61 George Town Heights June 23 D M Bagley Dear friend I write to Let you know that I am Still in the Land of the Living & in the enjoyment of good health you have heard By this time that we arived at Washington Safe & went right into Camp at george Town heights near the chain Bridge caled By some the Litle falls Bridge across the Potomac River we havnt had any Skirmish yet: But are expecting to have a fight every nightl it is rumored around here the enemy is advancing toward this place But i can hardley Beleve it for if the attemp to cross the Bridge we Shall Blow every one of them [illegible in original] to L we have 3 peices of canon placed this Side the Bridge So if the come any were near us the will have to take it: the Boys all feels ancious for a [illegible in original] fight for my part I hope if there is any fighting to Be done I hope the will do it Befor Long . for i am geting [illegible in original] tired of Staying here it goes a Litle tufer here then it did in grand Rappids we have from 16 to 20 in A tent & all Lying on ceder Brush or gras for a Bed it is very hot & sultry considerable warmer then it is Michigan I was down to the city yesterday & went through capital then Seate Senate chamber is a Beautiful place the City is ful of Soldiers the go all over I Seen A Redge Regt come in Last night from the State of New York Last friday night we calculated we to Be attacked we was all fun furnished with 30 rounds of cartridges & Loaded guns So we had to sleep with one eye open ready to march at the tap of the drum we have A hundred men on guard every night the Boys most of them are well there is about 30 of them in them in the hospital the drum is Beating & i shall have to close if I hope when i write you again i shall Be able to give you Some news I Suppose you know more what is going on here then we do I would Be very much obliged if you would send me the Lansing Republican while we stay in this place we have A good chance to get our mail & plenty of time to read give my Respects to your Wife & all Lansing people tell them we are waiting with the greatest of paitence for A fight I tell you we have Some tuf Russ Ruses in this Regt the will do the will their duty every one of them tell my folks i am well i have got to go on drill so good Bye from your friend & well wisher John Broad To D M Bagley Washinton DC Lansing Mich write John Broad Co.
