Co. K 10th Mich V.VI In front of Savannah. Ga. December 16th 1864 Dear Mother Having an oportunity to send mail I thought I would drop you a few lines to let you know that I am well. We are on picket to day and I have not much time before the mail goes out Tom Holton was killed on the 29th Of November near Louisville. Ga. He was out foraging and was captured and shot through the head with a revolver. we recovered his body and buried it as well as we could. The Rebels killed all our men that they captured we lost about twenty out of our Regiment. It would be to tedius a job to give you the details of the march besides I have not got time. We have been here five days the 17th Corps has gone to open communications with the coast and I guess they have done it as the Suply train went out yesterday we are only eighteen miles from the coast. I have my money all right to send to you as soon as it is safe. Sergeant Bryan is going to write to Tom's wife if you see her you can tell her of his death. It is excedingly warm down here we have not seen a bit of snow yet and what sounds strange to me is to hear the frogs singing in the night just the same as in the summer. Well Mother I shall have to close this as the mail goes out in a few minuits Give my love to Father and be1eive me your affectionate son William Bostock
