Diantha tells Edward that several people in the household are quite ill, and she jokes that she wishes he would get sick so that he can return home on furlough. Diantha laments the prevalence of disease among soldiers then changes topic, discussing the condition of the family crops. She goes on to briefly describe a Fourth of July celebration and a dinner party that she recently attended. Diantha closes by noting that the number of pupils in her classroom have shrunk because they are helping their parents pick berries.
