constante y fastidioso de "¿cómo diablos podía ser útil una fotógrafa en una situación así?" Durante el confinamiento un amigo mío que es médico me llamó y me habló de una idea que tenía. Quería ir al hospital para hablar con los trabajadores sobre sus experiencias durante la pandemia. Quería que yo captara imágenes mientras él grababa las entrevistas. Juntos creamos un registro en audio y vídeo de la respuesta local a la pandemia en West Virginia. Esto me hizo salir de casa y me ayudó a darme cuenta de cómo podía mantener a mi familia y a mí seguros, y me ofreció un sentido de propósito durante el confinamiento.

Il voulait aller à l'hôpital pour parler au personnel à propos de ses expériences pendant la pandémie. Il voulait que je prenne des photos pendant qu'il enregistrait les entretiens. Nous avons créé ensemble une archive audio et visuelle de la réponse pandémique locale en Virginie-Occidentale. Cela m'a fait sortir de la maison en m'aidant à comprendre comment je peux tenir ma famille en sécurité et en me donnant un sentiment d'être utile pendant le confinement.
