Benjamin provides a very detailed account of his daily diet, sleep patterns, and the weather. He also discusses his health issues and the medications he takes. There are occasional descriptions of his duties and movements as a solider, but this is mainly an account of his personal well-being. The diary spans the dates May 2, 1862 to May 27, 1863, the day that he was killed in battle at Port Hudson, Louisiana.
