[Penciled in on top of Scan 1] August 17, 1862 [End] 17th /62 Stevenson. Alabama. August Dear Brother I now take my pen in hand. to answer your letter of the 7th of July. which came early to hand. I am well & have been so Since I came to the company. I have wrote one letter to Father. Since I wrote to you but have received no answer as yet & I have wrote a number to Groveland. but have recieved none. Alexander came to the Company a few days ago. he was well when he came. but has been rather unwell for a couple of days but will be all right in a day or two. in your letter you Said that you was afraid that the wheat crop would be Shorter & that you was afraid that you would have to give up the place. I have a few words to say on that Subject: we have recieved no pay yet. but I have had $13. Doll. per month offered to me. the reason that I did not take it was because I had no way to Send it home then. we expect to be offered our at $13. doll. per month. again in a few days if we do we will take it. & then we can express it to Holley. from here by Adams express Company. the cars run reglar from here to Nashville. do not give up the place if you can help it. I have over 7. months pay coming to me. & Alexander has over 10. monthes to him. So if we are offered. our pay. we can send you about $200. dollars. we will help you all we can. the weather is very warm here now. & the cotton & corn crop is about a failure. we have been encamped here about two weeks. we are building [back?] for a pontoon Bridge. the whole Regt is together now. we are about through here I do not know how long we will stay here or where we will go when we leave I have no more to write at present write as Soon as you can Direct your letters to Company. I have nothing of importance to write to you I left Lousiville on the first day of August and Stayed a week at Nashville and reached the Regiment at this place on the twelfth I have not been very well since I have been here but a few days rest will I trust Set me all right again. the Boys have very good times now and get along very well. our Captain started Home [recruiting?] a few days since and if you come across a man called J W Sligh be sure [thats] him write as soon as you can give my respects to all Ever Yours Alex Campbell
