Douglas Hospital Ward 2 Bed Washington D. C. June 6th 1864 Dear Mother Yours of the 31st arrived last evening it found me in good health and my wound improving. I will with the help of God be able to get out on crutches by the first of July. I am still trying to serve God as a Christian should I have plenty of religious reading but I know that I come short of living as I should I can hear the church bell ringing in the City on Sabbath I know that I have the prayers of Gods people and for that I am thankful There are more wounded coming in every day I would like to see the list of losses in the C Regt because they have been in some engagements lately the Hon F. W. Kellog Member of Congress from Mich. sends me some papers once in a while well I will close for the present good bye your son Augustus Holmes Mrs. A H Homles, direct as above
