Camp 10th Mich Infty. Near Rossville, Georgia. Jan 30th, 1864 Dear Mother We have just returned from a reconoisance out beyond Ringgold we started on the morning of the 28th and got back here last night we marched about eighteen miles the force consisted of our division and two regiments of cavalry under command of Gen’ Palmer our Corps commander the cavalry came on to the Rebs about two miles the other side of Ringgold and had quite a sharp skirmish with them killing one man and wounding several there was none of our men hurt. Ringgold has been a very nice place all the buildings have been burnt except the dwelling houses. I received a Harpers Weekly and two Marshall papers from you I received a letter from Georgy a short time ago. I do not think that our Reg’t can get started for home in less than ten days We have had very fine weather for the last week with the exceptions of today it has rained pretty hard most all day. We are expecting Col. Lum back to the Regiment every day There is no news in camp Give my love to Father and believe me your affectionate son. W Bostock
