James Dickerman writes to his brother Edward mainly about his experiences in Lowell and Boston, Massachusetts, after he was mustered out of the military. It seems likely that James was a member of the 1st Michigan Volunteer Infantry because it only required a three month enlistment term, which ended on August 7, 1861. (Later, James mustered into the 8th Michigan Volunteer Infantry). James wonders if Edward was involved in the "[d]isgraceful flight" at the First Battle of Bull Run. In addition, he includes a poem entitled "Thinking of Thee."
