Camp 10th Mich Near Rossville Georgia Jan 24th, 1864 Dear Brother I received your letter dated Dec 31st and was very glad to hear from you. The regiment was out on the old Chicka- manga battle ground yesterday. I tell you it was an awful sight to see our poor fellows not half buried their feet and arms and heads uncovered We went out to where Davis’ division fought where he lost every other man ether killed or wounded. The trees are completely scored, not a bit of bark left on them and there are trees two feet through cut down by cannon balls The rebel dead are all buried decent some of our men have never been buried at all they have got their catridge boxes their haversacks, and knapsacks on. Our regiment are all going into the veteran corp’s we expect to start for home the seventh of next month we expect to go to Detroit and there get our thirty days furlough. I heard that the 14th had gone home but I do not know whether it is so or not. Col Lum is coming back to the regiment in a few days Our first Lieut has gone home on a furlough. We are drawing full rations now. There is no news of any importance except that deserters from the rebel army every day they average about fifty a day. The regiment is going up on Lookout mountain tomorrow I wish you would write me a longer letter tell me everything that happens I have not time to write any more so good bye and believe me your affectionate Brother William Bostock
