Co. K, 10th Mich. V.V.Infty In front of Savannah, Ga December 17th, 1864 Dear Mother I received three letters from you to day also two papers I was very glad to hear from you not having had a letter from you since we were at Chattanooga. There was several letters came for Tom Holton also a package of shirts a pair of socks and a pair of gloves. Sergeant Bryan and my self are going to take the things and pay his wife for them. We got the first reliable news of Lincoln's election to day and it was not much news ether as we were all sure that he would be elected. I wrote you a few lines yesterday while we were on picket with a lead pencil I do not know whether you can make it out or not for I was in a good deal of a hurry to get it in in time. We have 1ayed here six days and we have drawed four hard tacks for the six days just one days rations for six but we have drawed a plenty of beef so we have got along very well we are going to draw again tomorrow night when we will draw full rations. We have marched over three hundred miles without getting any rations except coffee all we got was what we forraged some days we had a plenty and had to leave some in camp while other days we would not get hardly any thing. The Rebels have been throwing shells over here pretty lively to day There is a large swamp in the front of our Brigade so that we cannot get at each other to shoot with muskets. I do not think the Rebels have a very large force here not over fifteen thousand. Gen. Sherman said he can take the city in three hours but he might lose half of his Army in doing it he is afraid of torpedoes he has had Rebel prisoners digging them up in the road nearly all the way. a part of our forces are accross the Savannah river into Carolina we have captured several transports on the river since we have been here loaded with rations. You spoke ofsending me some things I do not think you had better as I am not in need of any thing at present I have a plenty of paper and envelopes. Sergeant Bryan got a half realm of paper to day and I can get all I want of him. I forgot to tell you that he is my new bunk mate. Tom Holton makes three out of four of us that messed together in Nashville that has been killed Tuttle & Thornton were the other two I expect it will be my turn next but I should think that there ought to be one spared out of the four. I did not get any letter from Georgy to day. Well I shall have to close this give my love to Father and beleive me your affectionate son William Bostock In closed is a sheet of Rebel paper that I send to you for inspection we captured a lot of them in Sandersville Ga.
