I shall have unopertunity to see him write as often as you can Knoxville Oct 16th /63, Dear Wife & Brother I shall have to write to both of you at once as I do not know how soon I may have to pack up & put out again we have just got back to Knoxville after an absence of fifteen days in pursuit of Rebels we found them & had quite A combat with them but we were only partially engaged with them we had one man killed & two or three wounded in our regt I escaped without A scratch in fact there was no one hurt in our Co we Pursued them about fifty miles & then we were recalled but our Cavalry continued the Pursuit nearly to the Virginia line them there was not A very large Force of ^ [Written on left side of Scan 1] write & let me know what regt James Fulton belongs to if he is in Tenn it is Raining to day & cold & dreary enough it makes me think that winter is coming fast if this weather continues long we shall have to give up Campaigning for this season. I have [illegible] sent fifty Dollars in A letter that I sent to Mother if you want to use anny of it for cloths for your self or the Children use it that is if you can not get along untill about the midle or last of November when I shall be able to send you some more no Providence interfereing to the contrary you must cloth yourself & Children up well for the winter & protect your selves good from the Bad weather as health is of the first importance. you wrote that Mary Jane got had ^ A little Girl I congratulate them, long may it live & be A source of hapiness to its Parents. How do our little ones get along are they healthy & good write & let me know I have not space to write much more to you this time take good care of the Children & yourself you must be very careful of Dorr, if he goes to school that he does not learn bad habits faster than he does anny thing else you must get along as well as you can this winter & I am in hopes that I shall be at home to assist you myself after this winter if I am spared to do so. no more at present except much love from your Husband James Dickerman Knoxville Oct 16th /63, Dear Brother I write you A few lines about that Land I have sent fifty dollars to Mother that I would like have ld invested in Land unless Eliza shou^ want some of it for something take what she does not want & Borrow some more to go with it if you can & by the Land Borow the money untill the Middle or last of February & I will have the Money in readiness to Pay up Principle & interest. You spoke of another Piece of Land lying by the side of it that could be brought Cheap I will tell you what I think would be the best thing that you could do go to work by the month or by the Job & be saving of your money as you can be & I think that by April or May that I can let you have some Money to help you I intend to get one Piece of Land & Pay for it I shall have to expend considerble to get up A House & all of the fixings after that I will help you all that I can you must remember that I have got A little Family that I must first attend to their wants & then I want you should help me & in turn I will help you but in the mean time you must be doing all that you can & save your Money.
