Boundless
A digitally painted self-portrait portraying a Pacific Islander woman sitting criss-cross in front of 9 stacked tube televisions, looking down at her smartphone. She wears a blue sweatshirt, gray sweatpants, and white gym socks. Behind her the television screens display images that illustrate life during the pandemic; masked people holding protest signs, medical workers in hazmat suits wheeling a stretcher, an empty street, two subway seats with one seat crossed off for social distancing, American flags on the national mall lawn, and a vaccine vial with a syringe.

The pandemic is a time of awareness for what it means to be an individual. In this self-portrait, I painted myself in the same clothes most would wear during the pandemic - sweats. Every day, I would watch news videos on my phone. It would start with news of a protest, then it would be something happening in politics, and then an update about the high numbers of people in the ICU. I became more self-aware of what little I have control over. I take breaks from the media to find peace again, but news stories are constantly at the back of my mind making themselves known. We all become vulnerable to the world without a choice. --Label design by exhibit curator Nancy DeJoy. Labels written by Ben Lash and his team in consultation with artist statements.
