Dr. Sir _ I have not been able to see van Alstyne until today. though I wrote him on the receipt of your letter sending me the Satisfaction price, that you wanted to know when he could and would pay the mortgage_ He has just brought me $1000_ this is all he can pay until the first of April next_ I see by your letter of 2nd. Oct. last. that your payment does not become due until the 15th. of April_ I think there will be no doubt but that van Alstyne will pay it in time to send you before the 15th_ and I would suggest that I send you immediately $300. so that you can use it to make purchases of Stock [illegible] if you wish to_ This will have the $1300 to make your payment of the 15th_ van Alstyne will not disappoint you. I think he said if he could do no better he would borrow the balance at one of our Banks_ Please write me imme- diately on receipt of this what I shall do with the money, whether send it all to you (the $1000) or the $300. as I have sugges- ted_ If your payment is to be made to a person in this State, I presume a certificate of deposit will answer the purpose & that will not cost any thing_ The weather here has been very mild for several weeks and the ice is fast disappearing in our river_ The Creeks are all open and the water has been quite high_ We have had a few days of very cold weather & I fear the fruit buds of the Peach were Killed_ I think I shall suc- ceed in getting your note from Snyder, by the 1st. of April_ He has given me his word of hon- or that it shall be paid_ He is the Slowest mortal in paying his debts I ever dealt with_ I have not had a chance to see Peterson since I last wrote you and in fact have seen him but once through the winter_ The first time I get a Chance to talk with him I will see if he wont pay the note he gave for property purchased at the [illegible] & arrange the matter he Claims of you when he settles the other demand_ Yours truly R.B.
