Brownell describes the fighting against Confederate soldiers taking place in Petersburg, VA. He believes the Union casualties are much lower than Confederates, in part because Confederate soldiers are weak from hunger. Brownwell is a part of the Michigan Infantry, 20th regiment. He fought alongside the Michigan 2nd at Petersburg, then commented on meeting up with the 5th Michigan Cavalry.
