May 10th 63         My Dear Childe         I received yours of the 17th of April sum days ago before we broak Camp have [roat?] to once or twise just to let you know that I was well       we left Camp the 28th at noon we halted at night a few miles                                           nded from Fredricks Burgh was surrou^ by Pontoons & artilerey the [men?] said we ware to cross the river near whare we did last fall we Campt for the night but it was a shorte night for at elevon we ware on the March we struck the river about three miles below [F?] we ware in [hoap?] of crossing before day light but the wagons made so much nois that the enemey came to see what                                                 was to [pay?] & gave us rather warm work the [illegible in original] left & we halted for a while then they sent our Reg & the [C?] Wisconsin down to the river we oapened fire but it was dark & fogey so that we could not see & we soon fell back until day light then we ware ordered to cross in the boats the [G?] wint                                                 ugh a head thare was not boats eno^                                                 ey for all to go at once the enem^ met us with a warm recip tion we lost in our [CO?] am kiled & three wounded before we got a crost the river the enemey ware in rifel pits & had all the chanse in the world but we crost in a hu hurey our bois say our Fboy was up the hil first but I am not Shure of that but we did take the first and the moast Prisoners the rest of the Brigade ware soon a crost & we held the same ground that we did last fall that night it rand it was a harde night but the enemey let us rest the best we could the next morning our Reg ware [moved?] farther to the left                                           fense there we began to fi fix for de^ we tore down one large Barn                                               ing and two or three other out buil^ for brest works that night they sheld us sum kiled a few men after dark we went to work to strengthen our [woork?] we used the plows                                       gs we found in the out buildin^                         [illegible in original] and maid shovels out of bou^ & fixt things quite strong but Saturday morning we ware orderd to re cross the river that we did not like for we thought we could [holde?] our ground but we left and went to the extrem right we [halted?] late at night & started be fore day light crost the river again at the [U. or W.?] S. [forde?] Sunday morning and went to the extreme right and formed a line of batel thare was two in front of us the fireing began before we got our position and we expected to have work pretey soon but we ware hapeley disapointed but sutch musketrey [mixt?] with grape & canister is seldom hurde for five hours it was teriabel the next morning we ware [moved?] further to         the right as Picketts
