Luxury Plague Mask
A luxury leather plague mask in the process of being made pictured on a work surface. The exterior of the mask is white with a pattern of teal shapes and the eye holes are covered with darkened lenses. The straps are a teal color that matches the shapes and are laid across the surface unattached to the mask. One of the straps is in the process of being stitched with a thread of the same teal color. Various leather working tools–a needle, diamond chisel, and mallet–surround the mask.

Early on in the pandemic, I was following several luxury brands on LinkedIn and reflecting on the difference between what's important in life and what was being presented as relevant by some major companies. I couldn't help but think how silly branding, status, and consumption are when people are getting sick and dying. When making this piece, I also thought about how the very wealthy were experiencing the pandemic differently than the majority of the population. This piece became especially relevant as civil unrest escalated due to its high functionality and satirical message. "Luxury Plague Mask" is a fully functional, completely handmade luxury leather plague mask, fitted with polarized shatterproof lenses and an N95 respirator. --Label design by exhibit curator Nancy DeJoy. Labels written by Ben Lash and his team in consultation with artist statements.
