Camp at Fort fisher October the 20 – – 1864 – Dear Wife i take this as my opertunity To write theas few lines to you to let you no how i am my health is good And i hope that theas few lines will Find you and almon Well and i hope That we will soon git the news that this Cruil war is over it Wood Be a happey news We are incamped hear our Pickets and the Rebs Pickets aint onley a Bout fifteen Rods a Part the ReBs and our men are so Clost to Gether that they Can taulk to Each other Their is a good meney of the sixty first new york Boys has desirted and Went over to the ReBs And their is a good meney of the ReBs Comes in our lines their Was three men hung Last friday a weak a go and their was three That Was hung yesterday they was all desirters And their was is three more to Be hung Next friday it Was Reported that their Was Eight hundred ReBs Came in our Lines night Before last theas ReBels tells u that they dont git Hardley Enything thing to Eat they onley git one half a Pound of Raw Beef onCe in four day and not much of Eny thing ElCe to Eat With their Beef The ReBels desirters says that they are Hard up and they say that they Dont Waunt to fight Eny more They are Coming over in our lines most Every night and most Every day our Ridgment is hear at fort fisher A doin [gardon?] duty it is a good Plase i hope that they Will let us stay hear untill our time is out yester day Was sunday an alls it Was Chrismas We did not have Eny thing more then [Caman?] to Eat i sapose that you Had somthing good to Eat more then [Comon?] i hope you did Enjoy your self A Chrismas . and i hope that you Allso Will Enjoy your selves a new years i dont no hardley What i shall Hav good a new year But i Gess that i Will hav a few hardtack And a little meat and maBy a few Beans and maBy We Will make a little Bean soup We Will try and hav somthing if it haint so niCe and i shall try To engoy my self With What Ever We git to Eat my hand is so lame i Cant do eny duty a tall i Will now close my letter for this time By asking you and almon to Write soon and not fail and i Will do the same so good By to all of you and all of my [Enduring?] friends All so This from B Brock to Wife and sun Good By to All DereCt your letters as you have Before B Brock Twenty six michigan Rigdment Company H Washington.
