[Written upside down on top of Scan 1] please let Mr Leverance know how I am [End] Douglas Hospital Washington May 13 1864 Dear Mother I take this oppor tunity to letter you know that I am still in the land of the living though not entirely sound the day after we joined our Regt (which was [3rd?]) the Army of the Potomac moved we crossed the Rapidan river and had a battle with Lee. in the 2nd days fight I was wounded in the left leg just above the ankle an minnie ball passed through and fractured the bone but I will be well in a short time Corp Garner & Capt Whalen are well I know Garner is for he took care of me he was detailed to take care of the wounded and Whalen was well the last I heard from him the wounded had rather rough times especially those wounded in the fore part of the fight I was put in to an Army wagon and rode around in it for two days and nights and an Army wagon is [illegible in original] than a common farmers lumber wagon it is all a well man can stand and much worse for or wounded a sick ^ man It was six days after I was wounded before I got in to a good hospital I have a good view of the Capitol here I must close for this time [Direct?] to Douglas Hospital Ward No. 2 your son A B Holmes Mm H.
