Samuel writes to one of his brothers about the health of their mother and sister, Diantha. He also notes that their mother is afraid of him rejoining the army, so he will try to secure a "first rate Bearth" when he reenlists. Samuel goes on to critique Northerners, saying they treat African Americans worse than Southern slaveholders.
