Camp Harlough Near Sharps Burge M d Oct 12th 1862         Dear Child           I have a litel spare time and I cannot [illegible in original] any more pleasantlyly than try ing to write to you I wrote to Joseph from Fred rick just as we ware to start for hear we came from W to Fredrick by [rube?] from thare hear we martch it is about 22 miles and is the first good Country we have seen it is over sum hils Mountains but the valeys are verey fine with first rate water it hasben verey dry but the Corn is fine we past over a part of the batel field of south Mountain had [illegible in original] for dinner near foot of the Mountain sum of the boys went onto the ground whare the hardest fiteing was but I was to tired to go and no we past over a part of the batel field of Antetum near Sharps burgh the Houses are all [illegible in original] [hear?] five with from one to 20 [illegible in original] it was averey hard fight thair is sum Prisioners [2 words illegible in original] they are most of wounded I felt to pity them when I first saw them but I have give that up for they arecross and saucey as your please thare is one Dr that sayes he is tierd of it and wishes it [wod?] stop but the others that I havge talk with are for fite if they cant [setel?] thare one way they are verey poor by [illegible in original] [illegible in original] [illegible in original] and [illegible in original] the most of them have [illegible in original] grey close sum with [lining?] Coat or pants and a large share of them are [lace?] foot the old so soaldiers say two thurds of them are [lave?] foot at any rates they look harde our Cooks were cald up at twelve last night to prepare two days rations and we did expict to [illegible in original] before this time but we are hear yet and may stay a week for [aught?] I know thare has bin fiering to day of [illegible in original] Harpers Ferry I must close for it is a most time for dress Parade the soldier has no Sunday more than a [illegible in original] please write soon and and direct to 1st armey Corps Gen Gibins Brigade Wasington D.C. give my love to all                                       regarde from your Father with Strong ^ Miss Alice M Peck A G Peck
