"Crip Space" is about embodying the lens of disability and reclaiming crip identity. Knowing how many racialised, disabled, poor, elderly, and institutionalized people would be sacrificed during the pandemic to maintain the status quo. Knowing I could very well be one of them. "The Golden Mask" is about PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic. This specifically was made when hospitals ran out of usable equipment and were contemplating what to do when they ran out of them. They tried using ableist, racist, and fatphobic markers, deciding which lives were worthy based on things like BMI and how much assistance patients needed on a daily basis. In the words of the late disability activist, Stacey Milburn, "Nobody is disposable." --Label design by exhibit curator Nancy DeJoy. Labels written by Ben Lash and his team in consultation with artist statements.
