Port Hendson La Aug 8th 1863 Mrs Bostock, It becomes my panefull duty to inform you of the surcomestances connected with the death of your son Henry he was killed at the head of his company an attempt was mad to storm the enemys works at midnight the party had advanced to within a few rods of the work the men were ordered to fix bayonet preparatory to the assault this moovem, ent was discovered by the enemy who fire on the gallent-little band one shot-taking effects in Henrys neck and comeing out at the left-side below the arm killing him instantly he was buried on the field by his comrads a coffin was furnished and the site is a pleasant one cituated on the bank of the Miss river he fell as every true soldier would wish to fall at the post of Honor and danger gallantly performing his duty and while you mourn the loss of a beloved son we can cympathyse with and you in your afflictions and feel that we have lost a geniel companion and a brave soldier and I assure you that his loss to me is attended with affliction for during my illness he was ever ready and wiling to assist me in the many dutys devolving on the commanders of companys and no one feels his loss more than I do I forward his effects by express today concisting of Cash $71.55 and other articles whitch I thought would bee of intrest to you I have collected all accounts in his favor and payed all demands against him in the Regt I have collected several small accounts in his favor if I find any other accounts I will collect them and forward the amount his fin-al statement is forwarded to the war departeme nt by application to the war departe ment you can get the pay due him also all bountys due him Truly your Obedient-Servt Capt S Cogswell Commanding Co E 6th Mich Vol. PS I also enclose the fatal ball whitch killed Henry alsow a mersham pipe this pipe I would lik to get as a keep sake iff it is agreeable to your wishes
