[1865] Hd Qrs Co. B. 1st Mich EM Goldsboro U.C. March 28th 1863 Dear Brother Your kind and welcome letter bearing date Feb. 8" 1863 was received yesterday and very happy was I to hear from you and to hear that you and Delia were both well. I have nothing of importance to write to you as long before this will reach you the [magnetic wires?] will flash over our land. the full perticulars of our march and safe arrival at a new base. We have left a strip of Ashes 50 miles in width through the States of North and South Carolina. we have cut all of the Railroads connecting Richmond with the West so that they will stay cut for some time to come we have destroyed the Arsenal and Armory at Columbia also at [illegible] and [illegible] we have captured 100 pieces of artillery small arms without number Horses Mules Cattle and "Niggers" without end we have forayed nearly all of our living from the country through which we have passed. we have beat -en the [illegible] forces of the enemy in their [chosen?] positions and captured probably 8000 prisoners in the different ingagements on the march among them Col Rhett of Congress not -riety. he was captured with three of his staff inside his own Pickets by three of Kilpatricks scouts. at the time of the Bombardment of Fort Sumpter he was Captain of heavy artilery at Charleston and was one of the first to fire on the Stars and Stripes over that luckless Fortress. The weather has some of the time been very wet and the roads horrible. there was the place the [1st?] [illegible] E and M came handily many is the mile of cor duroy we have made. many the night we have worked in the water building Bridges so that the army might not be delayed in the morning many is the mile of Railroad Iron we have twisted so that the bars looked like huge Augurs. We have also been on the skirmish line and in the line of Battle but luckily none were Killed from the 1st [illegible] E. & M. We arrived at this place on the 24 Inst after being on the march two Months and one day. the loss of our army from killed wounded died pris -oners and all will not exceed. 5000. Allen has been promoted to Lieut and is assigned to Co. [K.?] I saw Eugene Husted a few days since he was well and hearty Write soon. Give my Respects to all Ever Yours Alex.
