Allen writes to his father, John, about his travels in the 1st Michigan Engineers and Mechanics regiment. He mentions that he has worked on railroads and a bridge that Confederate forces burned down. Lastly, he notes that the summer has been very dry so he fears that the problems of war could be compounded by famine in the near future.
